Having heard rumors for some time of the dreaded DEF shut down while using our motorcoach, without a recall of the unit , we have to assume the coach is safe to use. Ours had been parked in the storage building for about 10 days. Yesterday I went to get it out. When I started the coach it immediately turned on the check engine warning. It threw 3 codes, SPN#3374, SPN#3031, & SPN#1761. I’m told the engine will derate first by 25%, next it debates by 40%, then finally to limp mode of 5 mile per hour. If this had happened the week before I would have had a wife and two dogs, in 95 degree weather with no engine, no air conditioning and about 250 miles from home. When I contacted the manufacturer I was told Parts might be available mid August to September. Fortunately I was at home. There are any number of people being left at the side of the road waiting on a tow truck. We are using what is considered a Gen 6, or a Generation #6, the replacement is to be a Gen7, which seems to have a better reliability but is currently unavailable. The codes have been emailed to the manufacturer and they have had enough experience that they know what the problem is.

While driving from Los Angeles to Phoenix on 03/07/2019, I received a series of check engine lights and warnings. These came and went , then eventually stayed on. When I got to the dealer in Phoenix, they sent me to an engine/chassis repair facility. The red stop engine light came on (with full derate to 5 mph) just as I pulled into the facility lot. (Whew!) The problem was a defective DEF head (codes 6255 derate 17 counts, 3868 def quality 59 counts, 4677 fluid level uprate 69 counts, 4572 temp uprate 69 counts). The shop had a new head overnighted from Spartan (took 3 days, actually) and repaired under warranty. I am reporting this because these heads are breaking in large numbers now, with a mandatory derate, and if it happens somewhere other than in a shop lot, Bad Things can happen. I understand that there is an investigation going on into this because of numerous failures. I am unwilling to take a long trip across the desert now because I might get stranded.

VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY. AFTER STARTING ONCE TO FILL AIR PRESSURE, TURNED OFF AND 1/2 HOUR LATER TURNED KEY TO ON AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON. THREE ERROR CODES ALL RELATING TO DEF WERE DISPLAYED. SPARTAN SENT OUT A NEW DEF HEAD AND IT WAS REPLACED. THE NEXT WEEK AFTER ABOUT 800 MILES OF DRIVING AND SEVERAL STOPS AND STARTS ONE OF THOSE THREE CODES IS NOW DISPLAYING. WAITING FOR CUMMINS TO DIAGNOSE THE CURRENT ISSUE. THE DEF ISSUE CAN LEAD TO DERATING AT ANY TIME, WHICH I HAVE NOT HAD EXPLAINED TO ME QUANTITATIVELY. THIS POSES A CONSIDERABLE SAFETY HAZARD IF RUNNING AT 65 MPH ON A CROWDED INTERSTATE AND THE COACH SLOWS DOWN TO 5 MPH.
