A/C compressor in 2007-2011 Honda CR-V has a known defect in the A/C compressor clutch. The clutch component of the compressor includes the pulley which turns the compressor motor. When the clutch fails, the compressor motor seizes up and stops the pulley from turning. The pulley on the compressor is driven by one serpentine belt on a tensioner which turns the alternator, the power steering motor, the crankshaft, the water pump, and the A/C compressor. When the A/C compressor seizes up, the belt will snap in two every time because the A/C pulley will not turn. The car will not be operable unless the A/C compressor is replaced. To replace the A/C compressor, the refrigerant must be vacuumed out, the condenser and desiccant replaced, the compressor replaced, the system recharged, and a new belt put on. This costs about $2500 at Honda or at another shop around $1700. Honda refused to fix the clutch when I took my car in after discovering the A/C was not working. I have replaced the compressor in this vehicle twice already, and now it needs a third replacement. It is a safety issue because the belt will break while driving causing power steering to go out, possibly causing a crash, the battery will not charge, leaving you stranded, the water pump will not function causing your engine to overheat, and possibly causing a blown head gasket or worse. This situation has occurred twice already but I’m reporting the latest one.

WHILE DRIVING FROM MY HOME I GOT TO A TOLL BOOTH AND AFTER PAYING THE TOLL PLACED MY FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR AND THE CAR SIMPLY REVVED AS IF IT WAS IN NEUTRAL WITH RPMS VARYING INDISCRIMINATELY. SUDDENLY THE CAR JERKED FORWARD WITH A LOUD BANG AND MOVED NORMALLY I PULLED TO THE SHOULDER AND CHECKED FLUIDS AND FOR SIGNS OF ANY PROBLEMS. WE RECEIVED NO DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS. WE CONTINUED OUR TRIP BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT SHIFT BETWEEN 3RD AND 4TH GEAR AND WE COULDN'T MAINTAIN SPEED. SUDDENLY THE INCIDENT AT THE TOLL BOTH REPEATED ITSELF. I SHUT THE CAR DOWN ALTHOUGH TEMPERATURE WAS OK AS WAS OIL PRESSURE. AFTER A SHORT WAIT WE RESUMED DRIVING AND THE CAR PERFORMED NORMALLY FOR ABOUT 50 MILES AND THEN IT WAS BACK TO NO SHIFT OR LONG DURATION BEFORE SHIFT AND THEN A BANGING NOISE. WE GOT TO OUR DESTINATION AND CAR WAS PARKED FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS. AFTER STARTING THE CAR AND PLACING IT IN DRIVE I HAD A HARD SHIFT BETWEEN 1ST AND 2ND GEAR I WAS MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN AND THE FAILURE TO ACCELERATE PUT US IN DANGER OF A REAR IMPACT COLLISION. I CALLED HONDA BUT IT WAS NOT SOMETHING THEY WOULD EVEN TALK ABOUT OVER THE PHONE. WE CONTINUED ON OUR RETURN TRIP AND WERE CRUISING AT THE 70 MPH LIMIT IN THE MIDDLE LANE ON I 75 IN FLORIDA WHEN SUDDENLY THE TRANSMISSION DROPPED OUT OF GEAR GOING INTO A NEUTRAL MODE THE ENGINE RPMS WERE MOVING ALL OVER THE PLACE. I WAS SLOWING DOWN AND ATTEMPTING TO GET TO THE SHOULDER. AFTER GETTING TO THE SHOULDER I CYCLED THROUGH ALL THE TRANSMISSION POSITIONS AND COULD ACHIEVE 3RD GEAR BUT IT WOULD GO IN AND OUT OF 4TH GEAR. WHEN THESE CONDITIONS OCCURRED I DID NOT FEEL I WAS IN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE NOR SAFE. I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE BEFORE HOWEVER I AM BEING TOLD THAT IT IS A PROBLEM ON MULTIPLE MODELS OF HONDAS. I AM A TRAINED, CERTIFIED, ACCIDENT ,ENGINEER RECONSTRUCTIONIST ( MOSTLY LARGE VEHICLES AND URBAN BUSES ). *TR

IN LINE WITH THE RECENT MAZDA RECALL FOR YELLOW SAC SPIDERS FOUND IN THE EVAC CANISTERS, MY HONDA CR-V HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. APPARENTLY, THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT HAS AFFECTED HONDA ACCORDS IN THE PAST BECAUSE HONDA HAS ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN ON INSTALLING A SPECIAL FILTER FOR HONDA ACCORDS TO PREVENT THE SPIDERS FROM ENTERING. HOWEVER, NO SUCH BULLETIN OR PART EXISTS FOR THE HONDA CR-V. AS SUCH, AFTER PAYING NEARLY $100 AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR THEM TO DIAGNOSE AND REMOVE THE SPIDERS, THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT THIS CAN'T HAPPEN AGAIN BECAUSE THEY DID NOT ADD A FILTER TO PREVENT SPIDER RE-ENTRY. AT THE MINIMUM, THESE SPIDERS WITH THEIR RESULTANT WEBS CAN SEVERELY LIMIT GAS MILEAGE. AT THE WORST, A FIRE OR ENGINE FAILURE CAN RESULT. I PETITION THAT HONDA ISSUE A RECALL FOR HONDA CR-V'S AND COVER THE LABOR AND PARTS COSTS FOR PLACING A SPECIALIZED FILTER TO PREVENT SPIDER RE-ENTRY. *TR

HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2010 ACCORD, 2007-2010 CR-V, AND 2005-2008 ELEMENT PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 1, 2004, THROUGH SEPTEMBER 3, 2010. THE OUTER RACE OF THE SECONDARY SHAFT BEARING MAY BE BROKEN DURING CERTAIN DRIVING STYLES. ADDITIONALLY, BROKEN PIECES OF THE OUTER RACE OR BALL BEARING FROM THE SECONDARY SHAFT MAY BECOME LODGED IN THE PARKING PAWL RESULTING IN THE VEHICLE ROLLING AFTER THE DRIVER HAS PLACED THE GEAR SELECTOR IN THE PARK POSITION. ENGINE STALL AND UNEXPECTED VEHICLE MOVEMENT INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH OR PERSONAL INJURY TO PERSONS WITHIN THE PATH OF A ROLLING VEHICLE.
Remedy: HONDA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL UPDATE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 27, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AUTOMOBILE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-999-1009.
