2018 Ford Edge

The 2.0L EcoBoost engine in my 2018 Ford Edge Titanium experienced head gasket failure due to Ford’s known cylinder channel design defect present in 2015–2019 EcoBoost 2.0 engines. Ford scored channels between cylinders in an attempt to improve cooling, which allows coolant to degrade the head gasket and mix with engine oil. Symptoms included white smoke from the exhaust, coolant loss, rough idle, and a check engine light prior to failure. The coolant-oil contamination caused engine performance degradation and risk of sudden failure while driving, endangering myself and other motorists. The engine drained all coolant unbeknownst to me while driving, causing the car to overheat and causing damage to the head gasket. Car had to be pulled over and towed to a shop. Head gasket was repaired, but the issue continued and more coolant was found in the engine oil in 2026. Coolant constantly has to be replenished after driving. The failure was confirmed by an independent mechanic. The vehicle has not been inspected by Ford or NHTSA. Ford has not issued a recall for this known defect despite widespread reports from 2015–2019 Edge, Fusion, and other EcoBoost 2.0 owners experiencing identical failures. I am filing this complaint to contribute to the pattern of evidence needed to compel a formal NHTSA investigation and potential recall action.

I have a 2018 Ford Edge supposedly bought "brand new" was advertised "brand new" but later find out it wasn't because dealership had titled it to themselves as a loaner. A few weeks ago my check engine light came on and my husband had it checked and was a cylinder 2 fault code. He took it to our local mechanic and he said he looked with scope and saw coolant in the cylinder. My car now sits at the Ford Dealership in Albemarle and has been diagnosed with the coolant intrusion issue and I have to pay for a engine. My calls to Ford were useless, they refused to help even though this issue was well known to them and I was never informed or I would have traded this vehicle in a long time ago. The service rep at the dealership said I was looking at about $7400 out the door plus an issue with "fluid leaking" on both front wheels, which is another $1000. She also said she would advocate on my behalf with Ford to see if they will cover any of this $$$ repair. We are waiting to find out their response. I have a line of credit set up to pay for this but really can't afford to put money into this lemon. I am disappointed in Ford as a Ford Mustang was my first car and my husband and I have bought several brand new and used vehicles over the years. We were life long Ford people but Ford doesn't stand behind well known (to them) defective engines so we are no longer. My choices are 1) pay $8500 to have the repairs fixed, 2) Ford assisting me with paying for the engine replacement 4) Selling/trading my vehicle to avoid the expensive repair and only getting between $2000 and 3000. Either way (unless Ford helps me) I am out around $7400-$8500! Most of all I feel like I've been driving around blind to the fact that a fire could have resulted. I frequently have my grandchildren in my car and it could have been devastating. Or my engine could have blown in the middle of heavy traffic putting us at risk of collision and the task of somehow getting it out of the road safely.

2018 Ford Edge 2.0L EcoBoost. Vehicle CEL came on, took it to the dealership for diagnostic and report indicated a known TSB 22-2229 to apply to my vehicle's condition. Trouble code P0302. White exhaust smoke, misfire at start up, low coolant levels, runs rough. Dealer performed a borescope inspection and found the engine long block has internal fluid leak. My safety, my kids, and others on the road were put as risk because at any given moment, the car could have overheated, stalled and caused an accident. The engine is available for inspection upon request. Prior to the CEL, the car began shaking and blowing white exhaust smoke. Now I'm left with no car as a single mom trying to make ends meet. Ford won't help to pay $13K for a new engine with a known manufacturing defect.

Error code, cylinder 2. This is 2018 Ford Edge 2L ecoboost and personal mechanic looked in cylinder and saw small amount of coolant. The car is sitting at Ford dealership in Albemarle NC at this time for full diagnostics. The car has mostly been parked since getting error code but husband said coolant is full, oil looks normal, is not cloudy and car drove fine to dealership. We are hoping this will be a minor (not replace the whole engine) fix. But I am bracing for worst, and scared it is the "well known to Ford" coolant intrusion issue due to defective engines in models 2015-2018. If so I hope Ford will do the right thing. My husband and I have been life long Ford customers, but if I have to pay for that engine with no assistance from them I will never owl another Ford. This seems to be a chronic issue with these engines. Im not sure exact date we got the error code but sometime in April. I can probably get exact date my husband had it checked from parts store if need be. I bought this car brand new (although it was technically NOT new. It was advertised and sold as new but I later found out it had been previously titled to dealership...but this is another story). I changed oil regularly, with full synthetic and I am in my late [XXX] and drive accaccordingly. This vehicle has been well taken care of. My 2018 Ford Edge (VIN: [XXX] ), equipped with a 2.0L EcoBoost engine, suffered a catastrophic engine failure due to internal coolant intrusion into the cylinders — a known defect covered under Ford Technical Service Bulletin TSB 22-2229. Approximately four months before the failure, I brought the vehicle to Red McCombs Ford in San Antonio after the check engine light illuminated. Despite this warning, the authorized Ford dealer failed to diagnose the issue or recommend any repair, and advised me it was safe to continue driving. Shortly thereafter, while driving on a busy highway with my grandchildren in the vehicle, the engine suddenly lost all power with no additional warning. We were forced to coast to the shoulder, placing us and other motorists at serious risk of collision. The vehicle was towed immediately to McCombs Ford West (7111 Northwest Loop 410, San Antonio, TX 78238), another authorized Ford dealer in the same Red McCombs Automotive Group, where technicians confirmed the engine requires full replacement at an estimated cost of $7,415.89. A warranty claim was submitted but denied on the basis that I allegedly drove too long after the problem began — a determination I dispute, as the vehicle was towed immediately upon failure without further operation. The failed engine remains at the dealership, has not been repaired, and is available for inspection upon request. The Long block of the engine, which has seemingly been a known issue, is causing damage to the engine and spark plugs. It is. This could leave me stranded or cause an accident with how violent it makes the car misfire, and sometimes it's hard to accelerate. This is an issue that Ford has acknowledged as well as the Ford dealership. It has undergone a diagnostic run at the Ford dealership. There were no warnings prior to this. The problem makes it seem like it is another issue, and with further investigation, it shows that it is the long block of the engine that is the root cause.

Vehicle, a 2018 Ford Edge SEL, recently experienced misfiring and overheating with the "check engine" light illuminated. Took the vehicle to an automotive repair shop and, after performing diagnostics, they advised the vehicle's engine coolant is leaking into the cylinders, which was the subject of a prior Technical Service Bulletin #19-2208 from Ford, and is a KNOWN DESIGN DEFECT with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine produced by Ford for this and other model vehicles. After researching this issue I determined it was the subject of a prior recall, technical service bulletin, and class action lawsuit which lead Ford to offer free repairs of the engine block and extended warranty coverage to affected vehicle owners. WE WERE NEVER NOTIFIED OF THE RECALL, TSB, OR CLASS ACTION and, therefore, were not aware of the problem and unable to take advantage of any corrective program. Now, Ford Customer Service and the Ford dealership are both refusing to effect the necessary repairs without cost to me. The vehicle's ENGINE has an ACKNOWLEDGED DESIGN FLAW that can cause misfires, hydro-locking, overheating, and total engine failure with a fire risk. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Safety risks to the driver, occupants and others is obvious. The problem has been confirmed by a Firestone automotive repair shop. No other inspections have occurred due to a fear of driving the vehicle. The "check engine" light did activate when the problem first occurred, approximately 5 days ago (04/29/2026).
