AFTER FINDING MOVEMENT IN ENTERING THE VEHICLE LAST NIGHT AND DURING MY NORMAL COMMUTE HOME I HAD DISCOVERED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT FRAME HAS FRACTURED AND SEPARATED AT THE FRONT INTERIOR WELD OF THE CROSS MEMBER. THIS HAS RESULTED IN A PARTIALLY DETACHED DRIVER SEAT THAT SHIFTS UNDER WEIGHT AND LOAD MOVEMENT. THIS SEPARATION ALSO LEADS TO SIGNIFICANT QUESTION OF THE CREDIBILITY AND DEPENDABILITY OF THE VEHICLE, SEAT AND SAFETY RESTRAINT IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT, SPECIFICALLY ANYTHING BEYOND SLOW SPEEDS. IT'S DOUBTFUL WHETHER THE SEAT WILL REMAIN ATTACHED TO THE VEHICLE. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FROM MY OWN FAMILY MEMBER WHO BOUGHT THE VEHICLE NEW FROM THE DEALER AND I KNOW THIS VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT OR COLLISION. DRIVING LOCAL ROADS APPROXIMATELY 25 TO 30 MPH THE DRIVERS SEAT OF 2008 G6 GXP (ELECTRONIC LEATHER BUCKET SEAT) BROKE FREE AND COLLAPSED ON THE RIGHT SIDE. UPON PERSONAL INSPECTION AND LATER VERIFIED BY THREE MECHANICS INCLUDING TWO GM CERTIFIED DEALERSHIP MECHANICS IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE CROSS SUPPORT TOWARDS THE FRONT OF THE SEAT HAD BROKEN FREE AT A WELD. THIS IN TURN CAUSED THE SEAT TO COLLAPSE DOWN AND TOWARDS THE CENTER CONSOLE. I NOTICED IMMEDIATELY THAT THE SEAT BELT IS FASTENS TO THE SEAT AND NOW FREELY FLOATS WITH THE SEAT UPON MOVEMENT. IF THE FAILURE TO THIS SEAT HAD OCCURRED DURING AN ACCIDENT THE SEAT BELT WOULD HAVE BEEN ESSENTIALLY RENDERED USELESS AS THE DRIVERS SEAT FREELY MOVES. UPON INSPECTION FROM AN ENGINEERING STAND POINT THE SEAT IS SUPPORTED BY ONE WELD APPROXIMATELY 1/8" THICK BY 1/4" WIDE AT EACH END OF THE ~.060" WALL TUBE IN SUSPENSION FROM ABOVE I RAN THEORETICAL WELD CALCULATIONS AS PER ASME AND THE WELDS ARE GOOD TO AROUND 10 G'S ASSUMING ALLOY STEEL AND NO PASSENGER. (THE RECOMMENDED MET FORCE OF ANY SEAT OR SEAT BELT IN THE FORWARD POSITION PER CFR 571.207 STANDARD 207 S4.2(A) AND (B) IS 20 TIMES THE WEIGHT OF THE SEAT. THIS IS NO CONSIDERING ANY BENDING MOMENTS PER CFR 571.207 STANDARD 207 S4.2(D). THERE IS NO REASON WHY ANY DRIVERS SEAT SHOULD FAIL UNDER NORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS OCCUPIED BY A PERSON OF AVERAGE BODY WEIGHT. THIS SEAT IS NOT SAFE AND MUST BE RECALLED. UPON SEVERAL HOURS OF RESEARCH I DISCOVERED HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS OF EXACTLY THE SAME DESIGN/MANUFACTURES INADEQUACY. THESE COMPLAINTS CROSSED ALL THREE MANUFACTURES THAT USE THIS MODEL SEAT. (PONTIAC, CHEVY AND SATURN) THERE WERE OTHER COMPLAINTS IN REGARDS TO THE HEATING MECHANISM SHORTING OUT OR BURNING THE SEAT. MINE DID SHORT. I HAVE POWER AND HEATED LEATHER SEATS FOR PONTIAC G6 GT COUPE. PROBABLY, THE SEAT CONNECTION METALS HAVE BAD QUALITY AND ARE BROKEN. WHEN WE RAISE THE SEAT IT TILTS TO ONE SIDE. IF THE SEAT MALFUNCTIONS WHILE BRAKING MAY CAUSE INJURIES. I HAVE SEEN IN THE INTERNET REPORTS FROM OTHERS FOR A SIMILAR ISSUE ON PONTIAC SEATS.

I RECEIVED ONE LOW-BALL ESTIMATE FROM AN AUTO SHOP WHO PRICED $425 TO REPAIR THE SEAT; I THEN RECENTLY HAD THE LOCAL GM DEALERSHIP LOOK AT IT - AND THEY QUOTED OVER $1,000 TO REPLACE THE DRIVER SEAT, RAIL AND SEAT COVER. CORP GM CUSTOMER SERVICE HAS SINCE GIVEN ME THE RUNAROUND. I CALLED HER ON IT AND POINT BLANK ASKED IF GM WOULD BE ISSUING A RECALL AND REPAIRING THESE DRIVERS SEATS. I WAS DRIVING IN MY CAR WHEN I NOTICED MY SEAT MOVED WHEN I TURNED THE VEHICLE. UPON ARRIVAL HOME, I FOUND I COULD MOVE THE ENTIRE SEAT AND IT WAS NO LONGER PROPERLY ATTACHED TO THE TRACK ASSEMBLY. RIGHT AROUND THE SAME TIME, THE ELECTRIC HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT ON THE DRIVERS SEAT ALSO BROKE - AND BROKE THROUGH THE SEAT AND NOW IS EXPOSED - I CAN SEE 3 OF THE SPOKES OF THE WHEEL. IF I RAISE THE HEIGHT OF THE SEAT, THE ENTIRE SEAT SHIFTS AND LEANS AGAINST THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR. IF I LOWER THE SEAT ALL THE WAY TO THE GROUND, THE SEAT MOVES CLOSER TO THE "CENTER" OF WHERE IT SHOULD REMAIN. HOWEVER, THE SEAT IS ALWAYS SLANTED AND THE ENTIRE DRIVERS SEAT PIECE IS SKEWED. MY HUSBAND ACTUALLY HAS TORN HIS PANTS ON THIS EXPOSED EQUIPMENT WHEN DRIVING MY VEHICLE!! NEITHER MY HUSBAND NOR I AM HEAVY PEOPLE (LESS THAN 200LBS EACH); SURELY THIS VEHICLE WAS DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND THE WEIGHT OF A 185LB INDIVIDUAL. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE - THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF POSTS OF SIMILAR EXPERIENCES ON THE OFFICIAL PONTIAC WEBSITE BLOG PAGE. IN ADDITION, THERE ARE MORE SIMILAR SEATING POSTS FOUND ON VARIOUS DIY AUTO REPAIR BLOGS ONLINE. I CANNOT AFFORD $1000+ FOR THE DEALERSHIP TO REPAIR MY CAR - OR PAY $850 FOR A JUNK YARD REPLACEMENT SEAT AND TRACK REPAIR FROM A COLLISION REPAIR SHOP. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and the BAS and harness connector, and will relearn the brake pedal home position, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed an Interim letter to customers on July 14, 2014. The recall began on August 18, 2014. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2006 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2006 Malibu Maxx, 2009-2010 HHR (non-turbo), 2010 Cobalt, 2008-2009 Saturn Aura and 2004-2007 Ion, and 2005-2009 Pontiac G6. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will perform one of four bulletins. Parts are not currently available. GM expects to send an interim notification around May 28, 2014. When parts are available, owners will be mailed a second letter to come in to have the applicable bulletin applied. Bulletin 14115 covers model year 2004-2007 Saturn Ion, 2009-2010 Chevrolet HHR and 2010 Chevrolet Cobalts. Dealers will replace the EPS motor. Bulletin 14116 covers model year 2004-2006 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, 2005-2006 Pontiac G6 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from March 1, 2008, through June 27, 2008. Dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly. Bulletin 14117 covers model year 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from February 1, 2008, through February 28, 2008. Dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly and EPS motor controller unit. Bulletin 14118 covers model year 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from October 1, 2007, through January 31, 2008. Dealers will replace the EPS motor controller unit. General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Saturn Aura and model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 vehicles, equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission. On these vehicles, the tabs on the transmission shift cable end may fracture and separate.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the tabs were to fracture and separate, the shift lever and the actual position of the transmission gear may not match. The driver would be able to move the shifter to 'PARK' and remove the ignition key, but the transmission gear may not be in 'PARK.' The vehicle may not be able to be restarted and the vehicle could roll away after the driver has exited the vehicle, resulting in a possible crash without prior warning.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install a retainer over the cable end or replace the shift cable as necessary. This service will be performed free of charge. Notification to owners began on on November 9, 2012. Owners were instructed to not bring their vehicles for repair until January 2013. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-521-7300.

Complainants allege that the brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is not depressed, and turn off once the brake pedal is applied. In addition the driver may have difficulty shifting out of PARK, or the cruise control may not engage properly. In response to ODI?s Information Request, General Motors (GM) submitted a significant number of warranty claims and over 1, 100 reports that potentially relate to the alleged problem. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query RQ13-001 on February 4, 2013 in response to complaints alleging that the brake lights do not operate properly on model year (MY) 2005-2008 Pontiac G6 vehicles. Complainants allege that the brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is not depressed, and turn off once the brake pedal is applied. In addition the driver may have difficulty shifting out of PARK, or the cruise control may not engage properly. In response to ODI?s Information Request, General Motors (GM) submitted a significant number of warranty claims and over 1, 100 reports that potentially relate to the alleged problem. ODI is continuing its analysis of this data. One of the GM reports also alleged a vehicle crash.
