THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND A REPRESENTATIVE WAS SENT TO EXAMINE THE VEHICLE AT PRIORITY NISSAN (6390 RICHMOND RD, WILLIAMSBURG, VA). THE FRONT SENSORS WERE REPLACED AND A SOFTWARE UPDATE WAS PERFORMED, BUT THE FAILURES CONTINUED. ALSO, WHILE IN REVERSE, THE REAR SENSORS MALFUNCTIONED AND FAILED TO ALERT THAT A SECOND VEHICLE WAS POSITIONED IN THE REAR, WHICH COULD CAUSE THE DRIVER TO BACK INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. IN ADDITION, WHILE DRIVING WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED AND SET AT 55 MPH, THE SPEED WOULD INCREASE ON ITS OWN WHILE DRIVING ON A CURVED ROAD. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURES WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000. *BF AS OF 5/30/19 NO VOLUME WITH NAVIGATION SYSTEM STILL, A/C NOT WORKING RIGHT. VEHICLE CONTINUES TO JERK WHEN PUSHING ON THE GAS. WHEN A CONSUMER HAS ANY TYPE OF WARRANTY ISSUE OR SAFETY ISSUE SERVICED BY THEIR LOCAL NISSAN DEALER, IS NISSAN NORTH AMERICA REQUIRED TO REPORT THE ISSUE TO NHTSA? BECAUSE I'M CONFIDENT NISSAN KNOWS EXACTLY HOW MANY NAVIGATION SYSTEMS EXACTLY LIKE MINE THEY HAVE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW THAT NUMBER. BECAUSE IF I HAD SEEN THAT AMOUNT OF REPLACEMENTS WHILE I WAS STILL DOING NEW CAR REASEARCH IN JAN 2019, I WOULD NOT HAVE PURCHASED THIS BRAND NEW ROGUE SL PLATNUM INT. & BOSE PREMIUM SOUND PKG! ALREADY MY BRAND NEW ROGUE IS EXPERIENCING SEVERAL SERIOUS ISSUES. THE NAVIGATION/AUDIO SYSTEM SCREEN WITH NISSANCONNECT SERVICE JUST GOES BLACK. IT INTERMITTENTLY AND FOR NO APPARENT REASON REBOOTS BY ITSELF ON AND OFF - CONSTANTLY AFTER THE ROGUE HAS BEEN STARTED. IT FACTORY RESETS ITSELF AS MANY AS 25 TIMES IN A 10 MILE DRIVE. SEVERAL OF THOSE 25 REBOOTS MY RADIO WILL TURN ITSELF BACK ON AT AN EXTREMELY LOUD VOLUME, STARTLING ME WHILE I'M DRIVING. THAT IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE! THE BACK-UP CAMERA STILL WORKS MOST OF THE TIME, BUT NOT ALL THE TIME. I'M CURRENTLY WAITING A FULL 19 DAYS WHILE THIS REPLACEMENT PART IS ON BACKORDER FROM NISSAN. AND I'M DRIVING THE ROGUE WITH THE STARTLING, BLARING AUDIO IN THIS CONDITION THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE WAIT. NISSAN NORTH AM WON'T APPROVE A LOANER THRU MY DEALER BECAUSE MY CAR IS STILL "DRIVABLE". DRIVABILITY AND SAFETY TO NISSAN ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. HOW MANY MORE OF THESE ROGUES WITH THIS PROBLEM ARE YOU KNOWINGLY PLANNING TO SELL TO UNWITTING CONSUMERS, NISSAN? MOST CONSUMERS DO NOT KNOW TO REPORT THIS TO NHTSA FOR THEMSELVES, SO IT IS GOING UNREPORTED. NISSAN CERTAINLY ISN'T REPORTING THE ISSUE! WHERE IS THE SERVICE BULLETIN? WHY ISN'T ANYONE SAYING, "YES, WE KNOW THERE IS A PROBLEM."? WHAT IS THE SOLUTION? THERE ISN'T ONE. YOU KNOW WHY? NISSAN KNOWS PEOPLE DON'T WANT A CAR IF IT HAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT.

ON JAN 29, 2019, MY VEHICLE ENGAGED EMERGENCY BRAKING WHILE I WAS CROSSING A RAILROAD CROSSING ON A ROUGH CITY STREET. THE VEHICLE BEGAN BEEPING, CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP, THE BRAKE PEDAL AUTOMATICALLY PRESSED ALL THE WAY DOWN, AND WOULD NOT DRIVE UNTIL I PRESSED THE BRAKE. THIS LEFT ME SITTING ON AN ACTIVE RAIL CROSSING WITH A VEHICLE COMING UP BEHIND ME. THIS SIMILAR SITUATION HAS HAPPENED TO ME SEVERAL OTHER TIMES WHILE CROSSING UNDER BRIDGES AND ENTERING PARKING GARAGES BUT IN THOSE CASES, ONLY LIGHT BRAKING OCCURRED AND I WAS ABLE TO PROCEED WITHOUT NEEDING TO PRESS THE BRAKE.

WHILE DRIVING, THE AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING SYSTEM DASH LIGHT FLASHES. NISSAN SUGGESTS THE ISSUE IS DUE TO FROST. THE RADAR SENSOR IS LOCATED BEHIND THE FRONT GRILLE EMBLEM AND MAY BE BLOCKED DUE TO FROST BUILD UP. NISSAN CLAIMS THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE, AND THERE IS NO FIX. HOW CAN A VEHICLE'S BRAKING SYSTEM BE UNAVAILABLE, YET THERE IS NO ISSUE? THE ISSUE SHOULD BE RECALLED. PERHAPS RELOCATE THE SENSOR. ALSO, IF IT IS IN FACT DUE TO A FROSTY EMBLEM, THEY SHOULD ADD A HEATED EMBLEM TO PREVENT THE BUILD UP.

THE AEB SYSTEM IS MALFUNCTIONING. ON MULTIPLE OCCASSIONS THE CAR SUDDENLY BREAKS EVENTHOUGH THERE IS NOTHING IN FRONT OF THE CAR. IT HAS ONLY HAPPENED TO ME WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY - GENERALLY THE ROADS ARE CLEAR. ON ONE OF THE MULTIPLE OCCASSIONS, CLEARING THE RADAR OF BUG SPLATTER SOLVED THE PROBLEM. ON ALL THE OTHER OCCASSIONS, THERE WAS NO OBSTRUCTION TO THE RADAR. THE BRAKES COME ON, THE AEB LIGHT ON THE CONSOLE COMES ON, A WARNING FLASHES, AND THEN THE CAR MOVES ON AS IF NOTHING HAPPENED. AFTER DOING THIS SEVERAL TIMES OVER SEVERAL MILES, THE AEB LIGHT COMES ON AND IT DESPLAYS AN ERROR MESSAGE ABOUT THE FRONT RADAR IS NOT WORKING AND THE CRUISE IS DISABLED. ON ONE OF THE OCCASSIONS A LARGE PICKUP TRUCK TOWING A TRAILER WAS RIGHT BEHIND ME WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY PUT ON THE BRAKES. FORTUNATELY, HE WAS ABLE TO STOP BEFORE HITTING MY CAR. WHEN I HAD THE CAR SERVICED AT THE DEALER, I TOLD THE SERVICE REP ABOUT THE ISSUE. HE INDICATED THAT A SHADOW OR SOMETHING LIKE A LEAF BLOWN ACROSS THE RADAR CAN CAUSE IT TO REACT. I DID NOT NOTICE ANY OCCRENCE OF SUCH. I AM EXTREMELY CONCERNED THAT SOMEONE FOLLOWING TO CLOSE WILL END UP RAMMING ME IN THE REAR END. AFTER DOING AN INTERNET SEARCH, I HAVE FOUND MULTIPLE OCCURENCES OF THIS PROBLEM AND THAT NISSAN HAS SENT OUT SEVERAL TECHNICAL BULLETINS ABOUT THE PROBLEM. AS NOTED ABOVE, THERE HAVE BEEN MULTIPLE EVENTS OF THIS TYPE. IT TYPICALLY HAPPENS ON THE HIGHWAY.

PE19010 · False Automatic Emergency Braking

Opened Sep 9, 2019 · No close date supplied

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Forward Collision Avoidance: Automatic Emergency Braking

NHTSA received a defect petition (DP19-001) from the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) on March 21, 2019 alleging that the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system on Model Year (MY) 2017-2018 Nissan Rogue and Rogue Sport vehicles was engaging in cases where there was no obstruction in the path of the vehicle. The CAS petition additionally alleges that, based on Nissan's actions, the manufacturer is aware of the issue due to issuing a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) launching two "Quality Actions," and initiating a "Customer Service Initiative" in relation to it. CAS contends that Nissan's actions do not represent an adequate long-term solution to the problem, as the action is only available during the basic coverage period of the warranty. CAS also argues that the alleged failures are an unreasonable risk to safety and views Nissan's communications as not acknowledging the potential safety issue involved, instead treating the alleged problem as a performance update. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) analyzed Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) complaints received from consumers and identified a total of 129 unique subject vehicle reports (for all submission dates) alleging a false positive triggering of AEB. Of these complaints, three were identified that contained allegations of a collision resulting from the activation of the system, and all three indicating related injuries. In response to ODI's April 15, 2019 Information Request letter, Nissan provided data indicating that it has received 750 unique subject vehicle complaints relating to false positive activation of the AEB system. Of these complaints, 12 were identified that contained allegations of a collision resulting from the activation of the system. Four complaints contained allegations of injuries, three of which were the result of a collision. These complaints included duplicates of complaints that ODI received. The injury allegations were limited to soft tissue type injuries such as whiplash and bruising.Based on its review of the information identified to date, ODI has granted the petition and is opening this preliminary evaluation in order to evaluate the cause, scope and frequency of AEB false positive activations, as well as to evaluate the suitability of the manufacturer's campaign to address the concern or improve performance of the AEB system. The complaints cited can be viewed at NHTSA.gov under the following ODI identification numbers: 11230875, 11230481, 11230361, 11229400, 11229302, 11229294, 11228994, 11223074, 11222925, 11222644, 11220499, 11218713, 11218608, 11217157, 11210334, 11210256, 11210148, 11209127, 11209032, 11207333, 11205931, 11205717, 11205661, 11205172, 11205124, 11205027, 11204803, 11204349, 11204324, 11196805, 11196561, 11196466, 11196091, 11195938, 11195574, 11194380, 11193989, 11192761, 11192283, 11192063, 11190855, 11190840, 11189976, 11187374, 11186903, 11185890, 11185883, 11185132, 11183406, 11180813, 11174713, 11173666, 11173302, 11172299, 11171331, 11170989, 11165434, 11164646, 11162898, 11162502, 11162396, 11161413, 11161230, 11155985, 11155209, 11155181, 11154181, 11153607, 11153334, 11151373, 11151028, 11142595, 11142557, 11142386, 11141775, 11141433, 11141387, 11141347, 11140604, 11139711, 11139226, 11133402, 11132376, 11130998, 11130662, 11129949, 11128704, 11124099, 11123564, 11123353, 11123321, 11122783, 11119475, 11119300, 11118604, 11115088, 11113479, 11113371, 11112371, 11111659, 11111057, 11110919, 11110689, 11104075, 11103844, 11103437, 11102715, 11102333, 11100117, 11099313, 11091006, 11089960, 11089798, 11089533, 11088815, 11088718, 11081072, 11079453, 11073644, 11072718, 11065505, 11061598, 11057739, 11056061, 11055766, 11048349, 11035301, 11033225, and 10972343.
