MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN SHUDDERING FOR YEARS AND UNTIL EVEN THE LAST DAY THEY EXPLAINED THAT IT WAS NORMAL FOR THAT TYPE OF VEHICLE TO REACT WITH THE SHUDDERINGS BEFORE TAKING OFF. THE CHECK ENGINE LITE KEEPS COMING ON AND AFTER DRIVING FOR ABOUT A MINUTE CAR DOES NOT REVERSE AT ALL UNTIL CARS SHUT OFF. CAR RIGHT NOW IS NOT BEING DRIVEN BECAUSE ITS BEEN A SAFETY HAZARD FOR SOME TIME NOW. THIS IS MY ONLY WAY OF TRANSPORTATION. I NOW HAVE BEEN RENTING CARS WHILE I STILL PAY OFF THIS CAR TILL THIS DAY. THE FORD DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN LYING TO ME. I HOOKED UP THE COMPUTER AND GOT A LOW CLUTCH DUAL CONTROL SYSTEM ERROR. I GOT THE PART CHANGED OUT AND CAR CONTINUES TO HAVE CHECK ENGINE LITE. I USE THIS VEHICLE TO PICK UP MY DAUGHTER EVERY MONTH. FOR YEARS DRIVING THIS VEHICLE NEVER REALIZED HOW FORD HAS PUT ME AND MY DAUGHTER IN DANGER BY HAVING THESE FAULTY VEHICLES WITH MESSED UP TRANSMISSION THAT DIDN'T BELONG IN THESE TYPES OF VEHICLE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO GET FIXED ONCE AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS A RECALL AND WOULDN'T HAPPEN AGAIN AFTER THE FIX AND IT CONTINUED AFTER SOME TIME TO GO BACK TO ITS USUAL SHAKE BEFORE TAKE OFF. LIKE I SAID THE LAST TIME I WENT FOR OIL CHANGE AND FULL INSPECTION OF VEHICLE AT SCARSDALE FORD DEALERSHIP THE MECHANIC SAID HE TOOK IT OUT FOR A DRIVE AND SAW NOTHING WRONG WITH MY CAR. AFTER I DROVE IT OUT THE DEALERSHIP CAR CONTINUED TO SHAKE AND KNEW THAT HE WAS LYING. THEY JUST DONT WANT TO FIX THE PROBLEM. PLEASE HELP I OWE OVER $4000 LEFT ON PAYMENTS AND THIS CAR ISNT WORTH NOT EVEN A PENNY FOR THE DANGER IT PUT ME THROUGH EVERYTIME I TOOK THE CAR OUT FOR A DRIVE. WHENEVER MY CAR CHECK ENGINE LITE CAME ON WAS WHEN I WAS ON LOCAL ROADS AND HIGHWAY. THE CAR AS OF NOW DOES NOT REVERSE BUT WHEN DRIVEN IT ALSO DOESNT CHANGE ITS GEARS PROPERLY IT SKIPS GEAR 2 SOMETIMES AND CAR SHAKES. I LEASED THE CAR THROUGH MY BANK ON MAY 5TH 2016 WITH JUST OVER 35,000 MILES. TWO MONTHS INTO THAT THE CAR DIDN'T START AND ALL ELECTRONIC LIGHTS WERE FLICKERING. IT DISPLAYED TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTION. I TOWED THE CAR TO A BIG FORD REPAIR SHOP. THEY SAID IT NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION UPDATE AND A NEW CLUTCH. THEY TOOK CARE OF IT. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVEN (7) TIMES SINCE I GOT THE CAR MAY 2016. PRETTY MUCH EVERY FOUR MONTHS. IT IS COMPLETELY INCONVENIENT AND COSTLY. I HAVE ALSO BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE EVAP FUEL COMPONENTS. I HAVE A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON NOW AND IT NEEDS TO BE SERVICED. THE LAST TIME I GOT A TRANSMISSION UPDATE FROM FORD WAS IN MARCH 2019. MY CAR NOW BARELY HAS 66,200 MILES SO IT'S VERY DISAPPOINTING THE AMOUNT OF WORK AND TRANSMISSION ISSUES I'VE HAD TO DEAL WITH. I STILL OWE $4,800 ON THE CAR. I LEASED IT FOR $12,000. I AM HOPING I AM ABLE TO GET SOME HELP OR SOME KIND OF COMPENSATION FOR DEALING WITH THE ISSUES FOR YEARS. I TRADED IN A GOOD WORKING JEEP TO GET THIS CAR BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE GOOD ON GAS AND ECONOMICAL. THIS IS MY FIRST FORD CAR. I WILL PROBABLY NEVER BUY ANOTHER FORD CAR. I WOULDN'T WANT TO GET BURNED AGAIN. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

TAKATA RECALL MY A/C STARTED TO FAIL WITH NO WARNING. AFTER PUTTING MY CAR IN PARK, SMOKE STARTED TO RISE FROM THE ROOF AND A DARK COLOR LIQUID (PERHAPS OIL) STARTED TO LEAK FROM UNDERNEATH THE CAR. I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE FORD DEALERSHIP, AND THEY CONCLUDED THE COOLANT WAS LOW AND IT MIGHT HAVE CAUGHT CONTACT WITH THE ENGINE, CAUSING IT TO SMOKE. THIS INITIAL CONCLUSION FROM THE FORD DEALERSHIP THAN LED TO THEM CLAIMING; THE TUBES HAD A HOLE, THE FAN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AND THE BELT WAS HEAT DAMAGED. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN CASH FROM THE FORD DEALERSHIP AS USED, BUT A "FORD CERTIFIED" CAR; MEANING IT WENT THROUGH A RIGOROUS 172 POINT INSPECTION WHERE THEY EXAMINE THE CARS COOLANT, ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, BREAKS, ETC. HOWEVER, THIS IS FAR FROM THE TRUTH BECAUSE MONTHS AFTER PURCHASING MY FORD CERTIFIED VEHICLE THE TRANSMISSION BLEW OUT AND FORD HAD TO REPLACE/FIX IT FOR FREE. I'VE ONLY OWNED THE CAR FOR A YEAR AND A HALF, AND I'VE ALREADY HAVE HAD TWO MAJOR CAR PROBLEMS! I REQUESTED FOR A BUYBACK AND FORD SAYS THEY AREN'T ABLE TO DO SO. I AM FRUSTRATED THAT I PAID FOR THIS FORD CERTIFIED VEHICLE IN CASH, JUST TO BE DUPED. MY MAKE AND MODEL HAS BEEN REPORTED TO HAVE BOTH COOLANT AND TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS, I BELIEVE MY CAR HAS BOTH THESE ISSUES. IN CONCLUSION, I HAVE BEEN SOLD A VEHICLE THAT IS FALSELY ADVERTISED AND A DANGER ON THE ROAD, WITH LITTLE TO NO HELP FROM THE FORD DEALERSHIP.

EA26004 · Timing Belt Failure

Opened Jul 31, 2026 · No close date supplied

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Engine; Engine And Engine Cooling:engine:gasoline:belts And Associated Pulleys

On December 18, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE25020 to investigate instances of timing belt failure in model year (MY) 2015-2017 Ford Fiesta and MY 2015-2018 Ford Focus vehicles manufactured by Ford Motor Company (Ford), equipped with a 1.0L engine and manual transmission (subject vehicles). Additionally, MY 2018-2021 Ford EcoSport and MY 2016-2018 Focus vehicles with a 1.0L engine and automatic transmission were analyzed as peer vehicles because they utilize a wet timing belt comprised of similar material as the timing belt in the subject vehicles. Through the PE, ODI investigated a potential failure/degradation of the timing belt that may affect oil pump function resulting in a lack of engine lubrication and potential loss of motive power. The complaints commonly allege a low engine oil pressure warning lamp immediately preceding a complete loss or reduction of motive power while the vehicle is in motion. Some complaints allege that a sudden loss of motive power or engine seizure occurred without warning or prior detectable symptoms. ODI’s analysis supports that this failure can occur without sufficient and advanced warning to the driver that a loss of motive power/engine seizure is imminent. ODI found that the timing belt material may degrade and create debris that clogs the mesh oil pump pick-up screen, resulting in reduced oil pressure in the engine. As additional debris accumulates on the screen, this can progress to a loss of motive power while driving due to a lack of engine lubrication. The failure data provided in response to this investigation revealed an average failure mileage of approximately 70,000 miles, and that 98% of the failures occurred prior to the 150,000 mile timing belt replacement interval per the vehicles’ maintenance schedule. Based on evidence collected via consumer surveys and an engine teardown, failures have occurred despite evidence of proper and routine oil maintenance. The oil pump pick-up screen is not serviceable, so debris accumulation cannot be inspected or manually removed without removing the engine from the vehicle. On June 2, 2026, Ford informed ODI of a non-safety customer satisfaction program for global vehicles with the 1.0L Fox Classic Timing Belt. This program will notify customers globally of a revised maintenance interval for the timing belt, reducing the original 150,000 mile interval down to 100,000 miles/6 years. This customer satisfaction program will also offer reimbursement to eligible customers who previously paid to have their engine repaired or replaced due to a timing belt related issue. Based on NHTSA’s analysis of the data, failure rates, information provided by Ford, preliminary engine teardown analysis, and precedent recalls regarding loss of engine oil pressure with the presence of driver facing warnings, ODI believes there is an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysis to perform component-level and vehicle testing. To review the reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

Therefore, this Preliminary Evaluation is being upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA26004). During this Engineering Analysis, the agency plans to perform component-level and vehicle testing. RQ19005 · Door Latch Failures

Opened Dec 19, 2019 · Closed Feb 7, 2022

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Latches/locks/linkages; Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch; Structure:body; Structure:body:door

In December 2019, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation based on 235 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging doors failed to latch when closed, and/or inadvertently opened while driving, on model year (MY) 2012-2014 Ford Fiesta, and 2013-2014 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ. Some VOQs reported the failure occurred after the latch had been remedied under a prior recall which involved fracture of the latch pawl spring tab due to thermally induced cyclic fatigue. Other VOQs alleged a similar failure in vehicles not previously recalled. A latch with a fractured pawl spring tab typically results in a ?door will not close? condition, however in certain somewhat rare circumstances, may result in the door coming open while driving. In response to ODI?s investigation, Ford has announced three field actions, as discussed below. On March 23, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-177 (Ford 20S15), a regional recall campaign to address door latch failures in vehicles not previously recalled under Safety Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210. The recall affects vehicles currently or ever registered in certain high ambient temperature states (see 20V-177 for affected states). As a remedy, Ford will replace all four door latches free of charge. On August 24, 2020, Ford issued a non-safety regional field action (Ford 20R01) to address door latch failures on the same model/MY vehicles not covered under 20V-177 (i.e., not currently/ever registered in affected states). According to Ford, spring tab failure rates for vehicles covered by this action are about half that of the 20V-177 vehicles. Under this action, dealers will replace all door latches, free of charge, if either; a) the vehicle exhibits a related latch concern, or b) if the vehicle owner expresses a concern about the latches in their vehicles. Details can be found under NHTSA TSB No. 10190990, a copy of which is available in this investigative file available at NHTSA.gov.On June 8, 2020, Ford submitted Safety Recall 20V-331 (Ford 20S30) addressing vehicles previously remedied under NHTSA Recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 and 17V-210, where the repair may not have been properly completed, specifically not all of the door latches were replaced, or replaced correctly. This recall involves an inspection of the latches, with the option for a consumer self-inspection; owners could view the date codes on their latches (and confirm child safety locks are present on the rear doors) and then submit the information to Ford?s mobile app or website. A dealership inspection option was also available. Any vehicle found to have unreplaced defective latches requires the replacement of all door latches as directed by Ford.Regarding the 4,494 reports cited above, 1,485 involve scope-related failures (with 13% alleging door opening), and the remaining 3,009 reports involving remedy concerns (with 18% alleging door opening - note ODI was unable to verify the allegations of door opening). The three ODI injuries were all relatively minor. Ford?s reported injury incidences include one (unconfirmed) report of an ejection, three minor injuries with the others involving undisclosed injuries. Ford?s crashes involved two (unconfirmed) crashes alleging the incident door contacted another vehicle and three involving doors striking other property. The recalled vehicles include MY 2011-2015 Ford Fiesta, 2013-2016 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, 2015 Ford Mustang and Lincoln MKC, 2013-2015 Ford Escape and Ford C-MAX, 2012-2015 Ford Focus and 2014-2016 Ford Transit Connect.Ford's actions address ODI's concerns at this time. ODI will take further action if warranted by new information. The reference (OD
