This complaint involves a violation of safety recall obligations for Jeep Recall 68C (NHTSA Campaign 25V741000) concerning a high-voltage hybrid battery fire hazard. On Friday, May 29, 2026, the vehicle was brought to Carman Chrysler Jeep Dodge (New Castle, DE) for mandatory recall testing. The vehicle failed the manufacturer's diagnostic analysis due to a critical internal cell separator defect. Because of the immediate thermal and fire risk, the dealership service department immediately grounded the vehicle on-site, stating it is completely unsafe to drive or park near structures. Stellantis/FCA has failed to provide a timely remedy or replacement parts, leaving our vehicle stranded on a commercial lot. Furthermore, the manufacturer has refused to provide direct-billed alternative transportation, offering only an out-of-pocket rental reimbursement model. Because parts are delayed for several months, bankrolling thousands of dollars upfront for a rental vehicle is a massive financial burden that is completely unfeasible for our family. The dealership has also failed to provide physical or digital copies of the failed diagnostic paperwork or Repair Order. We are currently left with a grounded vehicle and no viable, safe transportation.

1st incident: I pulled out from [XXX] onto [XXX] . As I was accelerating to reach the speed limit the gas pedal became unresponsive around 30-40 mph losing all propulsion. I pushed the gas pedal to the floor and it still did not accelerate, slowing the vehicle down with highway traffic approaching from behind. After 5-10 seconds the pedal suddenly became responsive and the car began to accelerate at a bit of a slower rate than typical for the first few seconds then accelerated as it should. 2nd incident: I was turning from [XXX] , into the driveway at my place of employment. The drive way is on an incline and halfway up the incline the gas pedal again became unresponsive. Due to the incline the vehicle did not continue to coast forward and quickly lost speed at which point I hit the brakes to avoid possibly rolling back into the highway traffic. I then tried the gas pedal again and the vehicle accelerated. This could become extremely dangerous if it were to occur during merging onto a busy highway with traffic moving at high speed, as just one example. The two incidents happened about a month apart. The dealership was not able to replicate the issue as it is a very random occurrence with no warning of when it will happen. No warning lights became visible on the dash. Through a quick google search it became apparent this is a known issue, with several possible quick fixes, which I relayed to the dealership when I took the vehicle in for them to fix it. It was not replicated on their test drive and no codes were showing so I was told they couldn’t do anything unless a code would pop up or they were able to replicate the issue, which is very unlikely to happen during a quick test drive. The vehicle experienced a hybrid system/charging failure documented by the servicing dealership as “service hybrid system message and vehicle will not charge.” The vehicle also had battery-related failure requiring a jump and repeated service visits. This caused loss of use and raised reliability and safety concerns.

Vehicle recently had recall 68c completed. Was driving in electric mode on the highway at approximately 55mph. Upon pressing accelerator further to increase speed to pass another vehicle, I lost all electric power and the vehicle lost speed down to 40mph, despite accelerator pedal being pressed to the floor. Approx 3-5 seconds later, gas engine started, revved high, vehicle lunged forward to 65mph, continued to accelerate after releasing accelerator pedal, and was able to be slowed by pressing brake. This same situation was replicated 9 hours later on the same highway. Dealer claims this is "normal operation."

Was driving on a crowded interstate highway that runs through Denver when my 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe suddenly turned off. Luckily, there were no cars in the adjacent lane and I had enough forward momentum to get across that lane and onto the shoulder of the road. There were no warning lights or alarm sounds, the engine just turned off. After reaching the shoulder, I restarted the car and could drive it to a dealership. It is currently at the Jeep dealership undergoing diagnostics. This was an unbelievably dangerous event that could have resulted in a multiple car pile up with injuries or deaths (most likely mine or my wife’s) since we were in such heavy traffic at a speed of about 70 mph. We are the sole owners of the vehicle and have kept up to date on all recalls of which there have been several. We had one recall outstanding which was due to be addressed in a few days which dealt with a potential battery fire. Not sure how that would relate to this event. We have not had any similar event with this car in the roughly 28000 miles we’ve driven it. If the car needs to be inspected, that would be fine. I’d hate to have this happen to anyone else.

The emergency braking system has also activated without any obstructions in front of the vehicle resulting in vehicles behind me nearly hitting me. The vehicle's four wheel drive system has also been inoperable with no parts available from Jeep to remedy this specific issue.

Consequence: Rear coil springs that detach from the vehicle while driving increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the rear coil spring lower isolators, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, are expected to be mailed September 29, 2026. Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A vehicle fire can increase the risk of injury.
Remedy: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures and not to charge their vehicles until the remedy is completed. Dealers will update the high voltage battery software, and replace the high voltage battery, as necessary, free of charge. Some owner notification letters were mailed beginning December 17, 2025. On June 8, 2023, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US, LLC (FCA) filed Safety Recall 23V-413 affecting certain 2022–2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee and2021–2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles to address rear coil springs that may not have been properly installed during vehicle production. An improperly installed rear coil spring may detach while the vehicle is in motion, creating a road hazard that can increase the risk of a crash for following motorists and may result in injury to other road users. Since the filing of Recall 23V-413, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received twenty (20) unique consumer complaints alleging rear coil spring detachments occurring after the recall remedy was performed. These reports raise concerns regarding the effectiveness of the recall remedy and suggest the possibility of additional factors not addressed by the original recall campaign. Accordingly, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is opening this Recall Query (RQ) to assess the adequacy of FCA’s remedy procedure under Recall 23V-413 and to evaluate the root cause(s) of post-remedy coil spring detachments. On June 8, 2023, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US, LLC (FCA) filed Safety Recall 23V-413 affecting certain 2022–2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee and2021–2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles to address rear coil springs that may not have been properly installed during vehicle production. An improperly installed rear coil spring may detach while the vehicle is in motion, creating a road hazard that can increase the risk of a crash for following motorists and may result in injury to other road users. Since the filing of Recall 23V-413, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received twenty (20) unique consumer complaints alleging rear coil spring detachments occurring after the recall remedy was performed. NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after March 1, 2021.On January 27, 2023, NHTSA opened Defect Petition (DP) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On June 24, 2023 and as supplemented on June 25, 2023, the petitioner notified NHTSA he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition. Based on the petitioner's withdrawal, DP22-005 is closed. Closure of this DP does not represent a determination by NHTSA regarding the subject matter of the petition.
