2018 Ford Edge

The component or system that failed or malfunctioned due to this issue was our cylinder number 1 had a misfire code showing. Upon further inspection of the car at the shop with a borescope camera it was found that coolant is leaking into the cylinder causing a misfire to occur after the vehicle has been driven and then sits while cooling system is still under pressure. Our safety was put at risk because while driving the car on the interstate in [XXX] around end of February to sometime in March the car was jerking and acting as though it would die at any point where cars are travelling of speeds 65-70 mph plus. We had our [XXX] old and then [XXX] old who has a neurological condition and is under a neurologist for treatment of severe migraine headaches in the car with us. We had to pull over on the side of the road, then my husband started driving slowly with emergency blinkers on, we were able to get to a dealership who looked at it and ran a code and told us that the code showed a misfire in our cylinder 1 and that we needed to replace the ignition coil, which we just replaced in May 2024 and we have a rceipt to show proof of this. The car will no longer be in our possession because when my husband learned that the car was in engine failure he wanted to trade it in because we need a safe car but we do have the reports to it. The problem was confirmed by an independent service center- Christian Brothers Automotive in Crestwood, Ky. To fix the problem we have to have a total engine replacement which is priced at 12 grand. Manufacturer refuses to take responsibility for this. Engine blockhead was also found to not line up with the engine, which had to have happened at factory when car was built. The check engine light came on 2x recently, car was jerking in May 2024 and that's when the problem 1st started. Problem corrected for almost 2 years, but then same problem reappeared. On April 15, 2026, I brought my 2018 Ford Edge SEL to an authorized Ford dealership with a loud rattling noise at startup and an illuminated check engine light. Ford Motor Company had previously sent me two written notices (September 2022 and June 2023) identifying a known cracked flexplate defect on my vehicle under Customer Satisfaction Program 22N12, describing these exact symptoms. The defect was never repaired at any of my 16 service visits. Additionally, on September 2, 2025 — just 8 days after Safety Recall 25S87 for the rear brake flexible hose was issued — the dealership presented that recall repair to me as a $532 optional paid service without disclosing it was a free safety recall I was entitled to by federal law. Safety Recall 25S89 for the rear-view camera also remains unperformed. The vehicle is currently undriveable.

The vehicle experienced engine failure due to coolant intrusion into the engine cylinders. The issue presented with engine misfire, including diagnostic trouble code P0302, rough running, and coolant entering the combustion chamber. The condition was confirmed by a dealership, which determined that the engine has internal damage and requires full engine replacement. There were no external coolant leaks observed. This failure occurred at approximately 88,000 miles and was not consistent with normal wear and tear. The issue developed without significant prior warning other than engine misfire and rough operation. This condition may create a safety risk, as engine misfire and internal damage can lead to loss of power, reduced vehicle performance, or potential engine stall while driving. Technical Service Bulletins have been issued for similar vehicles equipped with the same engine, including TSB 19-2172, TSB 19-2208, and TSB 22-2229, which describe coolant intrusion into engine cylinders and require engine replacement. This suggests the issue is not isolated and may affect other vehicles with the same engine design.

My 2018 Ford Edge with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine (approximately 100,000 miles) has experienced coolant intrusion into the engine cylinders — a known manufacturing defect documented by Ford in TSB 19-2346 (NHTSA ID 10169807). The coolant leak was discovered over the course of several months as I noticed that heat wasn't coming out and I checked that the coolant was low. I replaced the coolant twice over six months. The dealership confirmed coolant in the cylinders and stated the only repair is a full long-block engine replacement, quoted at approximately $12,000. Ford Motor Company has acknowledged this defect affects 2015–2018 Edge vehicles with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine, yet has refused to issue a recall or provide financial assistance to affected owners. This is a manufacturing defect — not owner-caused damage — as Ford's own TSB identifies erosion and corrosion of the engine block as the root cause. Ford Customer Service declined to assist when contacted. I am requesting NHTSA investigate this issue and consider a formal recall, as thousands of owners of 2015–2018 Ford Edge, Escape, Fusion, MKZ, and MKC vehicles with the 2.0L EcoBoost are facing the same failure.

The engine requires full replacement due to a cracked engine block, coolant intrusion into cylinder 2, heavy spark plug corrosion, and diagnostic code P0302 (cylinder 2 misfire). The defect was confirmed by an authorized Ford Dealership. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Safety risk: This defect causes sudden loss of engine power without reliable warning, engine stalling in active traffic, and risk of engine fire due to coolant-oil contamination - all documented safety hazards Ford has acknowledged in its own technical bulletins. The vehicle was inspected by a Ford-certified technician at an authorized dealership. The problem was confirmed and dealership issued a written diagnosis for requiring engine replacement. 100% of our services to this vehicle have been done by Ford dealerships, up to and including the appointment to diagnose the engine. Warning symptom appeared prior to failure: check engine light, an audible sloshing sound from the engine compartment. Symptoms first appeared in early December 2025, (approximately 2 weeks before the end of our warranty.) A service appointment was scheduled for the check engine light, but was cancelled because the light cleared itself. We learned in April 2026 that it was engine failure. Ford's own TSBs 19-2346 and 22-2229 document that symptoms of this defect occur with or without an illuminated MIL. Ford has not issued a recall despite NHTSA's own database showing 727 complaints on this vehicle, 128 pages of which relate to engine and engine cooling issues. They stated when asked about a warranty claim or goodwill there is no open customer service issues related to this, and since the diagnosis is post warranty they will not cover any of the approximate $10,000 it will cost to replace the engine.

Purchased the vehicle used Oct 5, 2021 with 27285 miles on it. Last year engine light came on and the problem was coolant getting into the engine block. Was told there was no recall. Dealer I purchased it from replaced the bad engine. it cost me $7100.00, which they said was their cost to replace with no extra fees. Vehicle had 33,000 miles when this happened.

When the check engine light illuminated, the vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic who diagnosed the problem as “There is an internal engine failure on number 3 cylinder. Anti-freeze is leaking into the combustion chamber and going out the tailpipe. The engine needs to be replaced.” There were no indications prior to the check engine light warning as the car is well maintained (garage kept, regular oil changes/maintenance by the Ford dealership where the vehicle was purchased and only 63,000 miles on the vehicle). The vehicle does start but is considered undrivable for any distance since the engine failure could cause the vehicle to become inoperable at any time. However, the vehicle can be made available for inspection if driving a short distance or possibly having the vehicle towed. What we are left with is a vehicle that is a total loss. We are unable to sell or trade it and continue to incur insurance costs.
