WHEN I TRIED TO APPLY BRAKES TO STOP, I REALIZED THAT THE BRAKES COMPLETELY FAILED. I DID A SHARP EVASIVE TURN AND HIT THE CURB HARD IN ATTEMPT NOT TO RUN OVER PEDESTRIANS IN THE CROSSING! THE LIGHTS SUBSEQUENTLY DISAPPEARED AND BRAKES RESUMED THEIR NORMAL FUNCTION AFTER A FEW MINUTES. THE ISSUE OF BRAKES FAILING IS INTERMITTENT AND HAPPENED SUBSEQUENTLY SEVERAL TIMES AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. WHEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER AT FIRST I WAS TOLD THERE WERE NO CODES REGISTERED IN THE COMPUTER AND THE BRAKES OPERATE STANDARD. WHEN I INSISTED AFTER APPROXIMATELY 7 HOURS OF TESTING THE DEALER TOLD ME THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE BRAKE CONTROL UNIT (COMPUTER). AFTER RESEARCHING ONLINE I DISCOVERED ITS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM!!! AND YET TOYOTA IS BEHAVING IMMORAL NOT RECALLING THE FAULTY PARTS THAT IN MANY CASES CAN NOT EVEN BE DIAGNOSED. MOREOVER THEY DO NOT EVEN ADMIT THAT THERE'S AN ISSUE! *TR UPDATED 8/22/13 *CN

AFTER FINALLY ABLE TO TAKE THE CAR TO RUN DIAGNOSTICS AT THE DEALER, I WAS QUOTED $3000 TO REPLACE A FAULTY BRAKE ACCUMULATOR. I AM ALSO AWARE THAT THIS ISSUE IS MORE COMMON, ESPECIALLY ON TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRIDS AROUND 5 YEARS OLD. IT IS RIDICULOUS TO HAVE TO PAY 10% OF MY CAR'S ORIGINAL PRICE, SINCE IT IS A WIDESPREAD SAFETY HAZARD. IT IS BEYOND COINCIDENCE THAT TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRIDS ARE EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM. *TR

I FELT I COULD GET IT TO THE DEALER A COUPLE MILES AWAY SINCE THE STREETS I USED WEREN'T HIGHLY TRAFFICKED. WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THE VSC COMPUTER HAD FAILED AND THAT IT WAS A $2200 REPAIR. I DID A QUICK SEARCH: HTTP://BIT.LY/VJ77M5 AND FOUND THIS THREAD OF THIS ISSUE BEING A SOMEWHAT COMMON ISSUE AND SEEMS TO BE A SAFETY CONCERN BUT NOW RECALL: HTTP://BIT.LY/XAMKAA. *TR UPDATED 7/31/13 *CN THE BRAKE PEDAL HAD TO BE DEPRESSED ALMOST TO THE FLOOR, TO STOP THE VEHICLE. HOWEVER IT WOULD STOP COMPLETELY WITHOUT SLOWING DOWN. WHEN TRAVELING ABOVE 25 MPH, IT WOULD TAKE LONGER TO STOP.

I WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 20 MILES PER HOUR AND COMING TO A STOP WHEN THE VSC WARNING LIGHT , BRAKE WARNING LIGHT, AND TIRE PRESSURE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. THE LIGHT REMAINED ON AFTER RESTARTING THE ENGINE AND THE BRAKE PEDAL BECAME MORE RESISTANT TO BRAKING. THE PROBLEM IN MY CAR ACTUALLY BEGAN MONTHS BEFORE THE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND WAS NOT CORRECTLY DIAGNOSED AT THE DEALERSHIP. EARLY SIGNS WERE EXCESSIVE CLICKING SOUNDS COMING FROM THE BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY ON THE RIGHT FRONT AREA OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, AND AN INTERMITTENT HYDRAULIC SOUND WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS KEPT DEPRESSED. AFTER THE REPAIR I FOUND THAT THIS PROBLEM IS COMMON ON THE 2007 CAMRY HYBRID. THE REPAIR INVOLVED REPLACEMENT OF THE BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY AND WAS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE. *TR ....UPDATED 08/01/13 *BF THERE SEEMED TO BE A DELAY IN STOPPING THE VEHICLE AFTER THE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. PRIOR TO THAT, THE CONSUMER HEARD CLICKING SOUNDS. HOWEVER, BEFORE THE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON, THE STOPPING SEEMED NORMAL.

'CHECK VSC SYSTEM' ALONG WITH BRAKE LIGHT WARNING, ABS WARNING, AND PRETTY MUCH EVERY OTHER WARNING LIGHT POSSIBLE CAME ON MY 2007 CAMRY HYBRID AROUND JUNE OF 2012. I HEAR PULSATING UNDER THE HOOD CONSTANTLY & WHEN I TURN ON MY CAR WHILE IN PARK WITH MY FOOT ON BRAKE MY CAR WILL BEGIN TO ROLL BACKWARDS BY ITSELF, I ATTEMPT TO PUMP THE BREAKS BUT IT NEVER WORKS. I HAVE TO WAIT ABOUT 5-10 SEC LIKE THERE IS A DELAY WITH MY BRAKE SYSTEM WHEN I FIRST TURN ON MY CAR. ONCE THE BRAKES FINALLY KICK IN MY CAR WILL EITHER JOLT IN VERY DRASTIC WAY LIKE I SLAMMED ON MY BRAKES EVEN THOUGH MY FOOT HAS BEEN ON THE BRAKES THE WHOLE TIME OR IT WILL THROTTLE BACK ON ITS OWN LIKE I'M PUSHING ON THE GAS. I WILL NEVER PARK ON A HILL IN FEAR OF MY CAR JUST TAKING OFF ON ITS OWN WITH NO BRAKES TO STOP IT. I HAVE TO LITERALLY TURN ON MY CAR AND WAIT FOR MY BREAKS TO KICK IN BEFORE I CAN REVERSE. IT IS VERY SCARY! IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME ONCE AS WELL WHEN I WAS DRIVING AND I COMING TO A STOP, MY BRAKES JUST WENT OUT AND KICKED BACK IN ON ITS OWN. I BROUGHT MY CAR TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THEM CHECK IT OUT. THEY BROUGHT BACK A QUOTE OF $5,900! INSTEAD OF TRYING ONE THING AT A TIME THEY JUST WANTED TO REPLACE EVERYTHING AT ONCE. MY CAR WAS RIGHT AT THE 5 YEAR WARRANTY MARK BUT BECAUSE I BOUGHT MY CAR IN GUAM THEY COULDN'T TELL IF MY CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AND I WOULD HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET. 2007 ONLY 45000 MILES WITH A 6 THOUSAND DOLLAR REPAIR! THAT IS INSANE LET ALONE IT IS A HYBRID FEATURE & A SAFETY ISSUE! TO ME THIS SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY NO MATTER WHAT! LOOK ONLINE YOU CAN SEE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS EXACT ISSUE! PEOPLE HAVE EVEN MADE WEBSITES FOR IT! I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED IN TOYOTA. I'M STUCK WITH THIS CAR THAT I CANT AFFORD TO FIX! SO I DRIVE EVERY DAY IN WHAT SEEMS TO ME LIKE A DEATH TRAP! IT'S JUST NOT RIGHT. *TR

15V689000 · Visibility:power Window Devices And Controls

Oct 22, 2015

Toyota Motor Company (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 Tundra, Sequoia, Corolla, Corolla Matrix and Scion xB, 2008-2011 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2007 Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2009 Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2006-2011 RAV4, 2006-2010 Yaris, and 2009-2010 Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe vehicles. During the manufacturing of the Power Window Master Switch (PWMS), grease lubricant may have been inconsistently applied to the sliding electrical contacts.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the sliding electrical contacts are not protected by lubricant, debris and moisture that get into the switch may cause a short circuit and the switch assembly may overheat and melt, increasing the risk of a fire.

Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the switch, applying a lubricant if no abnormality is found. If abnormality is found, the PWMS circuit board will be replaced, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin December 20, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is C0M.

12V491000 · Visibility:power Window Devices And Controls

Oct 10, 2012

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 Camry, Camry Hybrid, RAV4, Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Tundra, Sequoia, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Yaris, Scion xB, Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe vehicles. The power window master switch assemblies in some of these vehicles were built using a less precise process for lubricating the internal components of the switch assemblies. Irregularities in this lubrication process may cause the power window master switch assemblies to malfunction and overheat.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the switch overheats, it may melt, possibly resulting in a fire.

Remedy: Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will inspect the switch and apply a special grease that inhibits heat build up or replace any switch damaged by the defect, free of charge. Toyota owners that experience a problem with a switch should not attempt to make repairs, but should contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331. General Motors will contact the Pontiac Vibe owners affected by this recall and GM dealers will inspect and repair switches as necessary. Those owners may contact Pontiac Customer Care at 1-800-762-2737.

09V388000 · Vehicle Speed Control:accelerator Pedal

Oct 5, 2009

TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAN GET STUCK IN THE WIDE OPEN POSITION DUE TO ITS BEING TRAPPED BY AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A STUCK OPEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN VERY HIGH VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

Remedy: TOYOTA FILED AN AMENDED DEFECT REPORT ON NOVEMBER 25, 2009, STATING THAT DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND, ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, ALTER THE SHAPE OF THE FLOOR SURFACE UNDER THE PEDAL. THESE CHANGES ADDRESS THE RISK OF PEDAL ENTRAPMENT DUE TO INTERFERENCE WITH THE FLOOR MAT. REDESIGNED ACCELERATOR PEDALS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE BEGINNING IN APRIL 2010 AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY MODIFIED PEDAL WITH THE NEW PEDAL IF DESIRED. ALSO, DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY GENUINE TOYOTA OR LEXUS ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MATS WITH REDESIGNED ALL-WEATHER MATS, OR REPURCHASE THE PREVIOUS MATS FROM OWNERS WHO DO NOT WANT THE NEW ONES. ADDITIONALLY, SOFTWARE MODIFICATIONS WILL BE INSTALLED ON CAMRY, AVALON AND LEXUS ES 350, IS 350 AND IS 250 MODELS THAT WILL ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE OVERRIDES THE ACCELERATOR IN THE EVENT BOTH BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS ARE APPLIED. TOYOTA WILL BEGIN MAILING LETTERS TO OWNERS ON DECEMBER 31, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331, LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.

On June 25, 2014, Toyota initiated a Warranty Enhancement Program (ZE1) to extend warranty coverage for the brake actuator assembly and skid control ECU/brake pedal stroke sensor in certain MY 2007 to 2011 Toyota Camry hybrid vehicles. Toyota's program covers repairs related to two conditions:internal malfunctions of the Brake Actuator assembly; and overly sensitive monitoring logic for the Brake Pedal Stroke Sensor.Primary coverage provides warranty enhancement until November 30, 2015, with no mileage limitation. After the primary coverage period ends, secondary coverage is provided for 10 years or 150,000 miles from the date of first use, whichever occurs first. In addition, on July 10, 2014, Toyota initiated Limited Service Campaign E0U to replace the Brake Reservoir Tank in MY 2007 through 2011 Toyota Camry hybrid vehicles. The LSC will be available until June 30, 2017, and will only be available at an authorized Toyota dealer.ODI's analysis of failure data determined that the majority of records were related to the Brake Actuator condition, which appeared to be the causal component in 734 complaints/field reports and 864 warranty claims. The Brake Pedal Stroke Sensor (80 reports/189 claims) and Brake Reservoir Tank (91 reports/44 claims) conditions were identified in far fewer records.Analysis of the failure data indicate that each condition provides warning prior to any reduction in power assisted braking, with less than 10 percent of all reports and claims involving diagnostic codes or complaint narratives indicating increased braking effort or reduced brake effectiveness. In addition, most of the incidents in which reduced braking assist appears to have occurred involved operation in a reduced assist mode and not a sudden, complete loss of power assisted braking.ODI assessed reduced assist mode in a subjective driving evaluation which indicated that the brake system provided normal and harddeceleration capability with reasonable increases in pedal effort.Less than one percent of reports and claims analyzed by ODI included evidence indicating a complete loss of power assisted braking occurred and this mode requires operation for a significant period of time with multiple audible and visual warnings.Repair expense was cited in many of the complaints reviewed by ODI, especially those related to the Brake Actuator, which had repair costs exceeding $3,000 according to some complaints.High repair cost appears to have been a factor in the only crash identified by ODI for the fault conditions identified by Toyota, which involved a Brake Actuator failure that was diagnosed but the owner declined repair approximately eight months prior to the reported crash incident. This preliminary evaluation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding that a safety-related defect does not exist. For additional information regarding this investigation, including analysis of the Brake Actuator, Brake Pedal Stroke Sensor, and Brake Reservoir Tank fault conditions and failure experience, see Attachment A to this closing resume.
