I HAVE A 2007 FOR EXPLORER. WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE THE VEHICLE WENT FROM 65 MPH TO 20 MPH. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE FORD DEALER WHO ADVISED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT. THAT THIS IS A KNOW ISSUE WITH THE EXPLORER FROM 2002 TO 2008. I CONTACTED SIX OTHER INDEPENDENT TRANSMISSION SHOPS WHO ALSO ADVISED THAT THIS IS A KNOW ISSUE FOR FORD EXPLORERS YEAR 2002 TO 2008. I THEN CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP CENTER 800-392-3673 WHO ADVISED THAT EVEN THOUGH ITS A KNOW ISSUE WITH FORD THAT ONLY DEALER REPAIR REPORTS COUNT TOWARDS A RECALL WITH NHTSA NOT INDEPENDENT TRANSMISSION COMPANY'S REPAIR OF THE PROBLEM. I EXPLAINED TO THEM THAT I HAD A TWO YEAR OLD IN THE VEHICLE WITH ME NOT ONLY MY LIFE WAS IN DANGER BUT A CHILD ALSO. THE RESPONSE FROM FORDS CUSTOMER SERVICE GROUP WAS REGARDLESS NO ONE GOT HURT. *TR

I TOOK IT IN THREE TIMES CONCERNING THIS ISSUE AND WAS TOLD EACH TIME THAT IT WAS NORMAL AND WAS A HESITATION IN THE GAS RELAYING THE INFORMATION TO THE "COMPUTER". THE WARRANTY HAS RUN OUT AND I ONCE AGAIN TOOK IT BACK FOR THESE SAME ISSUES ONLY THIS TIME THEY DID FIND SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT AND I AM STUCK FOOTING THE BILL ON SOMETHING THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIXED UNDER WARRANTY. I'VE ALSO READ SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ON THIS ISSUE ON THIS SITE AND ON FORDS WEBSITE AND AM WONDERING... WHY HASN'T ANYTHING BEEN DONE? FORD KNOWS ABOUT THIS, AND IT IS APPARENT THE OFFICE OF DEFECTS INVESTIGATION KNOWS ABOUT THIS, BUT IT IS STILL AN ISSUE!!! IF FORD ISN'T GOING TO BE A RESPECTABLE COMPANY AND FIX THIS PROBLEM ON THEIR OWN, THEN WHY HASN'T AN INVESTIGATION STARTED TO FORCE THEM TO FIX THIS PROBLEM? THIS NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED, IT OBVIOUSLY ISN'T A FLUKE PROBLEM AND IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE!!! *TR

EVERYTIME I LEAVE A STOP SIGN OR TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE RPM'S BECOME VERY HIGH (OVER 5,000) AND WILL NOT SHIFT. TO KEEP THE ENGINE FROM RACING, I HAVE TO LIFT MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL TO GET IT TO SHIFT. THIS CAUSES THE CAR TO SLOW DOWN QUICKLY AND WITH A LINE OF CARS BEHIND ME THAT DO NOT ANTICIPATE ME SLOWING DOWN JUST AS I AM ACCELERATING, THIS FORCES THEM TO SLOW DOWN QUICKLY UNEXPECTEDLY SO THEY DO NOT RUN INTO THE BACK OF THE TRUCK. THIS IS DANGEROUS. *TR

JUST THIS PAST WEEK HAVE NOTICED THAT THE TRANSMISSION DOES NOT SHIFT WITHOUT A BIG JOLT AND THE O/D LIGHT HAS STARTED FLASHING. AUTOZONE CHECKED FOR CODES AND SAID IT WAS P90775, WHICH IS SUPPOSE TO BE SOMETHING IN THE TRANSMISSION. TOOK IT TO A TRANSMISSION PLACE AND THEY WANT 2000-3000 DOLLARS TO BUILD NEW TRANS. BUT SAID THIS IS ONCE AGAIN TYPICAL OF A FORD. REALLY!!! IF FORD KNOWS THIS WHY ARE THEY NOT RECALLING THE VEHICLES. TRANSMISSION GUY SAID ALL THE PREVIOUS WARNING SIGNS HAVE BEEN EXACTLY WHAT HE HEARS ALL THE TIME WITH THIS MAKE MODEL AND YEAR. HELP!!! MY HUSBAND IS RELIGIOUS ABOUT CHECK FLUIDS ON OUR CARS, CHANGING THEM ECT....FIRST THING HE NOTICED WAS THERE IS NO DIPSTICK FOR THE TRANSMISSION FLUID, WHAT'S THAT ABOUT? HIDING SOMETHING? *TR

Jun 24, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018-2021 Navigator, Expedition, 2020-2021 Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, and 2021 F-150 vehicles. The transmission park pawl may engage while the vehicle is in motion, resulting in park system damage.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Park system damage may result in a vehicle rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will update the powertrain control module software, and inspect and replace any damaged transmission components as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 10, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available, anticipated in April 2027. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S48. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Explorer vehicles equipped with a 2.3L RWD, 3.3L GAS, 3.3L FHEV, or 3.0L ST powertrain. The previous powertrain control module (PCM) update completed under recall 22V-255 did not include the automatic electronic parking brake feature when the vehicle is shifted to park, as intended. In addition, the rear axle horizontal mounting bolt may fracture and cause the driveshaft to disconnect.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Without the electronic parking brake applied, the vehicle could rollaway if the driveshaft disconnects. A disconnected driveshaft can also result in a loss of drive power. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will update the PCM software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on May 31, 2023. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23S16.
