I HAD JUST CHANGED MY OIL IN APRIL 2, 2001 AND I HAD DRIVEN IT ABOUT 3,000 MILES AND I STARTRD TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE. MY OIL PRESSURE GUAGE NEVER GAVE ME ANY WARNINGS THAT I WAS LOW ON OIL. ALL OF A SUDDEN I WAS DRIVING IT TO WORK AND THERE WAS THIS TERRIBLE NOISE, I FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS NO OIL IN IT EXCEPT F…

I HAD JUST CHANGED MY OIL IN APRIL 2, 2001 AND I HAD DRIVEN IT ABOUT 3,000 MILES AND I STARTRD TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE. MY OIL PRESSURE GUAGE NEVER GAVE ME ANY WARNINGS THAT I WAS LOW ON OIL. ALL OF A SUDDEN I WAS DRIVING IT TO WORK AND THERE WAS THIS TERRIBLE NOISE, I FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS NO OIL IN IT EXCEPT FOR ABOUT 1/4 QUART. IWAS IN SHOCK BECAUSE I HAVE ALWAYS TOOK CARE OF MY CARS. I HAVE A 1982 TOYOTA TRUCK WITH 148,000 MILES ON IT AND IT IS STILL RUNNING. I FEEL THERE WAS A DEFAULT IN THE MECHANISM SOMEWHERE. THE MECHANIC SAID THE OIL WAS GOING THRU THE ENGINE AND EVAPORATING THRU THE EXHAUST. THAT IS WHY I SHOWED NO LEAKS IN MY DRIVEWAY FOR THE LOSS OF OIL. COULD YOU PLEASE HELP ME WITH MY SITUATION? ON CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, IF THE STEERING WHEEL IS REPEATEDLY TURNED UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS WHERE HIGH STEERING EFFORT AND POWER ASSIST ARE REQUIRED, FOR INSTANCE, WHEN FULLY TURNING THE WHEEL WHILE THE VEHICLE IS STOPPED, A FATIGUE CRACK MAY DEVELOP IN THE STEERING RELAY ROD.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: IF THE VEHICLE IS CONTINUED TO BE OPERATED IN THIS CONDITION, THE RELAY ROD MAY FRACTURE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STEERING RELAY ROD. THE RECALL BEGAN OCTOBER 5, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.
