The steering wheel becomes sticky when turning at highway speeds and around 30 MPH. This problem happens consistently when turning at certain speed. Lot of extra effort needs to be applied to bring the sticky steering wheel back to the original position. This extra effort makes the turning very dangerous as the sticky steering wheel doesn't smoothly reverts back to normal position. Any extra effort applied to bring the steering back to the normal position results in a jerky, sudden, and rash movement of the vehicle. Without the conscious application of this unnatural and abnormal extra effort, the vehicle is more prone to accidents during turning particularly at highway speed. Contacted the nearest local dealer. Local dealer outright refuses to diagnose the problem without charging the fee even though car is well under warranty. Please take action so that this safety issue can be corrected. Also, Mazda needs to improve customer service by informing the dealer(s) not to refuse a basic safety related diagnostic unless a hefty diagnostic fee is paid by the the owner of the new vehicle.

My vehicle has already had recall remedy for 24V-022, still experiencing "notchy" steering (momentary increase in steering effort). Mid corner the steering wheel locks into place, I can let my hands off the wheel and the steering wheel maintains the steering angle, I have to forcibly move it out of the lock to either increase or decrease turning radius. Incident 1: While driving my 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV at low-to-moderate speed, the vehicle suddenly and completely locked up without any driver input. There was no gradual slowing or normal braking behavior. Instead, the vehicle went immediately from moving to an abrupt, forceful stop, as if maximum braking was applied instantly. There were no warning lights, alerts, or audible signals before or during the event, and there were no obstacles or vehicles in front of me. Incident 2 (approximately 6 months later): A second, nearly identical event occurred while I was accelerating or cruising. The vehicle again immediately locked up and came to a sudden stop with no warning and no driver input. There was no progressive braking or deceleration. The stop was instantaneous and extremely forceful, causing me to lurch forward into the steering wheel. There were no hazards or objects present that would justify emergency braking. Additional Details: Both events involved an immediate, full-force stop with no transition or gradual braking. There were no dashboard alerts, warning sounds, or messages during either incident. The behavior did not match any known system alerts (such as door open or limp mode). The dealership was unable to reproduce the issue and found no diagnostic trouble codes. This creates a serious safety risk, especially the risk of being rear-ended during normal driving.

While driving the 2024 Mazda CX-90 and making turns the steering wheel become difficult to straighten/reduce deflection from the turned position. This has caused the vehicle to depart from our lane in traffic on the freeway multiple times. This has caused safety risk for ourselves with traffic barriers as well as with vehicles in other lanes. It is possible to over power the “sticking point” however it seems to be getting worse. A mazda service center has been contacted and they denied that they are required to remedy this because they already completed the recall for this issue in the past. The vehicle is available for inspection. The issues seems to be somewhere in the steering linkage or steering wheel mechanism based on the feel of the issues.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 26 complaints and several Early Warning Reporting (EWR) Field Reports alleging intermittent and brief increases in steering effort (described as “sticky steering”) during the drive cycle in model year (MY) 2024 CX-90 vehicles manufactured by Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) subject to Recall 24V2022. In each complaint, the vehicle had the recall remedy completed prior to the reported incident. Recall 24V022 addresses a sudden and unexpected change of steering effort while driving caused by excessive worm gear friction force. After receiving the recall 24V022 remedy, consumers report sudden increases of steering effort while driving. Sudden and unexpected change of steering effort while driving may increase the risk of a crash. ODI is opening this Recall Query (RQ) to assess the adequacy of the remedy for Recall 24V022 and to identify the cause(s) of the conditions leading to the post-remedy reports.
