The contact owns a 2023 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle frequently veered to the left independently, after which the contact became aware that the electronic power steering was not functioning properly. The power steering warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the steering rack and pinion. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 12,000.

While driving noticed the steering began sticking and was not fluid. Force was needed to control and turn the car. In addition, started getting alerts for lane keep assist malfunctioning while it was turned off and not in use. Called the dealership and they indicated it would over a week before they had an appointment available. I have 2 cars so stopped driving the Honda. Last week I decided to drive and the steering had become worse with almost a full loss of control at times. Also noted the steering column had started shaking when driving the car in reverse. The car was dropped off Sunday 10Mar24 at my local Honda dealership and they have informed me the steering rack needs to be replaced and that I could come pick the car up until the part comes in. I informed the dealership I would not be picking the car up until the repair was made, as it is unsafe to drive.

The steering wheel seems to be sticking causing jerking feeling. When I adjust the wheel going down highway to stay in lane it feels like the steering wheel is jumping over a spoke. It is not right and feels unsafe. There was no accident. Started shortly after purchase in June 2023.

2/24/2024 I was in a library parking lot, going parking lot speed where children might be encountered. I turned right into a perpendicular parking space, no cars on either side. I went to brake as I approached the parking lot bumper and the car unexpectedly accelerated and would not stop. I crashed into a tree and metal pole, which stopped the car. I don't believe the car would have stopped without the tree and pole. I put the car in reverse and with difficulty backed back into the parking space. The right fender is severly damaged, right tire flat and I was unable to move the tires back to a straight position. The car cannot be driven. Yesterday, 2/23, I was at the dealers for oil change and tire rotation and was told there was a recall on the vehicle which required a softwear update. Reading my maintenance report it seems that this was an emissions recall, service bulletin 23-038 and the PGM-FI software was updated. This is a leased car which I got 3/31/23. No other cars or people or property were damaged or harmed. If this had happened near people and cars I fear that someone could have been killed or severe property damage would have occurred.

The steering on my 2023 Honda CR-V keeps sticking or freezing in place and you have to correcting the steering wheel all the time to get it unstuck, you are constantly correcting the steering wheel to keep the vehicle on the road. it is very unsafe to drive.

When driving on the highway during moderately long trips have experienced the steering sticking and have to overcompensate to turn the wheel. As a result I am constantly fighting with the wheel to keep straight on the highway. We initially thought this was possibly the lane assist but we shut off the lane assist and the sticky steering still continued. Driving the car long distances is exhausting as you are constantly fighting against the sticky steering to keep within your lane of traffic. Both my husband and i drove on the highway and experienced the same situation.....Brought to dealership today [XXX] to be fixed as I saw info online that this is a known concern but because they couldn't replicate it, they won't fix the issue....it sometimes takes a while driving on highway for this situation to show....and if the dealer doesn't allow the time for a long drive they won't be able to replicate it. Bought the crv new summer 2023...first noticed the pull heading north on [XXX] to nh in aug...experienced on trip to west mass on mass pike in sept....experienced again on trip to vt in nov....then again on trip to CT in March. These were long trips where issue VERY noticeable because exhausted at the end managing the steering. Thought steering was just stiff (new to hondas) so didn't reach out to dealer before now..trip to CT was hard so looked online to see if there were issues and saw latest complaints....so made appt with dealer.... My 23 Crv is having problems with the steering, it has only 6 thousand miles on it. There is a creaking sound in the steering when turning left, it took me several times to deal with the dealership before they handled it, now, i am experiencing stiff steering when driving. When driving and the steering is on the center and if i try to move it right or left, there is a spot that feels rough or stiff.

The steering becomes sticky when driving. It can't be adjusted smoothly, but can only be done using extra effort. The steering wheel turns a larger degree than expected. Instead of turning at arbitrary angle, it skips from one to another but not any between. It causes overcorrection and makes it very difficult to drive straight.
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2023-2025 Acura Integra, Civic Type R, CR-V Hybrid, CR-V, HR-V, 2022-2025 Civic, Civic Hatchback, 2024-2025 Acura Integra Type S, 2025 CR-V Fuel Cell EV, Civic Hybrid, and Civic Hatchback Hybrid vehicles. The steering gearbox assembly may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can cause excessive internal friction and lead to difficulty steering the vehicle.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Difficulty steering can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the worm gear spring and redistribute or add grease as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 18, 2024. Owners may contact Honda Customer Service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are SJS, MJU, QJT and VJV.

The fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Fuel pump failure can cause an engine stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the fuel pump module, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed September 6, 2024. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are KGC and KGD. This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall numbers 21V-215 and 20V-314.
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2023 CR-V vehicles. The front passenger seat back frame may not have been welded properly, which can cause the seat back position to fail in the event of a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 207, "Seating Systems" and 201, "Occupant Protection in Interior Impact."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A seat back position that fails may not adequately restrain the occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the front passenger seat back frame assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 27, 2023. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is 6PK.

EA23003 · Momentary Increased Steering Effort

On November 29, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Engineering Analysis (EA23003) to assess allegations of momentary increase in steering effort in model years (MY) 2022-2023 Honda Civic, 2023MY Honda CR-V, and 2023MY Acura Integra vehicles (subject vehicles). The complaints received by ODI alleged that the subject vehicles experienced a momentary increase in required steering effort (described as “sticky steering”) occurring mostly at highway speeds after driving for an extended amount of time; these complaints could not be duplicated during dealer service technicians’ quick test drives. The complaints had been received over the previous two years with most occurring with low vehicle mileage. The steering gear of these vehicles is aided by an electrical power assist unit. This power assist unit inputs force on the steering rack via a worm gear and worm wheel assembly. During PE23005, Honda stated this condition of momentary increase in steering effort occurs due to two factors within this power assist unit. First, during manufacturing, the steering worm wheel goes through annealing and component conditioning processes. These processes cause internal stress and strain within the steering worm wheel. This strain is slowly released over the first few months of the vehicle life. Over time, the released strain causes deformation of the teeth on the worm wheel, causing the worm gear to catch on the worm wheel. This catching results in the driver’s momentary increased steering effort. Second, the manufacturing process did not guarantee consistent grease application and, therefore, some subject vehicles received insufficient grease which contributed to the momentary increase in steering effort. During EA23003, ODI further analyzed the potential safety related consequences of the momentary increase in steering effort. NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Test Center (VRTC) duplicated the allegations of increased steering effort. In addition, VRTC discovered the steering worm wheel and worm gear tended to push grease out of the meshing area, resulting in large amounts of grease resting on top of the worm wheel. Information Request responses collected and reviewed by ODI showed Honda had also discovered this additional root cause during NHTSA’s EA. In addition, Honda discovered the preload of the worm wheel gear spring was set too high, increasing the gear slide load and resulting in higher friction and increased torque fluctuation when steering. The number of consumer complaints made to ODI continued to increase with the expansion of scope from the PE to the EA. Additionally, during EA23003, ODI received ten complaints alleging a crash, in addition to the 13 complaints ODI had received as of the time it opened EA23003. In total, 23 crashes have been reported to ODI due to this alleged defect. On October 3, 2024, Honda filed NHTSA Recall No. 24V-744 to address this defect. The recall will provide consumers with a new steering worm wheel gear spring with a decreased load. Additionally, dealerships will add additional grease and relocate any grease sitting on top of the worm wheel back into the meshing area. The scope of this recall includes all Honda vehicles that were manufactured with this specific improperly produced steering worm wheel and spring. In view of the recall action being taken by Honda, ODI is closing EA23003. NHTSA reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.
