2018 Livin' Lite Camplite

PETITION TO EXPAND RECALL 18V-643 / SAFETY DEFECT REPORT Vehicle: 2018 Livin' Lite CampLite 16DBS I am writing to formally report a critical structural safety defect in the frame and drawbar assembly of my 2018 Livin' Lite CampLite 16DBS travel trailer. I respectfully request that the NHTSA investigate this condition and petition to expand NHTSA Recall 18V-643 to include the 16DBS model line. Background and Context (Recall 18V-643) NHTSA Campaign Number 18V-643 covers select 2017–2019 Livin' Lite CampLite trailers (models 21BHS, 21RBS, 23RKS, and 23RLS). The recall identifies drawbar/tongue frame welds that are prone to severe stress cracking under normal highway operation, creating an immediate risk of frame detachment while towing. My 2018 CampLite 16DBS shares the same frame fabrication methods, materials, and drawbar geometry as the larger models recalled under 18V-643. Description of Defect During a recent safety inspection, I identified structural failure on my 16DBS trailer mirroring the defect described in Recall 18V-643: Location: Cracking along the drawbar/A-frame tongue welds near main frame junction. Photos to be attached. Note: photos are identical to those shown the recall remedy photos. Condition: Visible structural cracks extending through the weld bead. Usage History: Operated strictly within Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) limits, with no off-road abuse, accidents, or frame modifications. Without intervention, this defect poses a direct risk of catastrophic drawbar separation at highway speeds. Requested Action Given that this manufacturing defect extends beyond the currently recalled 21-foot and 23-foot models, I request that NHTSA: Initiate an inquiry into expanding Recall 18V-643 to cover the 2018 Livin' Lite CampLite 16DBS and other models manufactured in the same timeframe.

The contact owns a 2018 Livin' Lite Camplite. The contact stated that the welding that attached the tongue of the trailer to the frame had fractured. The contact had taken the vehicle to a welding shop however, the vehicle was not repaired. The contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and opened a case regarding the failure. The approximate failure mileage was unknown.

THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V643000 (STRUCTURE) AND STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE LOCAL DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THE TRANSPORTATION FEES WOULD BE AT THE OWNER'S EXPENSE. THE CONTACT WAS REFERRED TO A LOCAL DEALER. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
