NOW THE TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING -- O/D LIGHT BLINKS, SES LIGHT ACTIVATES, AND VEHICLES OVER-REVS, SLIPS, AND WILL NOT OPERATE IN OVERDRIVE. THE TRANSMISSION DESIGN IS COMPLETELY SEALED, SO I CANNOT EVEN CHECK FOR FLUID LEVELS, NOR DO ANY PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE WHATSOEVER. THERE IS NO WARNING, JUST FAILURE. ISSUES WITH THIS MODEL YEAR ARE SO PREVALENT THAT LOCAL MECHANICS NEED ONLY ASK THE MODEL AND YEAR AND CAN ITEMIZE THE PROBLEMS I HAVE EXPERIENCED, AND PUBLIC FORUMS ARE FULL OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. FORD NEEDS TO RECALL THIS MODEL YEAR. *TR

I HAVE BEEN DRIVING A 2004 FORD EXPLORER SINCE DECEMBER 2004 WHEN MY DAUGHTER LEFT IT FOR ME WHEN SHE MOVED. IT HAD APPROXIMATELY 11,000 MILES. SHE HAD NOTICED A HARD SHIFT, ESPECIALLY WHEN GOING INTO REVERSE AND A ROUGH IDLE AND VIBRATION, BUT HAD NOT HAD A CHANCE TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT. EXCEPT FOR WHEN I HAVE BEEN OUT OF TOWN, I HAVE SERVICED THAT CAR AT A FORD DEALERSHIP RELIGIOUSLY. I COMPLAINED ABOUT THESE PROBLEMS BUT NOTHING WAS EVER FOUND. I WAS NOT EVEN TOLD ABOUT SOME OF THE THINGS I HAVE READ ABOUT ON YOUR WEBSITE WHICH SEEM TO INDICATE THAT FORD WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEMS AND CAUSES. FINALLY, AT JUST UNDER 36,000 MILES, THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. NOW, 47,000 MILES LATER, THIS NEW TRANSMISSION IS LEAKING AND THEY HAVE TO TAKE IT OUT TO SEE WHERE IT'S LEAKING FROM. I READ HERE ABOUT THAT PROBLEM, TOO. TO ME, IT IS CLEAR THAT FORD IS USING MICKEY MOUSE TRANSMISSIONS WHICH, OF COURSE, POSE A SAFETY HAZARD DEPENDING ON WHEN, WHERE, AND HOW THE FAILURE MANIFESTS ITSELF, AND IS ALSO AN AFFRONT TO THE CONSUMER WHO IS BEING DEFRAUDED BY BEING SOLD A FAR MORE INFERIOR VEHICLE THAN THE ONE FOR WHICH THEY BARGAINED. SO, HOW'S YOUR INVESTIGATION GOING? *TR

THE TRANSMISSION STARTED SLIPPING AND WOULD NOT ENGAGE RIGHT AWAY. ENGINE WOULD REV BUT VEHICLE WOULDN'T GO. THE VEHICLE THEN STARTED SMOKING FROM UNDERNEATH. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAD A MASSIVE FLUID LEAK INSIDE THE CONVERTER HOUSING AND FLUID WAS DRIPPING ON THE HOT EXHAUST. THE LEAK WAS CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE PUMP SEAL IN THE TRANSMISSION, WITH ONLY 39,200 MILES. THE REPAIR COST $1100.00. LAST YEAR I SPENT $800.00 TO REPLACE THE FAILED SOLENOIDS IN THE TRANSMISSION BODY THAT WERE POSTED IN A FORD TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN. HOWEVER, FORD DID NOT WISH TO COVER THE COST SINCE I WAS OUTSIDE OF THE WARRANTY BY ONE YEAR ALTHOUGH I ONLY HAD 35,900 MILES AT THE TIME. *TR

WAS TOLD BY THE MAN AT THE SHOP THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THIS VEHICLE. HE ACTUALLY WAS ASKING ME IF IT DID THIS OR THAT....YES. HIS PRICE FOR REPAIR WAS THOUSANDS LESS THAN FORD'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND I AM NOT BEING ASKED TO PRE-PAY HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS. I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET AND IT APPEARS THAT THIS TRANSMISSION ISSUE IS HIGHLY COMMON ON THE 02 EXPLORER. I HAD JUST LEFT THE FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT WHERE I HAD GONE FOR REGULAR OIL CHANGE AND MULTI-POINT INSPECTION. THEY TOLD MY THAT THEY VEHICLE WAS IN GREAT SHAPE. REVERSE WAS COMPLETELY NOT WORKING. I HAD REPORTED THAT I SUSPECTED TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS A YEAR PRIOR, AND DEALERSHIP STATED THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG. IN OCTOBER 2009 AT 59,492 MILES I BROUGHT IT IN TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP AND STATED THAT WHILE GOING INTO REVERSE AND OUT OF REVERSE THE CAR MADE A CLUNKING SOUND. SOLENOID BODY WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. APPROXIMATELY 3,000 MILES LATER TRANSMISSION WAS FOUND TO HAVE A BROKEN DRUM AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED - WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. *TR

This investigation is being closed based on several considerations.By the most inclusive counting of all alleged rollaway incidents (i.e., counting all alleged rollaway incidents and assuming a singular failure mechanism), the incident rate is low, however during EA09-013, ODI identified a number of different failure mechanisms in 180 incidents related to the alleged defect. The highest rate for any particular failure mechanism, the failure of the Automatic Transmission Parking System, was 4.4/100K.The next-highest failure rate was for the BSI System, at 3.4/100K.For all identified failure mechanisms there has been a drastically declining trend including very few incidents occurring in recent years.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. For additional information regarding this investigation, see the complete closing resume in the document file for EA09-013.
