MY LETTER TO FORD MOTOR COMPANY IS AS FOLLOWS: FORD MOTOR COMPANYMAIN TOPIC: VEHICLESERVICEISSUESYOUR INQUIRY: MY 2005 EDDIE BAUER EDITION FORD EXPLORER IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION. IT SLAMS INTO REVERSE AND SLIPS GOING FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEARS. I GOT ON THE INTERNET TO RESEARCH WHAT COULD BE DONE ABOUT THIS AND WAS APPALLED BY THE STAGGERING NUMBER OF OWNERS HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM. (AUTOBEEF.COM) MANY OF THEM PAYING THE MONEY ($3,000) TO HAVE THE PROBLEM FIXED ONLY TO FIND IT HAPPENS AGAIN IN FEW THOUSAND MILES. WHEN I SAW ALL THOSE PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM THAT I WAS HAVING, I THOUGHT SURELY FORD WOULD HAVE DONE SOMETHING ABOUT THIS BY NOW. BUT AFTER SEARCHING YOUR WEBSITE FOR A RECALL NOTICE, I FOUND NOTHING!! CAN THIS BE RIGHT? HOW CAN YOU COMMERCIALISM SELLING QUALITY PRODUCTS WITH PROBLEMS LIKE THIS BEING IGNORED? IF I HAVE THE PROBLEM FIXED (BY A AUTHORIZED DEALER), WHAT ASSURANCES DO I HAVE FROM FORD, THAT THE PROBLEM WILL NOT RETURN? I'M NOT A FAN OF CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS, BUT IT SEEMS THIS IS THE ONLY WAY BIG CORPORATIONS LISTEN TO THE MASSES ANYMORE. THEIR RESPONSE: I REGRET THE CIRCUMSTANCES THAT PROMPTED YOU TO WRITE US. PLEASE BE INFORMED THAT FORD AND THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC AND SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA) WORK TOGETHER TO PROACTIVELY IDENTIFY AREAS OF CONCERN THROUGH INVESTIGATION OF CONSUMER AND DEALERSHIP FEEDBACK. IF A CONCERN IS NOTED, A RECALL IS CONDUCTED TO REMEDY A SAFETY OR EMISSIONS CONCERN IN THE INTEREST OF CUSTOMER SATISFACTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY. HOWEVER, DUE TO OUR RIGOROUS SAFETY STANDARDS AND CONSTANT TESTING, NOT ALL ISSUES RESULT IN RECALL OR CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAMS. I AM TRULY SORRY THAT CURRENTLY, THERE ARE NO SAFETY OR EMISSIONS RECALLS FOR YOUR VEHICLE CONCERN. IF A PROGRAM IS ANNOUNCED ON THIS SPECIFIC COMPONENT, FORD WILL NOTIFY YOU BY MAIL. ON THE OTHER HAND, PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT THE PROJECTED LIFE EXPECTANCY OF OUR VEHICLE PARTS IS OBTAINED THROUGH ETC. *TR

I TOOK IT TO ROB SIGHT FORD IN KANSAS CITY, MO AND THEY CHARGED ME $1,200 TO FIX THE VALVE CASING, BUT THE TRANSMISSION IS STILL SLIPPING. A WEEK LATER, THE DEFROSTER QUIT WORKING, AND NOW ONLY BLOWS OUT OF THE FRONT VENTS. I CHECKED WITH SEVERAL DEALERSHIPS AND THEY ALL SAID IT WOULD BE AT LEAST $1,100 TO FIX THE BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR. SO NOW I HAVE A 5 YEAR OLD CAR WITH 45,000 MILES THAT HAS NO DEFROST CAPABILITIES AND NEEDS A NEW TRANSMISSION, BOTH OF WHICH ARE EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS IF MALFUNCTIONING. *TR

I HAVE A 2003 FORD EXPLORER WITH APPROX. 70,000 MILES ON IT. ON JULY 15, 2010, I NOTICED THAT THE OVERDRIVE LIGHT WAS FLASHING ON AND OFF AND THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENED ON AND OFF FOR ABOUT A WEEK. ON JULY 26, 2010, I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR REPAIR AND WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION AND A NEW SOLENOID PACK. THE COST OF THESE ITEMS WAS $2,500! I PROCEEDED TO DO SOME INTERNET RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 2002 AND 2003 FORD EXPLORERS. THE TRANSMISSIONS OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE MAJOR PROBLEMS AS NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO REPLACE A TRANSMISSION WITH ONLY 70,000 MILES ON IT. I FEEL FORD NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL OF THIS ITEM AS IT HAS CAUSED MANY PEOPLE A LOT OF MONEY TO REPAIR. *TR

Jun 24, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018-2021 Navigator, Expedition, 2020-2021 Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, and 2021 F-150 vehicles. The transmission park pawl may engage while the vehicle is in motion, resulting in park system damage.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Park system damage may result in a vehicle rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will update the powertrain control module software, and inspect and replace any damaged transmission components as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 10, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available, anticipated in April 2027. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S48. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Explorer vehicles equipped with a 2.3L RWD, 3.3L GAS, 3.3L FHEV, or 3.0L ST powertrain. The previous powertrain control module (PCM) update completed under recall 22V-255 did not include the automatic electronic parking brake feature when the vehicle is shifted to park, as intended. In addition, the rear axle horizontal mounting bolt may fracture and cause the driveshaft to disconnect.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Without the electronic parking brake applied, the vehicle could rollaway if the driveshaft disconnects. A disconnected driveshaft can also result in a loss of drive power. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will update the PCM software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on May 31, 2023. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23S16.
