2018 Ford Edge

My 2018 Ford Edge Titanium experienced a catastrophic engine failure due to a known manufacturing defect involving coolant intrusion into the cylinders. The defect caused the vehicle to become inoperable and required a complete replacement of the 2.0L EcoBoost engine (Service Engine Assembly Part # J2GZ6006E) at 110,821 miles. The total out-of-pocket repair cost was $7,712.78. This sudden loss of engine power poses a severe safety risk on the road.

I had two incidents when I suddenly lost forward power. One was in town and lost power and was almost rear ended by another vehicle. Another incident was when I was on the interstate and lost forward power and had to get off the road because of the traffic until I could get forward movement again. I felt that this loss of power did put myself and others at risk. I also noticed rough idling and took it to the dealer. The first time, they could not get it to act up. Then I had an check engine light come on. I took it into the dealer and they replaced wires to different cylinder (cylinder 2 was affected). Less than a month later, I noticed surging while driving and then the engine light came on again. I took it back to the dealer and they notified me that it was coolant intrusion and needed a new engine at 52,000 miles. I felt unsafe in the vehicle with the surging and loss of power. Not only to myself but also to the other drivers on the road. I have since parked the vehicle out of concern.

On September 11, 2026, my 2018 Ford Edge with approximately 126,000 miles began shaking and the check-engine light came on. There were no earlier warnings. I am concerned the engine could lose power while driving. I took it to a Ford dealership, where the advisor verbally confirmed coolant inside an engine cylinder and reported codes P0302 and P0316. The repair was quoted at $8,600 before taxes, and repair assistance was denied. The only other recent inspection was a registration inspection a few months earlier.

Engine light came on, shuttering, white smoke. Had spark plugs replaced-didn’t help. Googled to see what might be wrong and found the coolant leak issue. Took it to a private garage to have a coolant pressure test, it failed, did a bore scope and showed significant damage to #2 cylinder. Took it to a Ford dealership to file for a goodwill assist and was turned down because “the car is too old and too many miles”. I am a veteran, on a fixed income, and cannot afford to pay for a new motor. I bought this car for myself on my 78th birthday, trading in my 2006 F-150, with almost 200,000 miles, for my dream car. Now I’ve spent $11,500 and have nothing.

Ford admits "known manufacturing defect" on Eco-Boost 2.0 engine. Coolant intrusion into engine. Coolant getting into combustion chamber, at only 28K miles on my own Ford Edge. Complaints all over the internet & "[XXX]" about this. Known to cause engine fires. Requires EXPENSIVE "long block assembly replacement". The car is 8 years old, well maintained and has mileage of @ 57,000 miles. The "engine check" lighted up in July 2026. Initial check simply required a replacement of spark plug and ignition coil. It was done immediately. However, the engine check light that initially disappeared returned 2 weeks after. When brought to a Ford Dealer, the diagnostic is TSB22-2229 (coolant intrusion in the engine). I was quoted to replace then engine by Ford at the cost of $13,000 or trade it in for $2,500!!! I read many reports of engine stall/overheating due to this problem, and it has become a major safety issue specially that this issue is proven to be a legally established engine design flaw. I do not recall that Ford, over the years, properly inform users of this coolant intrusion into the engine. As I saw safety incidents report regarding this, I made the decision to report this given that I belong to the apparent @500,000 Ford vehicles affected by this. The engine check was on and off and I could have been into a major accident, not knowing the engine can possibly stall while on a high speed. Seeking your help and attention as I believe this is a Safety Recall that Ford should have done years ago. Ford Edge continues to be traded in the secondary market. Kindly think those who may purchase this vehicle without knowing the engine has safety issues with coolant intrusion.

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving 60 MPH, the coolant temperature warning light illuminated. The contact stated that immediately after the failure, the vehicle failed to accelerate and sputtered abnormally. The vehicle was restarted and taken to a service center to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that coolant was leaking into the engine block, causing engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the vehicle made an abnormal knocking sound with smoke coming from the tailpipe. The check engine warning light and overheating warning light were illuminated, and the contact became aware of an abnormal odor during the failure. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed that the head gasket had failed, causing coolant intrusion into the engine cylinders and engine failure. The vehicle was repaired. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Action Number: DP26008 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The manufacturer, Ford Motor Company, was notified of the failure by phone and provided partial assistance for the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 71,224.
