My VIN number is not included in the backup camera recall. It says the recall includes the 2017 Transit. My back up camera stopped working about a year ago. Also when the camera stopped working my cruise control stopped working also. I believe this is a larger electrical issue.

Our fleet of Ford transits are all having similar issues. This is the 2nd time this particular vehicle has lost power while driving causing extremely dangerous safety concerns. We were instructed by Ford to replace the throttle body which was done in 2021 and now the same issue is occurring. Ford needs to remedy this issue long-term. This issue is affecting the trust from my employees to provide them safe transportation, inoperable vehicles are causing lost revenue and the rest of my fleet is now unreliable causing concern for more serious accidents. This is a major issue for people that have Ford Transit fleets.

The van has to "coast" to safety. This occurs with no warning and is very sporadic. The throttle body was replaced 7/1/2021 after 109,256 miles. THE DASH DISPLAY WOULD GO COMPLETELY BLANK INTERMITTENTLY, BEGINNING WITH A CHIME AND "LOW BRAKE FLUID" WARNING. ALL GAUGES WOULD GO TO ZERO AND THERE WAS NO INFORMATION DISPLAYED AFTER A COUPLE OF SECONDS. THIS WOULD OCCUR WHILE TURNING OR ACCELERATING. WE TOOK IT TO A FORD DEALER WHO FOUND MULTIPLE COMMUNICATION FAULTS AND RECOMMENDED REPLACING THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. THIS WAS DONE WITH NO CHANGE. I FINALLY TRACED THIS DOWN TO AN UNSECURED WIRING HARNESS THAT GOES UP INSIDE THE RIGHT REAR PILLAR OF THE VEHICLE, WHICH WAS SWINGING AROUND AND SHORTING OUT THE MEDIUM SPEED CAN BUS. I SECURED THE WIRING HARNESS TOWARDS THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WITH A CABLE TIE AND THE PROBLEM HAS NOT RETURNED. BUT IT WAS VERY DISTRACTING WHILE IT HAPPENED. WE HAVE NOT HAD ANY SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH ANY OF OUR OTHER BIG TRANSITS.

Oct 25, 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Transit vehicles. This recall includes all full-size Transit vehicles previously recalled under 17V-408 except ones that received mechanical universal joint (u-joint) as a remedy and any 156" or 178" wheelbase Chassis Cab and Cut-Away bodies models. The flexible coupling connecting the transmission to the driveshaft may prematurely fail.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the coupling fails, the vehicle will not be able to move under its own power and the disconnected driveshaft may impact and damage the brake and fuel lines. Additionally, the separated driveshaft may allow the vehicle to roll if the vehicle is exited when the transmission is in 'Park' but the parking brake is not applied. These scenarios may increase the risk of a crash or injury.

Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and as an interim repair, dealers will replace the flexible coupling every 40,000 miles until the final remedy is available. The final remedy will consist of installation of a driveshaft front section equipped with a mechanical u-joint in place of the flexible coupling. These repairs will be made free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 1, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S38. Note: This recall supersedes recall number 17V-408.

NHTSA opened this audit query to determine whether Zipcar, Inc. (Zipcar) complied with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act (Safety Act). The Safety Act requires, among other things, that a rental car company not rent, lease, or sell a recalled vehicle until the safety defect or noncompliance is remedied. 49 U.S.C. § 30120(i). Based on NHTSA’s inquiry, including information provided by Zipcar, NHTSA asserted that, during 2017 and 2018, Zipcar rented certain unremedied recalled vehicles in violation of the Safety Act. In October 2023, NHTSA and Zipcar entered into a Consent Order in which Zipcar agreed to pay a total civil penalty of $300,000. The total civil penalty included a payment of $150,000 as a Non-Deferred Amount. Zipcar also agreed to a sum of $150,000 as an Abeyance Amount, to be deferred and held in abeyance pending its satisfactory completion, as reasonably determined by NHTSA, of the requirements of the Consent Order. The requirements of the Consent Order include performance obligations that relate to process improvements to Zipcar’s recall compliance procedures and its training materials. Zipcar agreed to conduct an audit of all Zipcar vehicles with an open recall within 150 days after the Effective Date of the Consent Order. Zipcar also agreed to quarterly meetings with NHTSA staff to discuss the progress of the performance obligations and issues or concerns from either party. This audit query investigation, AQ18001, is closed. Closure of this AQ has no bearing on the terms of the Consent Order, including Zipcar’s ongoing performance obligations or other legal obligations, and does not represent a determination by NHTSA about Zipcar’s performance under the Consent Order to date.
