On a drive back and forth to Florida from New Jersey the steering seemed to “stick” every so often during highway driving. Almost like the power steering was turned off. With a little additional effort I was able to continue steering but definitely something wasn’t right. I’m very familiar with lane departure and Lane assist features on this vehicle and both of those were not turned on when this was occurring.

Steering wheel sticking when attempting to maintain driving in a straight line, or when attempting to change lanes. It seems as though the steering wheel is fighting me. Vehicle was purchased new during August 2023 with four (4) miles on the odometer. At that time there were no noticeable steering issues. Beginning December 2023, with approximately 1550 miles on the odometer is when I first began experiencing the issue. There were no warning lights and/or messages prior to first experiencing the issue. The issue seems to be getting worse as vehicle mileage increases. As of this date 12/26/2023, I have not had an accident. However when the steering wheel sticks I have to jerk the steering wheel to maintain a straight line causing the vehicle to over compensate. On occasions it has set off the Lane Keeping Assist function. Also it sticks when attempting to change lanes. I have not yet reported this issue to my local Honda dealership due to the holidays, but do intend to do so this week. Please note that I have found numerous complaints regarding the issue when doing an Internet search. Supposedly Honda issue a technical service bulletin regarding this issue in July 2023. My Crv has difficulty in steering. I can go straight down the road and try to change lanes. It can take a strong tug to get it to change lanes. Once it loosens back up it is ok to steer. I took it to the Honda dealer and they said it was normal. I think they are avoiding a dangerous problem. If I turn on the lane keep assist it is even harder to steer. I have reported this before. Nothing gets logged I will try a different dealer after the holidays. Why should I have to lemon law a car for a common problem.

The steering wheel sticks and requires extra effort to break it loose to make small adjustments. This seems to happen and get more severe after a minute or two of driving, and especially when speeds approach 35 mph and higher. Very difficult to make small adjustments smoothly when cruising on an interstate or a straighaway. You have to break it loose for small steering moves, and you can even feel the vibration of it breaking loose in the steering wheel itself. Often you can even hear the sound of it breaking loose in the steering column itself. Went to the Honda dealer, and they cant get me in until Feb 1 2024 to even look at it. I notice there is a TSB MC-10239109-0001 concerning steering boxs on Honda's. This started sticking at about 2000 miles on the vehicle, and is getting more consistent. I now have 2800 miles on the vehicle. The dealership seemed to be unaware of the problem but it is all over the internet, and I find it hard to believe they do not know about it as it has been reported on 2022 and 2023 civics and now is apparently affecting the 2024 models.
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2023-2025 Acura Integra, Civic Type R, CR-V Hybrid, CR-V, HR-V, 2022-2025 Civic, Civic Hatchback, 2024-2025 Acura Integra Type S, 2025 CR-V Fuel Cell EV, Civic Hybrid, and Civic Hatchback Hybrid vehicles. The steering gearbox assembly may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can cause excessive internal friction and lead to difficulty steering the vehicle.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Difficulty steering can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the worm gear spring and redistribute or add grease as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 18, 2024. Owners may contact Honda Customer Service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are SJS, MJU, QJT and VJV.
Honda (America Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2024 CR-V vehicles. The tire identification number (TIN) is missing the four-digit date code. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 139, "New Pneumatic Radial Tires for Light Vehicles."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: An owner whose TIN information is missing may not recognize that their vehicle is involved in a safety recall and continue to drive on recalled tires, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the tires as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 27, 2024. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is BIS.

EA23003 · Momentary Increased Steering Effort

On November 29, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Engineering Analysis (EA23003) to assess allegations of momentary increase in steering effort in model years (MY) 2022-2023 Honda Civic, 2023MY Honda CR-V, and 2023MY Acura Integra vehicles (subject vehicles). The complaints received by ODI alleged that the subject vehicles experienced a momentary increase in required steering effort (described as “sticky steering”) occurring mostly at highway speeds after driving for an extended amount of time; these complaints could not be duplicated during dealer service technicians’ quick test drives. The complaints had been received over the previous two years with most occurring with low vehicle mileage. The steering gear of these vehicles is aided by an electrical power assist unit. This power assist unit inputs force on the steering rack via a worm gear and worm wheel assembly. During PE23005, Honda stated this condition of momentary increase in steering effort occurs due to two factors within this power assist unit. First, during manufacturing, the steering worm wheel goes through annealing and component conditioning processes. These processes cause internal stress and strain within the steering worm wheel. This strain is slowly released over the first few months of the vehicle life. Over time, the released strain causes deformation of the teeth on the worm wheel, causing the worm gear to catch on the worm wheel. This catching results in the driver’s momentary increased steering effort. Second, the manufacturing process did not guarantee consistent grease application and, therefore, some subject vehicles received insufficient grease which contributed to the momentary increase in steering effort. During EA23003, ODI further analyzed the potential safety related consequences of the momentary increase in steering effort. NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Test Center (VRTC) duplicated the allegations of increased steering effort. In addition, VRTC discovered the steering worm wheel and worm gear tended to push grease out of the meshing area, resulting in large amounts of grease resting on top of the worm wheel. Information Request responses collected and reviewed by ODI showed Honda had also discovered this additional root cause during NHTSA’s EA. In addition, Honda discovered the preload of the worm wheel gear spring was set too high, increasing the gear slide load and resulting in higher friction and increased torque fluctuation when steering. The number of consumer complaints made to ODI continued to increase with the expansion of scope from the PE to the EA. Additionally, during EA23003, ODI received ten complaints alleging a crash, in addition to the 13 complaints ODI had received as of the time it opened EA23003. In total, 23 crashes have been reported to ODI due to this alleged defect. On October 3, 2024, Honda filed NHTSA Recall No. 24V-744 to address this defect. The recall will provide consumers with a new steering worm wheel gear spring with a decreased load. Additionally, dealerships will add additional grease and relocate any grease sitting on top of the worm wheel back into the meshing area. The scope of this recall includes all Honda vehicles that were manufactured with this specific improperly produced steering worm wheel and spring. In view of the recall action being taken by Honda, ODI is closing EA23003. NHTSA reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.
