This is an extreme safety issue, if it were to occur at highway speeds amidst traffic, the likelihood of serious accident is high. Jeep dealer service says this is a known issue with many Jeep 4xe vehicles right now and no fix is known. This event has reoccurred more than 4 times. The most recent was 5/9/25.

Once a week or so, the vehicle will experience motive power loss while driving. Typically, it's for 3 or 4 seconds and is accompanied by a blinking red "Service Hybrid Electric Vehicle System" warning light on the dashboard. I've had issues with this jeep grand cherokee 4xe randomly shutting down on the highway at speeds between 65-75 mph. The service engine and transmission lights come on and the vehicle itself dies out and will power on but will not start for about 10-15 minutes afterwards. This is the fourth time I've had the issue and the dealership can not pin point a reason/fix for the car suddenly stopping. This last time the power steering went out as well these issues have almost caused several accidents . The dealership just clears the codes after saying the can not replicate the problems I'm having and gives the car back. I've gotten to the point now after almost being rear ended trying to clear the vehicle that I no longer feel safe driving it not only for myself but the other drivers around me a car with a little over 20,000 miles should not be having these issues consistently.

Bought vehicle from Joe Machens Chrysler, Columbia, MO. [XXX]. The net day after a long drive out of town, the owner put vehicle in reverse to leave home and there was an issue. The vehicle sounded like it had “run over a metal garbage can.” It vibrated the floorboard as well. It happens only when the car is in reverse. It happens immediately when you try to back up. It is available for inspection on request. Safety is not an issue, the dealer could not reproduce the sound (owner left vehicle at dealer overnight. It was only inspected by the car dealer. Two problems: 1- this happened twice, after shutting and exiting the vehicle with the key fob, the vehicle goes crazy, lights start flashing, horn honking and the doors auto lock - very dangerous as my child was locked in the car for a few minutes until i was able to play with the key enough to get it to unlock. problem #2 driving vehicle and as coming to slow down it auto shuts off in middle of road, when trying to put it back into gear it says put foot on break and restart the car. it did restart but it is super dangerous as the car behind me could've hit me as it suddenly stopped.

NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after March 1, 2021.On January 27, 2023, NHTSA opened Defect Petition (DP) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On June 24, 2023 and as supplemented on June 25, 2023, the petitioner notified NHTSA he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition.
