2018 Ford Edge

The car is 8 years old, well maintained and has mileage of @ 57,000 miles. The "engine check" lighted up in July 2026. Initial check simply required a replacement of spark plug and ignition coil. It was done immediately. However, the engine check light that initially disappeared returned 2 weeks after. When brought to a Ford Dealer, the diagnostic is TSB22-2229 (coolant intrusion in the engine). I was quoted to replace then engine by Ford at the cost of $13,000 or trade it in for $2,500!!! I read many reports of engine stall/overheating due to this problem, and it has become a major safety issue specially that this issue is proven to be a legally established engine design flaw. I do not recall that Ford, over the years, properly inform users of this coolant intrusion into the engine. As I saw safety incidents report regarding this, I made the decision to report this given that I belong to the apparent @500,000 Ford vehicles affected by this. The engine check was on and off and I could have been into a major accident, not knowing the engine can possibly stall while on a high speed. Seeking your help and attention as I believe this is a Safety Recall that Ford should have done years ago. Ford Edge continues to be traded in the secondary market. Kindly think those who may purchase this vehicle without knowing the engine has safety issues with coolant intrusion.

I have the 2.0 Ecoboost that is the subject of internal coolant leak with a potential diagnosis that matches the TRB on this issue. The car has 50K miles and is a 2018 Edge. If this is the issue it should be fixed by Ford without the need for me as an owner to foot the bill for their poor design especially since it was know for a couple years prior by Ford before I purchased this vehicle new. NHTSA should certainly force a recall. At this point it was noted by the dealer during servicing that we were low on coolant.

When started vehicle shook violently. Check engine light came on and we took the vehicle to two different mechanics. Both stated engine failure do to coolant intrusion. Needed to replace long block and quoted at least $7000 in repairs. This has been a known issue with these motors yet no recall has been issued. We also contacted our local Ford dealer and they also said we needed a new motor. We reached out to Ford for assistance in covering the cost and were told there was nothing they could do for us. This is our childs school car and I do not feel safe with her driving even to and from school. We have been the owners for 2 years. 2018 Ford Edge Titanium 2.0 Ecoboost engine. 120k miles.

<67,000 miles Engine needs rebuilt. Available for inspection. Safety - possible cause of accident or at least having one. Has been confirmed by 2 local mechanics but has not been inspected by manufacturer. In October 2025, the check engine light came on, we took it to our mechanic; he replaced the coil pack and spark plugs ($342.89 see enclosed). It was good for a few months. Then approximately April 2026 the check engine light came back on and the overheating light came on. We filled the coolant and it was ok for a month or so. This July (2026) driving down the highway on my way home the car started jerking and jolting and the check engine light started flashing. It was nearly impossible to drive. I got it home by coasting and dealing with the shaking in short spurts and pulling over off the road when cars were coming. The mechanic has now informed us that the whole motor needs replaced.

The ecoboost 2.0 engine allowed coolant to intrude into the block. The engine misfires, runs rough, and had the potential to allow large amount of coolant into the cylinder resulting in complete engine stoppage. The safety of the driver and those around the driver are at risk when the engine shuts off. The engine has been inspected by an independent service center. Yes, the engine light illuminated and a P0301 fault code was produced.

On April 15, 2026, I brought my 2018 Ford Edge SEL to an authorized Ford dealership with a loud rattling noise at startup and an illuminated check engine light. Ford Motor Company had previously sent me two written notices (September 2022 and June 2023) identifying a known cracked flexplate defect on my vehicle under Customer Satisfaction Program 22N12, describing these exact symptoms. The defect was never repaired at any of my 16 service visits. Additionally, on September 2, 2025 — just 8 days after Safety Recall 25S87 for the rear brake flexible hose was issued — the dealership presented that recall repair to me as a $532 optional paid service without disclosing it was a free safety recall I was entitled to by federal law. Safety Recall 25S89 for the rear-view camera also remains unperformed. The vehicle is currently undriveable.

The vehicle experienced engine failure due to coolant intrusion into the engine cylinders. The issue presented with engine misfire, including diagnostic trouble code P0302, rough running, and coolant entering the combustion chamber. The condition was confirmed by a dealership, which determined that the engine has internal damage and requires full engine replacement. There were no external coolant leaks observed. This failure occurred at approximately 88,000 miles and was not consistent with normal wear and tear. The issue developed without significant prior warning other than engine misfire and rough operation. This condition may create a safety risk, as engine misfire and internal damage can lead to loss of power, reduced vehicle performance, or potential engine stall while driving. Technical Service Bulletins have been issued for similar vehicles equipped with the same engine, including TSB 19-2172, TSB 19-2208, and TSB 22-2229, which describe coolant intrusion into engine cylinders and require engine replacement. This suggests the issue is not isolated and may affect other vehicles with the same engine design.
