DANGEROUS VEHICLE - SAME THING AS PREVIOUS COMPLAINT. YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU HAVE ACCELERATION AND ARE FEARFUL OF GOING INTO TRAFFIC. ALSO ON A HOT DAY THE AIR CONDITION WOULD NOT WORK AND THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE.

DANGEROUS TRANSMISSION. WHILIE THE CAR WAS IN MOTION GOING DOWN AN ON-RAMP TO GET ONTO THE INTERSTATE I PROCEEDED TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT I DID NOT HAVE ANY POWER. THE CAR WAS STILL ON BUT THERE WAS NOT ANY ACCELERATION, I KEPT PRESSING AND PRESSING AND NOTHING. SO I PULLED OFF THE ROAD SO A SEMI WOULDN'T RUN OVER ME. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND THEN WAITED ABOUT A MINUTE. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR MOVING A LITTLE BIT AT A TIME. ONCE I REACHED 70MPH IT WAS LIKE IT WOULDN'T SHIFT GEARS. SO I DECIDED TO DRIVE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. WHILE STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT I PROCEEDED INTO THE INTERSECTION ONLY TO HAVE IT NOT BE ABLE TO MOVE ANYMORE SO I WAS BLOCKING TRAFFIC. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND DID A DIAGNOSTIC ONLY TO FIND OUT THERE WERE NO ISSUES. CLEARLY THIS FUNCTION DOES NOT DO IT'S JOB IN REPORTING THE PROBLEM. THE SERVICE MANAGER WAS NOT ABLE TO GET ME AN APPOINTMENT UNTIL 5 DAYS LATER TO LOOK AT IT. ONLY TO FIND OUT THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THIS ISSUE. I THOUGHT IT WAS IN MY HEAD BECAUSE THIS STARTED WHEN I ONLY HAD THE CAR A MONTH. YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. ALSO, THE CAR WILL LUNGE AT LOW SPEEDS AND SORT OF BUCK.

THERE ARE SEVERAL PROBLEMS. THE DUAL CLUTCH AN AUTOMATED MANUAL TRANSMISSION ON MY 1.6-LITER TURBO VERSION HESITATES UP TO SEVERAL SECONDS WHEN ACCELERATING, THIS CAN OCCUR WHEN TURNING, ACCELERATING FROM A FULL STOP, MOVING AT A SLOW SPEED 1-5MPH. THE TACHOMETER REVS UP BUT THE CAR STAYS STATIONARY. THIS HAPPENS MULTIPLE TIMES A WEEK. THE SCARIEST TIME WAS WHEN I WAS ATTEMPTING TO MERGE ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE CAR DID NOT ACCELERATE AND CARS HAD TO SWERVE TO AVOID HITTING ME.. ADDITIONALLY IF YOU ARE IN BUMPER TO BUMPER TRAFFIC INCHING ALONG, IT HESITATES TO ACCELERATE AND WHEN IT FINALLY DOES, YOU'RE AFRAID YOU WILL HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF YOU. I HAVE FOUND WHEN INCHING ALONG 1-5 MPH DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC THAT I MUST LEAVE 1-2 CAR LENGTHS IN FRONT OF ME DUE TO THE LURCHING AND HESITATION. SUPPOSEDLY THE RECALL IN SEPTEMBER 2016 FIXED THIS ISSUE BUT IT DID NOT. WHEN I CONTACTED HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY HEADQUARTERS, THEY TOLD ME THE CAR IS WORKING AS DESIGNED. SO THEY DESIGNED IT TO LURCH AND NOT ACCELERATE? DOESN'T SEEM RIGHT TO ME. I HAVE DOCUMENTATION OF MY CONTACTS WITH THE LOCAL DEALER AND CORPORATE, BUT NOT WITH ME TODAY.

DUAL CLUTCH TRANSMISSION RECALL: I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH MY TUCSON A WEEK AFTER PURCHASE (JULY 2016). IT'S A BRAND NEW VEHICLE. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH SHIFTING, ACCELERATING, AND HAVE TAKEN MY VEHICLE IN TO BE LOOKED AT SEVERAL TIMES. THE HYUNDAI DEALER IN IOWA SAID THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO. THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE ISSUES I HAVE BEEN HAVING WITH MY VEHICLE BUT NO FIX. IT'S THE DCT (DUAL CLUTCH TRANSMISSION) RECALL; I RECEIVED THIS IN THE MAIL A MONTH OR TWO AFTER PURCHASING MY VEHICLE. THE ONLY SOLUTION THERE IS TO "FIX" THIS EXTREMELY UNSAFE PROBLEM IS AN UPDATE! HYUNDAI SAID THAT I WOULD NEED TO CONTINUE TO BRING IT IN AS LONG AS I'M HAVING THESE ISSUES TO UPDATE. THIS IS A BAND-AID. THERE IS NO PERMANENT FIX AND I FEEL EXTREMELY UNSAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. WHEN MERGING ONTO THE INTERSTATE, I CAN'T ACCELERATE AND HAVE ALMOST BEEN IN MANY ACCIDENTS DUE TO LACK OF POWER AND ACCELERATION FROM THE DCT. THIS HAPPENS NOT ONLY WHEN MERGING ONTO THE INTERSTATE, BUT ALSO IN RURAL AREAS LIKE THE HIGHWAY, MAIN CITY STREETS, AND NEIGHBORHOODS. THIS HAPPENS EVERY DAY FROM A STOP OR WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE FROM A SLOW SPEED. I HAVE A FAMILY, AND THE WHOLE REASON FOR THIS PURCHASE WAS BECAUSE OF THE SAFETY FEATURES; THERE IS NOTHING SAFE ABOUT THIS VEHICLE. I WAS SOLD A DEFUNCT CAR AND AM EXTREMELY UPSET THAT HYUNDAI SOLD ME THIS VEHICLE WHEN THERE WAS A RECALL IN THE MAKING. *TR

THIS HAPPENED FOR MONTHS, I CALLED THE DEALER AND THEY BRUSHED OFF. TWO WEEKS AGO WHILE TRYING TO MERGE ON THE HIGHWAY, I PRESSED THE GAS BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE ONLY REVVED THEN OUT OF NOWHERE IT LAUNCHED AND ALMOST HIT ANOTHER CAR. THEN TODAY, IT LITERALLY WENT DEAD?DEAD! WHILE DRIVING AT 25 MPH ON FORDHAM RD (A BUSY STREET THE BRONX) THE CAR SLOWLY LOST POWER AND STOPPED FOR 2-3 SECONDS. THEN START UP AGAIN. THIS CAR IS A DEATH TRAP!!! SOME ONE COULD HAVE RUN IN THE BACK OF MY CAR. I HAVE BEEN TO THE DEALER TWICE AND THEY CLAIMED TO FIX THE DCT BUT THAT'S CRAP. HYUNDAI WHO HAS DONE NOTHING AND THEY KNOW THIS VEHICLE IS UNSAFE. I CANT EVEN DRIVE MY 2 YR GODDAUGHTER IN THIS THING. I THINK HYUNDAI IS WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO DIE. THEY NEED TO STOP SELLING THIS CAR IMMEDIATELY AND REFUND EVERYONE'S MONEY. *TR

Opened Sep 12, 2022 · Closed Dec 12, 2023
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Engine
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) received a letter dated July 13, 2022, petitioning the Agency to initiate a safety defect investigation into loss of motive power allegations attributed to oil drain pan assembly failures on certain Hyundai Motor America, Inc. and Kia America, Inc. vehicles spanning Model Years (MY) 2005-2021. The Petitioners cited examples of complaints indicating that the subject vehicles were experiencing rapid loss of engine oil due to oil drain plug back outs, resulting in loss of motive power and/or catastrophic engine damage. Additional complaints were provided which alleged that the oil drain pans lack sufficient structural integrity and are susceptible to cracking. The petition itself can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI number 11481745. On September 12, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Defect Petition (DP22-003) to evaluate the Petitioners’ request. The Petitioners have provided additional complaints within four supplemental letters dated January 31, 2023, March 21, 2023, May 23, 2023, and August 4, 2023. ODI’s evaluation included the review and analysis of the complaints and supporting information submitted by the Petitioners, as well as additional complaints submitted directly to NHTSA which referenced either the oil drain plug or a crack in the oil pan. After reviewing the available data, ODI has not identified evidence that would support opening a defect investigation into the oil drain pan assemblies of the subject vehicles. Based on a review of the available information, a loss of motive power resulting from an oil drain plug back out has not occurred between the initial sale of a vehicle and the completion of its first oil change. If during an oil change service, a technician fails to remove the existing drain plug gasket before installing a new gasket, it is likely that a proper seal between the drain plug and the oil pan will not be made. An improper seal between the drain plug and oil pan could lead to the backing out on the drain plug, resulting in the sudden loss of oil while driving. Additionally, the provided examples of oil pan cracks were localized to the immediate vicinity of the oil drain plug and/or appeared to be the result of direct-contact with a tool during servicing. There is no information to support that a vehicle-based defect exists relating to the oil pan assembly, and instead the documented incidents are related to the failure to follow the proper maintenance procedures during oil change service. In October 2023, Hyundai published a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) that provided detailed instructions for oil change service on its gasoline powered vehicles, specifically highlighting the need to remove and replace the existing drain plug gasket prior to reinstalling the drain plug. After a thorough review of the material submitted by the petitioner, the information already in NHTSA's possession, and the potential risks to motor vehicle safety implicated by the petitioners' allegations, NHTSA does not believe that a formal investigation is warranted. Therefore, the petition is denied. A Federal Register Notice (FRN) further detailing NHTSA’s reasons for denial of the petition will be published. The reference numbers for the complaints to NHTSA cited by the petitioner can be found in the petition submission documents in the public file for DP22-003. To review those complaints and the additional complaints ODI added to its evaluation which are cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
