My rear windshield on my brand new car shattered in January 2024. This caused a giant hole to form in the window and almost removed all the glass from it. I took the car into the dealership and the service technicians there determined it was caused by a manufacturing defect when they installed the windshield. They taped some garbage bags to cover it up and said that I would be on a loaner waitlist and have a rush order put on my parts. They also claimed the car is still drivable even though it is winter, and driving without a windshield is torturous, and also the bags could easily fly off and cause an accident to someone behind me. The dealership then came back and said they will not be providing a loaner and will only provide me a rental when the parts come in as they can not justify the expense of giving me a rental/ loaner beforehand. It has been a month and still no parts or other solution has been provided. The dealership and corporate office for the brand is saying that I have to drive around without a rear windshield and bags taped over it or find another solution on my own. This all seems insanely unethical and and a terrible example of customer service. They have not helped me with my safety issue of my rear windshield and are refusing to take on any expense to help me in the slightest, besides the actual repair itself whenever that may occur. It has been over a month since the windshield broke, and the parts keep getting pushed out further.

While driving, I heard a loud pop, and the rear windshield shattered completely. I had the rear defroster on. There was no sign of an object that hit the windshield, it just blew out unexpectedly. I took photos and called the insurance company, but nobody else has inspected the windshield except for me. This posed a safety risk, as I was startled and could not see out the back window. I was not able to pull over due to the lack of a safe area to pull over. There were no warnings of this event, this was the first and only incident. I did some research on this issue, and it appears that I am not the only one who has had the rear windshield shatter in my 2023 Honda HRV, due to a manufacturing defect in the seal around the rear defroster system.

[XXX] about [XXX] Mountain time, my wife was driving the vehicle back to Pueblo, Colorado from Colorado Springs, Colorado. It was a freezing drizzle and to help deal with visibility she turned on the defroster for the rear hatch window. About 15 minutes afterwards she heard a massive "boom" and looking in the rear view mirror it looked like that rear hatch window was completely cracked across the whole window. Although the situation was frightening, she was able to get home. Looking online it was clear that this situation has already been experienced by a large number of people. We reported the problem to Honda who opened a case, and directed us to a local dealer. The local dealer was rude, said that some object must have impacted the glass. We are trying to take the vehicle to a different dealer tomorrow. When I looked at the glass, there was a large section missing in the center, and there were numerous "shards" broken off along the perimeter of the glass that were independent of the large hole in the middle. At first I thought someone threw a rock, or fired a gun, on my car. Pulled car over to inspect. I was very shaken. The road had a few pine trees adjacent, I thought perhaps a large heavy pine cone could have fallen on the back windshield, but had no evidence of that happening specifically. I have read subsequently about this happening with other 2023 HR-Vs. I don’t know if I turned on the defroster that morning or not. It is possible, because it was a chilly morning. I reported it to my insurance, they covered the entire rear windshield replacement cost.

I had at first thought this was the lane assist, however I turned it off and the it was still happening. While driving on the highway it’s as if the steering wheel is making small motions left and right on its own as I am trying to keep a straight path on the road. It has not put me at any direct safety risks but it is definitely a nuisance and makes the driving experience very annoying. I have not yet taken it to a dealership to be duplicated or inspected, however I have read that there have been multiple reports made to NHTSA about this same issue. There were no warning lamps or messages associated with this issue.

Opened Apr 4, 2024 · Closed Mar 26, 2025
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Seat Belts; Seat Belts:front
On April 4, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened RQ24006 to investigate American Honda Motor Co.’s (Honda’s) proposed remedy for recall 23V-782 as well as scope of the vehicles involved. Honda issued recall 23V-782 on November 21, 2023, which concerns certain model year (MY) 2023-2024 Honda Accord, Honda Accord Hybrid, and Honda HR-V vehicles. Recall 23V-782 states that the driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioner assemblies may have been manufactured without a rivet that secures the pretensioner quick connector and wire plate. Recall documentation states that seat belt pretensioner assemblies that are missing the rivet will not properly restrain the occupant in the event of a collision, increasing the risk of injury.Subject defective seat belt assemblies are installed as original equipment for both the driver and front passenger positions for the HR-V, but only for the driver position for the Accord and Accord Hybrid. The recall remedy for 23V-782 instructs the technician to inspect both front seat belt pretensioner assemblies and, if necessary, replace them. The inspection procedure requires the technician to utilize a pull force gauge to determine whether the subject component is missing the subject rivet and requires replacement. Parts requiring replacement are determined by whether the pretensioner quick connector separates from the pretensioner assembly while the technician is pulling on the seat belt. If no separation occurs, then the part is determined to be not defective and not require replacement. There have been no reports alleging a failure of seat belt pretensioner assemblies after the inspect and replace remedy for recall 23V-782 was performed. Additionally, no comparable failures have been observed in field data for similar vehicles outside of the scope of the recall. As of the 4th quarter of 2024, the recall completion rate is at approximately 84% of the total recalled population. In view of the lack of failures after the remedy for recall 23V-782 was performed, and the lack of failures in similar vehicles outside of the scope of the recall, ODI is closing this Recall Query (RQ). The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.
