PARKED CAR IN DRIVEWAY TWO HOURS LATER MY NEIGHBOR TOLD ME MY LIGHTS WERE ON. LIGHT SWITCH WAS OFF COULD NOT GET LIGHTS TO GO OFF. CALLED TOW TRUCK THEY COULD NOT GET LIGHTS TO TURN OFF, SO THEY PULLED THE FUSES FOR THE LIGHTS. THREE HOURS LATER THE HORN STARTED BLOWING,,HAD TO DISCONNECT TO GET IT TO STOP. TOOK INTO TOYOTA DEALER WHERE I BOUGHT IT, A YEAR AGO. THEY SAID THEY THOUGHT IT WAS A AFTER MARKET ALARM SYSTEM THAT WAS INSTALLED PREVIOUSLY TO MY OWNERSHIP. THEY DISCONNECTED IT, THREE WEEKS LATER SAME THING STARTED HAPPENING, EXCEPT THIS TIME THE HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS WOULD NOT TURN OFF. TAKE IT BACK TO TOYOTA AND NOW THEY SAY IT IS AN INTERNAL ELECTRICAL PROBLEM THAT MAY CAUSE OTHER PROBLEMS IF NOT FIXED. AROUND $825. *TR

A DASHBOARD LIGHT CAME ON IN MY TOYOTA CAMRY, INDICATING A PROBLEM WITH THE AIRBAGS OR SEATBELTS (THE SRS WARNING LIGHT). THE SERVICE PERSON AT THE TOYOTA DEALER TOLD ME THE CAUSE OF THE WARNING LIGHT WAS A SPIRAL CABLE IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THE REPAIR COST ME $499.94. A CABLE DOES NOT HAVE MOVING PARTS LIKE A BRAKE ASSEMBLY. IN MY OPINION, A CABLE SHOULD NOT FAIL. I LEARNED THAT TOYOTA ISSUED A RECALL OF TACOMA TRUCKS BECAUSE OF THE SPIRAL CABLE. SEE THE TWO SECTIONS BELOW FROM A 3-8-12 NEWS RELEASE. HTTP://PRESSROOM.TOYOTA.COM/RELEASES/CUSTOMER+FAQS+TOYOTA+TACOMA+STEERING+WHEEL+SPIRAL+CABLE+ASSEMBLY+RECALL.HTM 2. WHAT IS THE CONDITION? DUE TO THE COMBINATION OF THE STEERING WHEEL SPIRAL CABLE DESIGN AND CHARACTERISTICS UNIQUE TO THE TACOMA CHASSIS, FRICTION BETWEEN THE SPIRAL CABLE AND THE RETAINER IN THE STEERING WHEEL SPIRAL CABLE ASSEMBLY MAY OCCUR IN SOME VEHICLES. FRICTION OVER TIME MAY RESULT IN DAMAGE TO CERTAIN CIRCUITS THAT PROVIDE CONNECTIVITY TO THE DRIVERS AIR BAG MODULE. IF CONNECTIVITY IS LOST, THE AIR BAG WARNING LAMP WILL REMAIN ILLUMINATED, AND THE DRIVERS AIR BAG MAY BECOME DEACTIVATED, PREVENTING DEPLOYMENT IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. 3. ARE THERE ANY WARNINGS THAT THIS CONDITION HAS OCCURRED? YES. THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT IS DESIGNED TO ILLUMINATE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED. IT GOES OFF AFTER ABOUT 6 SECONDS, INDICATING THE SYSTEM IS OPERATING AS DESIGNED. IF THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT REMAINS ILLUMINATED AFTER THIS PERIOD, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS AND APPROPRIATE REPAIR. I SUSPECT THE PROBLEM WITH THE TACOMA TRUCK IS ALSO A PROBLEM WITH THE CAMRY. OWNERS SHOULD NOT BE REQUIRED TO PAY THE COST OF REPAIRING A PART THAT FAILED BECAUSE OF A DESIGN FLAW. FURTHERMORE, THERE IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE, IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION, THE FAILURE OF THE STEERING WHEEL AIRBAG PUTS THE DRIVER IN DANGER.

THIS PROBLEM HAS TO DO WITH THE POWER DOOR ACTUATOR ON THE DRIVER DOOR. THE MALFUNCTION STARTED INTERMITTENTLY AT CERTAIN TEMPERATURES. THE DOOR LOCK ON DRIVER SIDE WOULD NOT WORK WHEN PRESSING THE REMOTE OR PRESSING THE POWER DOOR LOCK BUTTON ON DRIVER DOOR. AS THE PROBLEM PROGRESSED THE INTERIOR DOOR LOCK BUTTON AND LATCH STOPPED FUNCTIONING IN MANUAL MODE. NOT ALLOWING THE DRIVER TO EXIT THE VEHICLE. THE LOCK DOES NOT OPEN ANYMORE AND DOES NOT OVERRIDE THE MALFUNCTIONING DOOR ACTUATOR. AS A RESULT, SHOULD I NEED TO QUICKLY EGRESS THE VEHICLE IN AN EMERGENCY SUCH AS A FIRE OR OTHERWISE I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO SO. THE ONLY WAY TO OPEN THE DOOR AT THIS TIME IS TO PRESS THE POWER DOOR LOCK BUTTON BACK AND FORTH UNTIL SOMETHING CATCHES ON, AND THE BUTTON OPENS. HOWEVER, THIS WILL LIKELY NOT WORK IN AN EMERGENCY. I'VE REQUESTED THAT TOYOTA REPLACE THE FAULTY PART, BUT WAS INFORMED THAT GIVEN THAT THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR IT. I REQUESTED THAT THEY TAKE MY CASE TO SOUTHEASTERN TOYOTA UPPER MANAGEMENT TO MAKE A DECISION. ACCORDING TO THE TOYOTA DEALER I WAS AT, THE SERVICE MANAGER FOR THE ENTIRE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES DID NOT AGREE WITH MY COMPLAINT AND DID NOT THINK IT WAS WITHIN THEIR DUTIES TO REPLACE THE PART. MY INVESTIGATION INTO THE ISSUE HAS REVEALED THAT THIS ISSUE REPEATS WITH MANY OTHER VEHICLES OF THE SAME MODEL YEARS 02-06. SEE THE FOLLOWING LINKS: HTTP://WWW.TOYOTANATION.COM/FORUM/104-5TH-6TH-GENERATION-2002-2006-2007-2011/144851-2003-CAMRY-DOOR-LOCK-PROBLEM.HTML . IT IS APPARENT THAT THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT TOYOTA MUST BE AWARE OF AND REFUSES TO DEAL WITH GIVEN THAT NO FATALITIES HAVE BEEN REPORTED (TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE). HOWEVER, DOES SOMEONE NEED TO GET INJURED OR POSSIBLY LOSE THEIR LIFE UNTIL THIS PROBLEM IS RESOLVED BY THE MANUFACTURER? PLEASE ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. *TR

I HAVE A 2007 TOYOTA CAMRY THAT HAS INTERMITTENT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PROBLEMS. THE SPEEDOMETER AND TACHOMETER WILL CEASE TO INDICATE PROPER READINGS AND DROP TO ZERO. THE TACHOMETER WILL THEN BOUNCE BETWEEN ZERO AND WHAT I CAN ONLY ASSUME IS A CLOSE APPROXIMATION OF THE ACTUAL ENGINE RPM. AT THE SAME TIME, THE ABS AND PARKING BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATE AND STAY ON FOR THE DURATION OF THE "EPISODE". THESE LAST ANYWHERE FROM 10 SECONDS TO 10 MINUTES. IN THE MEANTIME, THE CAR RUNS NORMALLY FROM WHAT I CAN DISCERN. I CAN BE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT 70 OR SITTING IN THE PARKING LOT IDLING AND THESE EPISODES OCCUR. THERE ARE NO OTHER INDICATIONS THAT SOMETHING IS AMISS...NO ROUGH IDLING, NO ENGINE STALLING, JUST THE DISPLAY. *TR

ON AUGUST 4, 2012, I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THE THROTTLE ACTUATOR CONTROL ON MY 2004 CAMRY BROKE. MY CAR CAME TO A COMPLETE AND SUDDEN STOP, WHICH I AM VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE NOT BEEN HIT BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. I WAS NOT ABLE TO MOVE THE CAR AND MANY CARS WERE FORCED TO SWERVE AROUND ME TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. ALL OF THE LIGHTS ON MY DASHBOARD WERE FLASHING. WHEN I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND TRIED TO RESTART IT, THE ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON. I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO MOVE THE CAR AFTER APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES, BUT WAS ONLY ABLE TO DRIVE AT 10 MPH. MY MECHANIC CHECKED THE ENGINE CODE & FOUND THE PROBLEM TO BE THE THROTTLE BODY ACTUATOR CONTROL. THE PRICE FOR THE PART WAS $900, NOT INCLUDING LABOR. I PURCHASED THE CAR FROM LIA TOYOTA OF NORTHAMPTON, WHOM I HAVE CONTACTED & THEY WILL NOT ASSUME ANY RESPONSIBILITY. I HAVE ALSO CONTACTED THE TOYOTA MANUFACTURING OF NORTH AMERICA OFFICE IN KENTUCKY AND AM WAITING FOR A RESPONSE. THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AS IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. *TR

Oct 17, 2013

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Avalon, Avalon HV, Venza, Camry, and Camry HV vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the drain hose for the air conditioning condenser may become clogged causing water to accumulate at the bottom of the air conditioning condenser unit housing. The accumulated water may then leak through a seam in the housing onto the air bag control module potentially resulting in a short circuit of the module.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A short circuit may cause the air bags to become disabled or inadvertently deploy. An inadvertent airbag deployment can increase the risk of injury or the possibility of a crash. An inoperative airbag can increase the risk of injury in a severe crash. The power steering assist could also become inoperable resulting in increased steering effort and can increase the risk of a crash at low speeds.

Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will seal the air conditioning condenser unit housing and install a protective cover on the airbag control module, free of charge. The recall began on February 5, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
