IN ORDER TO UNLOCK ALL DOORS, INCLUDING THE TRUNK LATCH, ONE MUST LEAN ALL THE WAY IN TO PRESS THE POWER UNLOCK BUTTON. THERE IS NO WAY TO UNLOCK THE TRUNK USING A KEY. WHEN DOING THIS, THE PERSON UNLOCKING THE VEHICLE IS LEFT VULNERABLE, AND IS A HUGE SAFETY RISK, AND IS OPPOSITE ALL THE SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS PROVIDED BY POLICE AND OTHER SAFETY ORGANIZATIONS: DO NOT TURN YOUR BACK ON YOUR CHILDREN (WHEN HAVING TO LEAN IN TO UNLOCK THE BACK DOORS WHERE THE CHILDREN WILL GO) AND DO NOT LEAN INTO YOUR CAR WHERE YOU COULD BE CARJACKED. IT IS DANGEROUS, AND EITHER THE COMPANY NEEDS TO PURCHASE BACK THE VEHICLES OR FIND A WAY TO FIX THE ISSUE SO THE POWER LOCK IS ON THE DOOR (THERE ARE NO BUTTONS ON THE INSIDE OF THE DOORS, EITHER). THE ENGINEERS WERE WAY OFF ON THIS ONE.

THE VEHICLE STARTED THE PROCESS OF ACCELERATION, MOVING ME INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC, AND THEN HESITATED WHILE I WAS IN THE CROSS HAIRS OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. THIS HESITATION CONTINUED EVEN THOUGH I FULLY DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR IN AN ATTEMPT TO GET THE VEHICLE TO RESPOND. IN SHORT, I SLAMMED THE ACCELERATOR TO THE FLOOR AND THE VEHICLE DID NOT RESPOND. I AVOIDED AN ACCIDENT ONLY BECAUSE THE ONCOMING DRIVER TOOK EVASIVE ACTION.

I WAS TRYING TO MERGE ON TO THE HIGHWAY AFTER STOPPING AT A GAS STATION. THE CAR WAS UNABLE TO SHIFT GEARS AND SPEED UP. IT WAS MODERATELY TO SEVERELY SHAKING AND SHUDDERING. BECAUSE THE CAR WAS UNABLE TO SPEED UP IN TIME I WAS FORCED OFF THE ROAD BY THE ON COMING TRAFFIC ONTO THE THE SHOULDER/GRASS AREA, WITH THE OTHER CAR NEEDING TO DRIVE AROUND ME. THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE SINCE WE PURCHASED THE CAR. THE CLUTCH WAS CHANGED IN OCTOBER 2014 AS PER DEALER, BUT IN APRIL 2015 SAME ISSUES BEGAN DEVELOPING. THIS HAS BEEN THE 3RD NEAR ACCIDENT WITH THIS CAR NOT PROPERLY ACCELERATING ON TO THE HIGHWAY DUE TO THE SHIFTING ISSUE AND CAUSING A NEAR ACCIDENT. OUTSIDE THESE INCIDENTS, THE CAR IS GENERALLY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL AT LOW SPEEDS AS ITS ACCELERATION AND SHIFTING ABILITY CONTINUOUSLY CHANGES AFTER A COMPLETE STOP AT A LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. IT'S QUITE CHALLENGING TO EXPLAIN THE DIFFICULTY OF DRIVING THIS CAR BECAUSE I'VE NEVER HAD A CAR WITH SUCH A POOR CONSISTENCY DURING ACCELERATION. SOME MOMENTS IT WILL MODERATELY JERK FORWARD WITH A SLIGHT TOUCH OF THE PEDAL (ALARMING ESPECIALLY DURING STOP AND GO TRAFFIC), ANOTHER MOMENT YOU NEED TO PRESS THE GAS PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN TO ACCELERATE SLOWLY ON A FLAT/EVEN SURFACE AND OTHER TIMES IT MODERATELY-SEVERELY SHAKES AND SHUDDERS AS THE CAR TRIES TO CLIMB A MINIMAL HILL/ELEVATION (ALL THESE EVENTS HAPPEN DURING THE SAME 10-15 MINUTE DRIVE). THE CAR DRIVES "TYPICALLY/NORMALLY" APPROXIMATELY 30-35% OF THE TIME, MOSTLY AFTER ACCELERATING TO OVER 20-25 MILES PER HOUR. I AM HIGHLY CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY WHEN DRIVING IN THIS VEHICLE.

ON OCTOBER 9TH 2014, MY NEW FORD FIESTA AT 7500 MILES BEGAN SHUTTERING VIOLENTLY AT LOW SPEEDS. IT JERKED THE CAR BACKWARD WHEN TRYING TO DRIVE IN REVERSE, AND IT JERKED THE VEHICLE FORWARD WHEN TAKING OFF AT A SAFE AND NORMAL ACCELERATION FROM A RED LIGHT. IT FELT LIKE THE TRANSMISSION WAS ABOUT TO FALL OUT FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. MY MOTHER AND GIRLFRIEND WERE IN THE VEHICLE WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND THIS INCIDENT PRESENTED A GREAT SAFETY CONCERN. DUE TO BEING IN THE MILITARY, I HAD TO WAIT UNTIL THE FIRST WEEK OF DECEMBER 2014 TO TAKE MY CAR TO FORD. THEY TESTED THE VEHICLE AND SAID THAT THEY RECOGNIZED THE SHUDDER I COMPLAINED ABOUT AND THEY RESET THE COMPUTER IN THE VEHICLE. ON THE REPORT THEY SAID THE VEHICLE WAS IN FACTORY SPECS, SO AS A RESULT OF THAT REPORT, THEY DIDN'T ORDER NEW CLUTCHES AND SEALS WHICH WAS EXPLAINED TO ME THAT THOSE NEW PARTS WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. INSTEAD THEY JUST DID A TEMPORARY FIX BY RESETTING THE COMPUTER IN ORDER TO GET ME OUT THE DOOR. I PICKED UP THE CAR DECEMBER 5TH 2014 AND 6 DAYS LATER THE SHUDDER RETURNED. NOW I HAVE ANOTHER APPOINTMENT TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN TO A FORD DEALERSHIP ON MONDAY MARCH 30TH 2015 AND THE AGENT THERE SAID THAT IF THE TEST COMES BACK THAT THE CAR IS IN FACTORY SPECS THEY WONT MAKE ANY REPAIRS ON THE VEHICLE AND CALL ME TO PICK UP MY BROKEN VEHICLE. THIS WILL RESULT IN ME DRIVING A SAFETY HAZARD VEHICLE THAT I STILL OWE $17,000 ON WITH NO REPAIRS BEING DONE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I NEED HELP! PLEASE NHTSA LISTEN TO THE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS AND SAFETY CONCERNS AND MAKE FORD HAVE A RECALL FOR THESE TRANSMISSIONS. MINE AND THOUSANDS OF OTHERS LIVES COULD DEPEND ON IT. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. *TR

EA26004 · Timing Belt Failure

Opened Jul 31, 2026 · No close date supplied

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Engine; Engine And Engine Cooling:engine:gasoline:belts And Associated Pulleys

On December 18, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE25020 to investigate instances of timing belt failure in model year (MY) 2015-2017 Ford Fiesta and MY 2015-2018 Ford Focus vehicles manufactured by Ford Motor Company (Ford), equipped with a 1.0L engine and manual transmission (subject vehicles). Additionally, MY 2018-2021 Ford EcoSport and MY 2016-2018 Focus vehicles with a 1.0L engine and automatic transmission were analyzed as peer vehicles because they utilize a wet timing belt comprised of similar material as the timing belt in the subject vehicles. Through the PE, ODI investigated a potential failure/degradation of the timing belt that may affect oil pump function resulting in a lack of engine lubrication and potential loss of motive power. The complaints commonly allege a low engine oil pressure warning lamp immediately preceding a complete loss or reduction of motive power while the vehicle is in motion. Some complaints allege that a sudden loss of motive power or engine seizure occurred without warning or prior detectable symptoms. ODI’s analysis supports that this failure can occur without sufficient and advanced warning to the driver that a loss of motive power/engine seizure is imminent. ODI found that the timing belt material may degrade and create debris that clogs the mesh oil pump pick-up screen, resulting in reduced oil pressure in the engine. As additional debris accumulates on the screen, this can progress to a loss of motive power while driving due to a lack of engine lubrication. The failure data provided in response to this investigation revealed an average failure mileage of approximately 70,000 miles, and that 98% of the failures occurred prior to the 150,000 mile timing belt replacement interval per the vehicles’ maintenance schedule. Based on evidence collected via consumer surveys and an engine teardown, failures have occurred despite evidence of proper and routine oil maintenance. The oil pump pick-up screen is not serviceable, so debris accumulation cannot be inspected or manually removed without removing the engine from the vehicle. On June 2, 2026, Ford informed ODI of a non-safety customer satisfaction program for global vehicles with the 1.0L Fox Classic Timing Belt. This program will notify customers globally of a revised maintenance interval for the timing belt, reducing the original 150,000 mile interval down to 100,000 miles/6 years. This customer satisfaction program will also offer reimbursement to eligible customers who previously paid to have their engine repaired or replaced due to a timing belt related issue. Based on NHTSA’s analysis of the data, failure rates, information provided by Ford, preliminary engine teardown analysis, and precedent recalls regarding loss of engine oil pressure with the presence of driver facing warnings, ODI believes there is an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysis to perform component-level and vehicle testing. To review the reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

Therefore, this Preliminary Evaluation is being upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA26004). During this Engineering Analysis, the agency plans to perform component-level and vehicle testing. RQ19005 · Door Latch Failures

Opened Dec 19, 2019 · Closed Feb 7, 2022

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Latches/locks/linkages; Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch; Structure:body; Structure:body:door

In December 2019, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation based on 235 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging doors failed to latch when closed, and/or inadvertently opened while driving, on model year (MY) 2012-2014 Ford Fiesta, and 2013-2014 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ. Some VOQs reported the failure occurred after the latch had been remedied under a prior recall which involved fracture of the latch pawl spring tab due to thermally induced cyclic fatigue. Other VOQs alleged a similar failure in vehicles not previously recalled. A latch with a fractured pawl spring tab typically results in a ?door will not close? condition, however in certain somewhat rare circumstances, may result in the door coming open while driving. In response to ODI?s investigation, Ford has announced three field actions, as discussed below. On March 23, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-177 (Ford 20S15), a regional recall campaign to address door latch failures in vehicles not previously recalled under Safety Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210. The recall affects vehicles currently or ever registered in certain high ambient temperature states (see 20V-177 for affected states). As a remedy, Ford will replace all four door latches free of charge. On August 24, 2020, Ford issued a non-safety regional field action (Ford 20R01) to address door latch failures on the same model/MY vehicles not covered under 20V-177 (i.e., not currently/ever registered in affected states). According to Ford, spring tab failure rates for vehicles covered by this action are about half that of the 20V-177 vehicles. Under this action, dealers will replace all door latches, free of charge, if either; a) the vehicle exhibits a related latch concern, or b) if the vehicle owner expresses a concern about the latches in their vehicles. Details can be found under NHTSA TSB No. 10190990, a copy of which is available in this investigative file available at NHTSA.gov.On June 8, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-331 (Ford 20S30) addressing vehicles previously remedied under NHTSA Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210, where the repair may not have been properly completed, specifically not all of the door latches were replaced, or replaced correctly. This recall involves an inspection of the latches, with the option for a consumer self-inspection; owners could view the date codes on their latches (and confirm child safety locks are present on the rear doors) and then submit the information to Ford?s mobile app or website. A dealership inspection option was also available. Any vehicle found to have unreplaced defective latches requires the replacement of all door latches as directed by Ford.Regarding the 4,494 reports cited above, 1,485 involve scope-related failures (with 13% alleging door opening), and the remaining 3,009 reports involving remedy concerns (with 18% alleging door opening - note ODI was unable to verify the allegations of door opening). The three ODI injuries were all relatively minor. Ford?s reported injury incidences include one (unconfirmed) report of an ejection, three minor injuries with the others involving undisclosed injuries. Ford?s crashes involved two (unconfirmed) crashes alleging the incident door contacted another vehicle and three involving doors striking other property. The recalled vehicles include MY 2011-2015 Ford Fiesta, 2013-2016 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, 2015 Ford Mustang and Lincoln MKC, 2013-2015 Ford Escape and Ford C-MAX, 2012-2015 Ford Focus and 2014-2016 Ford Transit Connect.Ford's actions address ODI's concerns at this time.
