I HAVE HAD 6 TIRES REPLACED ON THIS VEHICLE DUE TO TIRE SEPARATION. TWO CAUSED BODY DAMAGE CHEVROET REPLACE 2 TIRES UNDER WARRANTY FOR OUT OF ROUND AT APPROX 1000 MILES. THEY ALL SEPERATED IN THE EXACT SAME PLACE, THE OUTSIDE TWO ROWS OF TREAD IS WERE IT WOULD START. FRONT OR BACK IT DIDNT MATTER. THE TRUCK WOULD DEVELOPE A VIBRATION AND I WOULD BRING IT IN AND HAVE THE TIRES CHECKED.THEY WERE AMERITRAC 550 AS 245/75R16. I HAVE WITTNESSED MANY TIRES OF THIS SIZE AND BRAND DEVELOPE THE EXACT SAME CONDITION AND MANY OF THEM WILL BLOWOUT AND DAMAGE THE VEHICLES SEVERLY. I FINALLY REPLACED ALL OF THEM WITH A DIFFERENT BRAND BECAUSE I DIDNT FEEL CONFIDENT THAT THEY WERE SAFE TO TRAVEL OUT OF TOWN ON. I RETAINED THE TIRES THAT CAME OFF WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE ONE THAT HAD SEPERATED FOR THE LAST TIME. I WORK FOR ONE OF THOUSANDS OF GM DEALERS ACROSSED THE COUNTRY AND I AM SHOCKED AT THE NUMBER OF TIRES THAT WE SEE WITH DEFECTS. MY CURRENT POSITION IS SHOPFOREMAN AND YES I AM IN CHARGE OF THE TIRE DEPARTMENT. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CHASSIS CABS. THE TAPERED HOLE IN THE DRAG LINK END THAT ATTACHES TO THE PITMAN ARM TAPERED BALL STUD MAY BE MACHINED TOO DEEP CAUSING THE HOLE TO BE OVERSIZED. A DRAG LINK WITH AN OVERSIZED HOLE MAY NOT "SEAT" THE PITMAN ARM TAPERED BALL WHEN ASSEMBLED. THIS COULD CAUSE HIGHER THAN NORMAL FRICTION BETWEEN COMPONENTS DURING OPERATION, AND POSSIBLY RESULT IN JOINT SEPARATION OR A BROKEN BALL STUD.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: IF THE JOINT SEPARATED OR THE BALL STUD BRAKE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS MOVING, STEERING CONTROL WOULD BE LOST.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE STEERING LINKAGE ASSEMBLY AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE DRAG LINK AND THE PITMAN ARM.

THE PRELIMINARY EVAULATION IS BEING UPGRADED.DURING THE EA ODI WILL LIMITITS INVESTIGATION TO ONLY THOSE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A HYDRO-BOOST SYSTEM, WHICH PROVIDES POWER ASSIST TO THE BRAKING AND STEERING SYTEMS.VACCUUM BRAKE BOOSTER VEHICLES ARE EXCLUDED.ODI HASEXPANDED THE SCOPE OF THE EA TO INCLUDE MODEL YEARS2003 AND 2004, ASDURING THE PE, ODI LEARNED THAT THE HYDROBOAST PUMPS WERE MODIFIED IN FEBRAURY 2004.THEREFORE,ODI HAS EXPANDED THE SCOPE TO INCLUDE THE ADDITIONAL MODEL YEARS.ODI'S IS CONCERNED BECAUSE THISISA SUDDEN FAILURE THAT AFFECTS TWO CRITICAL SYSTEMS OF THE VEHICLE, BRAKES AND STEERING, AT THE SAME TIME.THE ABILITY OF THE OPERATOR TO HANDLE THE DUAL FAILURES IS A CONCERN. FURTHER, THESE VEHICLES TEND TO BE WORK VEHICLES, WITH SOME OVER 10,000 POUNDS GVWR AND MANY EQUIPPED TO PULL LARGE TRAILERS.DUAL FAILURES OF HEAVILY LOADED VEHICLES AND VEHICLES PULLING TRAILERS FURTHER INCREASES THE SAFETY RISK.ODI PLANS TO CONDUCT TESTING TO QUANTIFY THE BRAKING AND STEERING PERFORMANCE DEGRADATION AND THE IMPACT ON SAFE VEHICLE CONTROL, WHEN A HYDROBOAST PUMP FAILS.
