On 9/17/2024 roughly at 10:00PM, while in the drive-thru picking up food, my Volkswagen ID.4 suddenly self-accelerated out of nowhere as I was slowly driving towards the window to pay for food. I was completely shocked—I’ve never experienced anything like this. I tried to react quickly, but the car surged forward and slammed into a large cement light post. The impact was hard, and the car is now severely damaged. What really shook me was that none of the safety features I’ve come to rely on worked—there was no automatic braking, late front collision warning, and despite the heavy impact, none of the airbags deployed. I ended up feeling all bruised and now have some severe mid-back pain. The thought that I could have easily been hurt more seriously, or worse, could have harmed someone else if this had happened in a crowded area, is traumatizing. This has made me completely lose trust in the vehicle’s safety systems. If the car can do this in such a low-risk situation, I can’t imagine what might happen in a more dangerous scenario. I brought up other safety concerns to Volkswagen that were completely dismissed.

The vehicle’s drive systems were also impacted resulting in the drive units/gears to lock resulting in the car becoming inoperable until the unit is replaced. Contacted VW Customer Care on October 1 for repair assistance. At this time, VW believes consumers should be burdened with the cost to repair this failed critical component which is necessary for the car to function and operate.

NHTSA Recall Number 24V344 This recall has been open with no resolution, time frame to resolution, or any communication whatsoever from VW of America for over 18 weeks now. Fortunately for me this issue has only affected my vehicle a few times (I'd estimate 5-10 instances) but the lack of followup and attention from VW is becoming very disconcerting. When we purchased this car in 2023 VW had materials advertising quarterly software updates for continuous improvement and new features. Their inability to provide a single update in ~20 months, including now when a critical fix is needed, feels like a bait and switch.

I am writing to complain that VW has not offered any assistance or solution to the electronic software failure noted in NHTSA Recall # 24V344. I have been experiencing software and electrical failures that affect the center and dashboard displays. I have no speedometer or rearview camera display, no warning systems, no cruise control, etc. Also, the car periodically locks itself and won't allow me to enter the car with the key fob, and I have to leave the window open to open the car manually. The lack of a dashboard display of speed is dangerous. I brought the car to VW dealer who reset the software and that fixed the problem for one month and then the problems returned. VW claims it is a software problem but has not offered any software updates or repairs since it was first published as a recall in May 2024. My car is too dangerous to drive when this software failure occurs--which sometimes happens while driving nd immediately affects the drivability and safe operation of the car. When it happens, nearly all the warning lights and messages start blinking and cycling while driving. We need help with putting pressure on VW to offer a solution and repair of this serious operational issue.

Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A vehicle fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
Remedy: Owners are advised to park outside immediately after charging and not leave their vehicles charging indoors overnight until the recall repair is complete. Also, owners are advised not to use Level 3 DC chargers and to limit the maximum charge of the battery to 80% until the remedy has been completed. Dealers will replace the high voltage battery cell modules as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 18, 2026. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 302, "Flammability of Interior Materials."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: In a fire, fabric that is not fire retardant may further fuel a fire, increasing the risk of injury.

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2023 ID4 rear-wheel drive vehicles. The 12-Volt battery charging cable may contact the steering column shaft and cause the cable insulation to wear, possibly resulting in a short circuit.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A short circuit may cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. A short circuit also increases the risk of a vehicle fire.
Remedy: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the remedy has been completed. Consequence: Coolant that leaks into the high-voltage system may impact safety-critical systems and warning lights, causing a loss of vehicle control or unintended air bag deployment, and increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

ODI received reports of the vehicle’s doors opening while the vehicle was in motion post recall remedy. ODI, also, received similar allegations on vehicles that were outside the scope of the recalls. Volkswagen issued recall 23V-213 on March 29, 2023, and recall 23V-213 on May 03, 2023. These recalls addressed the defect of water ingress into the circuit board assembly of the door handle. Water ingress can cause communication issues between the door handle and the door control until. This malfunction resulted in the vehicle door inadvertently opening while the vehicle was in motion. Over the course of the investigation, ODI received 17 unique VIN VOQ complaints of the vehicle doors opening while the vehicle was in motion occurring either post recall remedy or on a vehicle that was outside the recall scope. Volkswagen submitted 190 unique VIN complaints reporting the same circumstances. On September 4, 2024, Volkswagen submitted recall 24V-651 to address the issue of inadvertent opening of the door while the vehicle is in motion. The scope of this recall expands the affected vehicles to include all MY2021-2024 Volkswagen ID.4 models, including those remedied under the subject recalls. The recall remedy consists of replacement of the door handle assembly on all four doors as well as a software update. The software update is performed to update the door handle parameters. The new door handle will have the membrane relocated to the back of the handle to avoid standing water within the handle. Also, a protective coating will be on the front and back of the circuit board to avoid direct moisture formation. In view of the action being taken by Volkswagen, Recall 24V-651, ODI is closing this Recall Query. The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.
