I WAS TRYING TO MERGE ON TO THE HIGHWAY AFTER STOPPING AT A GAS STATION. THE CAR WAS UNABLE TO SHIFT GEARS AND SPEED UP. IT WAS MODERATELY TO SEVERELY SHAKING AND SHUDDERING. BECAUSE THE CAR WAS UNABLE TO SPEED UP IN TIME I WAS FORCED OFF THE ROAD BY THE ON COMING TRAFFIC ONTO THE THE SHOULDER/GRASS AREA, WITH THE OTHER CAR NEEDING TO DRIVE AROUND ME. THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE SINCE WE PURCHASED THE CAR. THE CLUTCH WAS CHANGED IN OCTOBER 2014 AS PER DEALER, BUT IN APRIL 2015 SAME ISSUES BEGAN DEVELOPING. THIS HAS BEEN THE 3RD NEAR ACCIDENT WITH THIS CAR NOT PROPERLY ACCELERATING ON TO THE HIGHWAY DUE TO THE SHIFTING ISSUE AND CAUSING A NEAR ACCIDENT. OUTSIDE THESE INCIDENTS, THE CAR IS GENERALLY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL AT LOW SPEEDS AS ITS ACCELERATION AND SHIFTING ABILITY CONTINUOUSLY CHANGES AFTER A COMPLETE STOP AT A LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. IT'S QUITE CHALLENGING TO EXPLAIN THE DIFFICULTY OF DRIVING THIS CAR BECAUSE I'VE NEVER HAD A CAR WITH SUCH A POOR CONSISTENCY DURING ACCELERATION. SOME MOMENTS IT WILL MODERATELY JERK FORWARD WITH A SLIGHT TOUCH OF THE PEDAL (ALARMING ESPECIALLY DURING STOP AND GO TRAFFIC), ANOTHER MOMENT YOU NEED TO PRESS THE GAS PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN TO ACCELERATE SLOWLY ON A FLAT/EVEN SURFACE AND OTHER TIMES IT MODERATELY-SEVERELY SHAKES AND SHUDDERS AS THE CAR TRIES TO CLIMB A MINIMAL HILL/ELEVATION (ALL THESE EVENTS HAPPEN DURING THE SAME 10-15 MINUTE DRIVE). THE CAR DRIVES "TYPICALLY/NORMALLY" APPROXIMATELY 30-35% OF THE TIME, MOSTLY AFTER ACCELERATING TO OVER 20-25 MILES PER HOUR. I AM HIGHLY CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY WHEN DRIVING IN THIS VEHICLE.

A COUPLE MONTHS AFTER BUYING MY NEW CAR, I NOTICED THE TRANSMISSION WOULD START TO SHUDDER AND/OR BUCK WHEN ACCELERATING AFTER A STOP. CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND HAVE BROUGHT IT IN 3 TIMES WITH NO ONE AT THE DEALERSHIP BEING ABLE TO "RECREATE" THE PROBLEM AND THEREFORE THEY COULDN'T FIX IT. THEY ALSO SAID THAT BECAUSE OF THE TYPE OF TRANSMISSION, THE PROBLEMS I WAS DESCRIBING ARE TO BE EXPECTED. HOW COULD A COMPANY RELEASE A TRANSMISSION THAT IS "SUPPOSED" TO BUCK AND SHUDDER? PROBLEM HAS CONTINUED TO GET WORSE AND I HAVE NOW EXPERIENCED SEVERAL INCIDENTS THAT I FEEL ARE VERY DANGEROUS. ONE OCCURS WHEN I APPROACH A STOP AND I AM APPLYING THE BRAKES, THE CAR WILL REV UP AND ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN, ALMOST CAUSING ME TO GO INTO TRAFFIC. ANOTHER INCIDENT IS WHEN I AM AT A YIELD AND DON'T COME TO A COMPLETE STOP, THEN ACCELERATE TO MERGE WITH TRAFFIC, THE TRANSMISSION SKIPS/STUTTERS/SHUDDERS DELAYING MY ACCELERATION AND MAKING THE MERGE DANGEROUS. THE PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT, AND DOES NOT OCCUR AT EVERY STOP/YIELD. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE MY CAR BECAUSE I NEVER KNOW WHAT OR WHEN IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. *TR

EA26004 · Timing Belt Failure

Opened Jul 31, 2026 · No close date supplied

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Engine; Engine And Engine Cooling:engine:gasoline:belts And Associated Pulleys

On December 18, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE25020 to investigate instances of timing belt failure in model year (MY) 2015-2017 Ford Fiesta and MY 2015-2018 Ford Focus vehicles manufactured by Ford Motor Company (Ford), equipped with a 1.0L engine and manual transmission (subject vehicles). Additionally, MY 2018-2021 Ford EcoSport and MY 2016-2018 Focus vehicles with a 1.0L engine and automatic transmission were analyzed as peer vehicles because they utilize a wet timing belt comprised of similar material as the timing belt in the subject vehicles. Through the PE, ODI investigated a potential failure/degradation of the timing belt that may affect oil pump function resulting in a lack of engine lubrication and potential loss of motive power. The complaints commonly allege a low engine oil pressure warning lamp immediately preceding a complete loss or reduction of motive power while the vehicle is in motion. Some complaints allege that a sudden loss of motive power or engine seizure occurred without warning or prior detectable symptoms. ODI’s analysis supports that this failure can occur without sufficient and advanced warning to the driver that a loss of motive power/engine seizure is imminent. ODI found that the timing belt material may degrade and create debris that clogs the mesh oil pump pick-up screen, resulting in reduced oil pressure in the engine. As additional debris accumulates on the screen, this can progress to a loss of motive power while driving due to a lack of engine lubrication. The failure data provided in response to this investigation revealed an average failure mileage of approximately 70,000 miles, and that 98% of the failures occurred prior to the 150,000 mile timing belt replacement interval per the vehicles’ maintenance schedule. Based on evidence collected via consumer surveys and an engine teardown, failures have occurred despite evidence of proper and routine oil maintenance. The oil pump pick-up screen is not serviceable, so debris accumulation cannot be inspected or manually removed without removing the engine from the vehicle. On June 2, 2026, Ford informed ODI of a non-safety customer satisfaction program for global vehicles with the 1.0L Fox Classic Timing Belt. This program will notify customers globally of a revised maintenance interval for the timing belt, reducing the original 150,000 mile interval down to 100,000 miles/6 years. This customer satisfaction program will also offer reimbursement to eligible customers who previously paid to have their engine repaired or replaced due to a timing belt related issue. Based on NHTSA’s analysis of the data, failure rates, information provided by Ford, preliminary engine teardown analysis, and precedent recalls regarding loss of engine oil pressure with the presence of driver facing warnings, ODI believes there is an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysis to perform component-level and vehicle testing. To review the reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

Therefore, this Preliminary Evaluation is being upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA26004). During this Engineering Analysis, the agency plans to perform component-level and vehicle testing. In December 2019, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation based on 235 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging doors failed to latch when closed, and/or inadvertently opened while driving, on model year (MY) 2012-2014 Ford Fiesta, and 2013-2014 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ. Some VOQs reported the failure occurred after the latch had been remedied under a prior recall which involved fracture of the latch pawl spring tab due to thermally induced cyclic fatigue. Other VOQs alleged a similar failure in vehicles not previously recalled. A latch with a fractured pawl spring tab typically results in a ?door will not close? condition, however in certain somewhat rare circumstances, may result in the door coming open while driving. In response to ODI?s investigation, Ford has announced three field actions, as discussed below. On March 23, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-177 (Ford 20S15), a regional recall campaign to address door latch failures in vehicles not previously recalled under Safety Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210. The recall affects vehicles currently or ever registered in certain high ambient temperature states (see 20V-177 for affected states). As a remedy, Ford will replace all four door latches free of charge. On August 24, 2020, Ford issued a non-safety regional field action (Ford 20R01) to address door latch failures on the same model/MY vehicles not covered under 20V-177 (i.e., not currently/ever registered in affected states). According to Ford, spring tab failure rates for vehicles covered by this action are about half that of the 20V-177 vehicles. Under this action, dealers will replace all door latches, free of charge, if either; a) the vehicle exhibits a related latch concern, or b) if the vehicle owner expresses a concern about the latches in their vehicles. Details can be found under NHTSA TSB No. 10190990, a copy of which is available in this investigative file available at NHTSA.gov.On June 8, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-331 (Ford 20S30) addressing vehicles previously remedied under NHTSA Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210, where the repair may not have been properly completed, specifically not all of the door latches were replaced, or replaced correctly. This recall involves an inspection of the latches, with the option for a consumer self-inspection; owners could view the date codes on their latches (and confirm child safety locks are present on the rear doors) and then submit the information to Ford?s mobile app or website. A dealership inspection option was also available. Any vehicle found to have unreplaced defective latches requires the replacement of all door latches as directed by Ford.Regarding the 4,494 reports cited above, 1,485 involve scope-related failures (with 13% alleging door opening), and the remaining 3,009 reports involving remedy concerns (with 18% alleging door opening - note ODI was unable to verify the allegations of door opening). The three ODI injuries were all relatively minor. Ford?s reported injury incidences include one (unconfirmed) report of an ejection, three minor injuries with the others involving undisclosed injuries. Ford?s crashes involved two (unconfirmed) crashes alleging the incident door contacted another vehicle and three involving doors striking other property. The recalled vehicles include MY 2011-2015 Ford Fiesta, 2013-2016 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, 2015 Ford Mustang and Lincoln MKC, 2013-2015 Ford Escape and Ford C-MAX, 2012-2015 Ford Focus and 2014-2016 Ford Transit Connect.Ford's actions address ODI's concerns at this time. ODI will take further action if warranted by new information. The reference (OD
