While driving using the VW Travel Assist (lane keeping) system, the vehicle was unable to "see" the lane markings and Travel Assist disconnected. When this happens the display of the lanes changes from green to gray, but there is no warning. In the case where i was traveling about 30 MPH it took less than a second for the vehicle to steer off the road. The Adaptive Cruise Control remained engaged as the Travel Assist disengaged. Considering that VW has programmed in white and red warnings plus a sound to require the driver to control steering about every 10 seconds it seems to be minor addition to trigger those warning lights and sound if the Travel Assist disengages.

I've had to replace the 12v battery in my ID.4 due to battery failure twice since I've owned it, and according to the service department at VW, the battery was replaced on delivery too. So that's a total of three batteries since it came off the production line. I'm also having issues with my doors handles not working properly and haven't been able to have the open recall performed on my vehicle due to backordered parts. It's been more than 6 months since the issue started and I still don't have any updates. The infotainment screen randomly blanks out while driving and is especially problematic when I'm backing the car up because the backup camera cuts out and is a huge safety issue. Lastly, the windows roll down when I press up on the switch which has caused a bunch of issues when driving in snow/rain. I was told it is due to an overly sensitive pinch monitor system and that there's no fix for it. All in all, I don't feel like I can trust the car and definitely don't feel safe driving it.

The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V651000 (Structure); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10 - 20 MPH, the passenger’s side rear door unlocked and became slightly opened. The door closed from the momentum while driving; however, the contact pulled over to the side of the road and inspected the door and found no visible defects. The door was automatically locked and secured. Additionally, the infotainment screen was black while reversing and activating the back-over prevention camera. The contact also stated that the back-over prevention camera erroneously activated and remained displayed for an additional 10 - 15 minutes after the vehicle had been shifted into drive(D). The contact stated that the mileage had decreased significantly from 220 to 150 miles and the vehicle failed to display the level of charge for the battery. The dealer was contacted and was unable to provide an estimate for when parts for the recall repair would be available. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 12,800. My ID.4 was repaired to address the recall for the infotainment system rebooting (NHTSA recall number 24V344). Shortly after this repair i experienced two infotainment screen blackouts, one of which was recorded on video. These blackouts are not the system reboots that caused the recall (I experienced several of those between June and December 2024). In this case the map portion of the screen blacks out and is not responsive to any touch. this restricts use of navigation, reverse video for parking, and many other functions.

After just under 31K thousand miles of vehicle use, the rear drive motor began making a "clunking" sound upon each braking to a full stop, and again upon accelerating. The local dealer diagnosed the noise as coming from the rear electric drive motor. The technician consulted with Volkswagen "tech-line" personnel, who advised the local dealership to replace the rear drive motor under warranty, which they did approximately two weeks later. The noise no longer occurs.

Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A vehicle fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
Remedy: Owners are advised to park outside immediately after charging and not leave their vehicles charging indoors overnight until the recall repair is complete. Also, owners are advised not to use Level 3 DC chargers and to limit the maximum charge of the battery to 80% until the remedy has been completed. Dealers will replace the high voltage battery cell modules as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 18, 2026. Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A short circuit may cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. A short circuit also increases the risk of a vehicle fire.
Remedy: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the remedy has been completed. Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Coolant that leaks into the high-voltage system may impact safety-critical systems and warning lights, causing a loss of vehicle control or unintended air bag deployment, and increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

On May 16, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened Recall Query (RQ) RQ24010 to investigate the remedy and scope of recalls 23V-213 and 23V-312. The affected vehicles by these recalls included model years (MY) 2021 through 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles. ODI received reports of the vehicle’s doors opening while the vehicle was in motion post recall remedy. ODI, also, received similar allegations on vehicles that were outside the scope of the recalls. Volkswagen issued recall 23V-213 on March 29, 2023, and recall 23V-213 on May 03, 2023. These recalls addressed the defect of water ingress into the circuit board assembly of the door handle. Water ingress can cause communication issues between the door handle and the door control until. This malfunction resulted in the vehicle door inadvertently opening while the vehicle was in motion. Over the course of the investigation, ODI received 17 unique VIN VOQ complaints of the vehicle doors opening while the vehicle was in motion occurring either post recall remedy or on a vehicle that was outside the recall scope. Volkswagen submitted 190 unique VIN complaints reporting the same circumstances. On September 4, 2024, Volkswagen submitted recall 24V-651 to address the issue of inadvertent opening of the door while the vehicle is in motion. The scope of this recall expands the affected vehicles to include all MY2021-2024 Volkswagen ID.4 models, including those remedied under the subject recalls. The recall remedy consists of replacement of the door handle assembly on all four doors as well as a software update. The software update is performed to update the door handle parameters. The new door handle will have the membrane relocated to the back of the handle to avoid standing water within the handle. Also, a protective coating will be on the front and back of the circuit board to avoid direct moisture formation. In view of the action being taken by Volkswagen, Recall 24V-651, ODI is closing this Recall Query. The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.
