MY ONE-MONTH-OLD 2001 WORKHORSE/CHEVROLET 18,000 GVW CHASSIS MOTORHOME HAD PARTIAL FAILURE OF ITS AUTOPARK BRAKING SYSTEM. THERE WERE VERY UNSETTLING NOISES WHILE DRIVING. MY INSPECTION REVEALED LEAKING BRAKE/TRANS FLUID. PERSONALLY PERFORMED A TEMPORARY FIX BY ATTEMPTING TO TIGHTEN FITTINGS AND CONTINUALLY TOPPING OFF QUARTS OF…

MY INSPECTION REVEALED LEAKING BRAKE/TRANS FLUID. PERSONALLY PERFORMED A TEMPORARY FIX BY ATTEMPTING TO TIGHTEN FITTINGS AND CONTINUALLY TOPPING OFF QUARTS OF ATF FLUID IN BRAKING SYSTEM UNTIL ABLE TO GET TO A REPAIR AGENCY IN ANCHORAGE, AK. NOW I HAVE COME TO REALIZE HOW LUCKY WE WERE THAT THE SYSTEM DID NOT LOCK UP AND CAUSE AN UNEXPECTED AND DANGEROUS STOP ON THE HIGHWAY. A SEAL WAS REPLACED AND THE SYSTEM HAS WORKED OK SINCE,BUT I WISH TO EXPRESS SERIOUS CONCERN OVER THE DESIGN AND DURABILITY OF THIS (MOST UNUSUAL AND UNNECESSARILY COMPLEX) "SYSTEM"! I NO LONGER DRIVE WITH THE SAME LEVEL OF CONFIDENCE IN THIS SYSTEM'S DURABILITY.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MOTOR HOME AND COMMERCIAL CHASSIS. THE REAR AXLE U-BOLTS MAY NOT BE TIGHTENED CORRECTLY DUE TO RANDOM FAILURE OF PRODUCTION TOOLING IN THE SPECIFIED TIME SPAN.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: LOW U-BOLT TORQUE CAN RESULT IN U-BOLTS COMING LOOSE AND NOT PROPERLY RETAINING THE REAR AXLE TO THE VEHICLE, RESULTING IN A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL TIGHTEN THE REAR AXLE U-BOLTS. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN OCTOBER 10, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT WORKHORSE AT 1-877-946-7731.
