THIS PAST SUMMER, I WAS DRIVING BY MYSELF WHEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN, THE INFOTAINMENT CENTER (THE SCREEN THAT CONTROLS EVERYTHING AND IS AT THE CENTER OF IT ALL) STARTED BEEPING UNCONTROLLABLY AND THE SCREEN'S BRIGHTNESS SETTING STARTED GOING FROM FULL BRIGHTNESS TO FULL DARKNESS. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS GOING ON. I WAS TERRIFIED AND ALMOST GOT INTO A CAR ACCIDENT, REAR ENDING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I BECAME VERY DISTRACTED AND STARTLED. I WASN'T SURE IF THE CAR COMPUTER OR BATTERY WAS OVER HEATING, I WASN'T SURE IF I SHOULD PULL OVER ACROSS TWO LANES OF TRAFFIC TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY STOP...IT WAS TERRIBLE. I TRIED EVERYTHING TO GET IT TO STOP. NOTHING WOULD DO IT. LUCKILY, I WAS A FEW MINUTES AWAY FROM HOME. I PULLED INTO MY DRIVEWAY IN A PANIC AND SHUT THE CAR OFF. I TURNED IT BACK ON AND IT WAS GONE. I CHALKED THIS UP TO MAYBE A ONE TIME COMPUTER GLITCH AND LET IT GO. TWO DAYS LATER ON THE HIGHWAY, THE SAME THING HAPPENED. THIS CONTINUED MANY MORE TIMES RANDOMLY WITHOUT ANY WARNING OR EXPLANATION. I NEVER RECEIVED A NOTICE OR WARNING IN THE MAIL. I WISH MY STORY ENDED THERE, BUT IT DOESN'T. THE RANDOM OBNOXIOUS BEEPING AND FLASHING EVENTUALLY STOPPED. HOWEVER, TWO WEEKS AGO I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK AT NIGHT AND NOTICED I COULD BARELY SEE THE LINES ON THE ROAD. I ALMOST HIT A DEER. CONFUSED, I REALIZED THE BRIGHTNESS WAS TURNED ALL THE WAY UP ON THE INFOTAINMENT CENTER AND ON THE SCREEN DIRECTLY BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL. I ATTEMPTED TO TURN THE BRIGHTNESS DOWN, BUT QUICKLY REALIZED THE SCREENS WERE FROZEN ON THE HIGHEST BRIGHTNESS SETTING. EVEN WHEN I WOULD PRESS THE (-) SYMBOL TO TURN IT DOWN, IT WOULD SCALE DOWN TO THE LOWEST SETTING, YET REMAIN ON FULL BRIGHTNESS. HONDA TOLD ME THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING. TONIGHT, I ALMOST HIT A PEDESTRIAN BECAUSE I COULDN'T SEE THEM UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE. I'VE NEVER BEEN SO MORTIFIED. SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE. I HAVE VIDEOS.

THREE POTENTIALLY SERIOUS ELECTRICAL ISSUES ARE SUMMARIZED: TWICE IN THE LAST MONTH WHILE HIGHWAY DRIVING THE INSTRUMENT PANEL QUICKLY FLASHED THE FOLLOWING WARNING MESSAGES: 1) ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL (ACC) PROBLEM; 2) ROAD DEPARTURE MITIGATION SYSTEM PROBLEM; 3) COLLISION MITIGATION SYSTEM PROBLEM; 4) BRAKE SYSTEM PROBLEM. DRIVABILITY WAS NOT AFFECTED AT THE TIME, THOUGH THE MESSAGES CAUSED IMMEDIATE CONCERNS ABOUT WHAT CAUSED THESE TO APPEAR FOR NO APPARENT REASON WHILE DRIVING. WEATHER AND ROADS WERE CLEAR. I HAD TO PULL OVER AND RESTART THE VEHICLE, WHICH CLEARED THE ERROR DISPLAYS AND INSTRUMENT PANEL RETURNED TO NORMAL OPERATION. WHILE DRIVING (CITY AND HIGHWAY) THE VEHICLE BRIGHTNESS CONTROL ON THE INFO SCREEN WILL RANDOMLY START TO BEEP AND FLASH REPEATEDLY. THE SCREEN CYCLES BETWEEN DARK AND VARIOUS INFO DISPLAYS WHILE THE AUDIO SYSTEM KEEPS PLAYING. THE TOUCHSCREEN CONTROLS ON THE SCREEN ARE NON-RESPONSIVE WHEN THIS HAPPENS. STOPPING AND RESTARTING THE VEHICLE RESTORES THE DISPLAY TO NORMAL. THIS OCCURS WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION WITH NO PARTICULAR REASONS FOR THE ABNORMAL BEHAVIOR. THIS SITUATION WITH THE DISPLAY HAS REOCCURRED MORE THAN A DOZEN TIMES SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR (DEC 2017). THE MOST RECENT OCCURRENCE HAPPENED NEAR THE END OF A 600-MILE DRIVING DAY. YESTERDAY THE CAR WOULD NOT START, BATTERY ISSUE WAS DETERMINED TO BE THE LIKELY PROBLEM AFTER PLACING A SERVICE ASSIST CALL TO HONDA. A JUMP START AND PROBLEM WAS RESOLVED. MILEAGE APPROX. 19,000. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS OCCURRED SINCE OWNING THE CAR. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED WITHIN A COUPLE OF MONTHS OF OWNING THE CAR. IN BOTH INSTANCES, THE CAR HAD BEEN PARKED LESS THAN 2 HOURS. PARKING BRAKE WAS NOT SET IN EITHER CASE.

THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN FOR A SOFTWARE UPDATE BUT OF COURSE, MY VEHICLE DIDN'T NEED UPDATE, IT NEEDED A NEW BATTERY DUE TO DEAD CELL THAT HAPPENED WITHIN SIX HOURS. THE TOP SIDES OF THE BODY HAS RIPPLES DOWN BOTH SIDES. WAS TOLD THIS IS USUALLY CAUSE BY ROOF RACK (I DON'T HAVE ROOF RACK) OR BY CAR WASH (MY CAR HAS NEVER BEEN THROUGH A CAR WASH. I WON'T EVEN LET DEALER WASH IT WHEN I'M THERE). THE CAR BRAKES HARD EVEN WHEN THERE IS NO OBSTRUCTION IN FRONT OF ME. THE CRUISE, LANE ASSIST, MITIGATION WILL ALL SHUT OFF AT VARIOUS TIMES SAYING RADAR IS OFF/BLOCKED. ON 10/08/19 WHILE DRIVING, THE LCD SCREEN STARTED BEEPING, FLASHING AND GOING BLACK. NOTHING WOULD WORK. CAR IS BECOMING DANGEROUS TO BE ON ROADWAY. FILED COMPLAINT WITH HONDA ON A COUPLE ISSUES. SORRY FOR MY LUCK, IT'S NOW OUT OF WARRANTY DUE TO MILEAGE.

On February 21, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation (PE22003) to assess reports of inadvertent activation of the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), an automatic emergency braking (AEB) system, in model year 2017-2019 Honda CR-V and 2018-2019 Honda Accord vehicles.  The reports allege that activation of the AEB system occurs while driving with no apparent obstruction in the vehicle's forward path, resulting in sudden vehicle deceleration. Honda indicated that they were aware of a total of X,XXX reports that may relate to the alleged defect. Honda provided analysis of the alleged defect and alleges that some customers possibly had an inadequate understanding of the CMBS and its limitations.  However, many consumer complaints allege that Honda dealerships were unable to reproduce the condition or state that they were informed that this is considered normal CMBS operation. To date, ODI has received a total of 1,294 consumer complaints of inadvertent activation of CMBS in 2017-2022 Honda CR-V and 2018-2022 Honda Accord vehicles. A total of 31 complaints alleged a crash and 50 alleged an injury.  The Total column in the Failure Report Summary removes duplicate reports and shows the total number of reports with unique VINs from all Manufacturer, ODI, and EWR data sources.  In some cases, there were multiple reports associated with a particular vehicle in which recurring failures were alleged.  In total, there were X,XXX reports, 93 injury incidents and 47 crashes involving vehicles with unique VINs that may relate to the alleged defect. PE22-003 has been upgraded to an Engineering Analysis to further assess the scope, frequency, and potential safety related consequences of the inadvertent AEB activations. The scope has been expanded to include assessment of model year 2020-2022 Honda CR-V and Accord vehicles. To date, ODI has received a total of 1,081 consumer complaints of inadvertent activation of CMBS in the subject vehicles.  A total of 24 complaints alleged a crash and 42 alleged an injury.  The Total column in the Failure Report Summary removes duplicate reports and shows the total number of reports with unique VINs from all Manufacturer, ODI, and EWR data sources.  In some cases, there were multiple reports associated with a particular vehicle in which recurring failures were alleged.  In total, there were X,XXX reports, 84 injury incidents and 40 crashes involving vehicles with unique VINs that may relate to the alleged defect. PE22003 has been upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA24002) to further assess the scope, frequency, and potential safety related consequences of the inadvertent AEB activations.  Further the scope has been expanded to include assessment of model year 2020-2022 Honda CR-V and Accord vehicles.
