THE ABS LIGHT ON MY DASH STARTED APPEARING INTERMITTENTLY IN OCTOBER; THE MECHANIC SAID THE CODES WERE INCONSISTENT AND MUST BE DIAGNOSED BY DEALER. DEALER EVALUATED IN FEBRUARY; THEY FIRST SUGGESTED IT WAS MY ABS ECU GOING BAD ($2400); UPON PRODDING, THEY SAID JUST MY REAR TIRE SENSOR MUST BE REPLACED ($600). THE INCONSISTENT ANSWER AND COST HAS DETERRED MY FROM REPLACING EITHER. INTERNET SEARCH INDICATED MANY PEOPLE HAVE SIMILAR PROBLEM AND AFTER MANY MISDIAGNOSIS, ABS ECU APPEARS TO BE CULPRIT. LAST WEEK, ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT LIT ON DASH; TACHOMETER, TEMP GAUGE AND SPEEDOMETER WENT TO ZERO. CAR DROVE AND BRAKED OK. GAUGES FLUCTUATED FROM NORMAL READINGS (AVERAGE TEMP, TACH 3000RPM, MID-LEVEL TEMP) TO ALL VALUES AT ZERO, EVEN WHEN I AM DRIVING 65MPH ACCORDING TO GPS READING. READINGS WOULD RECOVER AND FAIL CONTINUOUSLY, AND IN OTHER CASES WORKED PROPERLY FOR 30 MILES. IN SOME CASES, AC STOPPED BLOWING COLD. FURTHER INTERNET SEARCHES SUGGEST AC, DASH LIGHTS, ABS ALL POINT TO BOSCH ABS ECU. I FOUND THREE NHTSA COMPLAINTS THAT LOOK SAME/SIMILAR FOR CAMRY: 10587648, 10555094, 10521931. REPORTS FOR ABS ON OTHER CARS SOUND SIMILAR (POSSIBLY BOSCH ECU?). THE FAULT CODES POINTED TO MULTIPLE TIRE SENSORS FAILING AT ONE TIME; OTHER FAILURE CODES WERE ALSO REPORTED. THE FAULTS DID NOT POINT TO THE ECU. WHILE ABS IS NOT NECESSARY FOR DRIVING, IT IS DESIRABLE. HOWEVER, IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND A FINANCIAL BURDEN TO HAVE WRONG OR INCONCLUSIVE CODES THAT EITHER LEAD TO FIXING THE WRONG THING (TIRE SENSOR VS ECU) OR PREVENTING SAFETY INFORMATION FROM BEING PROPERLY REPORTED (0 MPH, ENGINE TEMP 0, BRAKE LIGHT ON, ETC). I HAVE NOT DECIDED TO REPLACE ECU YET, AS I AM STILL TRYING TO CONFIRM THERE IS NO OTHER POSSIBLE PROBLEM THAT WILL COST EVEN MORE THAN $2400. *TR

FORTUNATELY THE STREET IS FAIRLY LEVEL AND I WASN'T ON A HILL. I LOSS POWER TO THE BRAKE, STEERING AND EVERYTHING AS EVERYTHING WAS DEAD. I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO A CURB PUTTING ALL MY EFFORT TO STOP THE CAR. I TRIED STARTING AND MOVED ABOUT 10 FEET BEFORE EVERYTHING WENT DEAD AGAIN. I DID NOT MOVE IT FURTHER I CALLED FOR A TOW (AAA) AND THE INITIAL DIAGNOSIS WAS THAT THE ALTERNATOR WAS DEAD. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A MECHANIC WHO ALSO SAID THAT THIS ALTERNATOR WAS DEAD AND IT WAS REPLACED. I TOLD HIM WHERE IT HAPPENED AND HE SAID I WAS LUCKY THAT I WASN'T ON THE FREEWAY. *TR

MY NAME IS [XXX] AND I AM THE THIRD SECRETARY OF THE EMBASSY OF THE REPUBLIC OF TURKEY IN LIMA. I OWN A TOYOTA CAMRY LE 2007. THE SPEEDOMETER AND TACHOMETER WILL CEASE TO INDICATE PROPER READINGS AND DROP TO ZERO. THE TACHOMETER WILL THEN BOUNCE BETWEEN ZERO AND WHAT I CAN ONLY ASSUME IS A CLOSE APPROXIMATION OF THE ACTUAL ENGINE RPM. AT THE SAME TIME, THE ABS AND PARKING BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATE AND STAY ON FOR THE DURATION OF THE "EPISODE". THESE LAST ANYWHERE FROM 10 SECONDS TO 10 MINUTES. IN THE MEANTIME, THE CAR RUNS NORMALLY FROM WHAT I CAN DISCERN. I CAN BE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT 70 OR SITTING IN THE PARKING LOT IDLING AND THESE EPISODES OCCUR. THERE ARE NO OTHER INDICATIONS THAT SOMETHING IS AMISS...NO ROUGH IDLING, NO ENGINE STALLING, JUST THE DISPLAY. THIS IS A 2007 TOYOTA CAMRY, 4 CYL, 5 SPD AUTOMATIC. I HAVE INSPECTED THE TRANSAXLE INPUT AND OUTPUT SHAFT SENSORS AND THEY APPEAR TO BE IN GOOD WORKING ORDER. THERE ARE NO INDICATIONS OF OIL BUILDUP OR BROKEN/SHORTED WIRES. CONNECTIONS ALL LOOK GOOD FROM WHAT I CAN TELL. AUTHORIZED TOYOTA DEALERS IN PERU DO NOT ACCEPT TO INSPECT AND REPAIR MY CAR SINCE IT IS A US MODEL. I AM WAITING YOUR RESPONSE FOR THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM. WHEN I BROWSE THE ONLINE FORUMS. I HAVE FOUND THAT MANY PEOPLE SUFFER THE SAME PROBLEM. I AM SENDING YOU A YOUTUBE LINK THAT EXAPMLIFIES MY PROBLEM. AT NO TIME CAN I GET THE CAR TO DRIVE STRAIGHT. FURTHERMORE, THERE IS NO FEELING IN THE STEERING WHEEL. IT'S LIKE DRIVING IN A VIDEO GAME WITH ONLY VISUAL FEEDBACK.. THIS MAKES DRIVING TIRING AND DANGEROUS. IF I TAKE A SECOND TO LOOK IN THE MIRRORS, WHEN I LOOK BACK TO THE ROAD I'M EITHER DRIFTING TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT. I'VE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER AND AFTER 3 HOURS ALL THEY COULD FIND WAS THE TIRE PRESSURE BEING 2 LBS LOW AND THE TOE ALIGNMENT WAS A LITTLE OFF. THEIR CONCLUSION WAS THAT IT WAS THE ELECTRICAL POWER SYSTEM AND THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT. I SHOULD JUST GET USED TO IT. *TR

MY SPEEDOMETER WAS NOT REGISTERING ANY SPEED, EVEN THOUGH I WAS DOING ABOUT 35 MPH, AND THE BRAKE AND ABS LIGHTS WERE ON AND BRIGHT RED. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER NEXT DAY, AND I WAS TOLD THAT THE ABS ACTUATOR WAS DEFECTIVE AND IT WOULD COST ME $2492.00, PLUS LABOR TO REPLACE THE ABS ACTUATOR. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT REGULAR BRAKING WOULD WORK, BUT THE ABS WOULD NOT. I LIKE MY TOYOTA CAMRY 2008. MY PRIOR 1996 CAMRY IS STILL RUNNING WELL, AND I ALSO LIKED IT. THAT'S WHY I BOUGHT THE 2008 MODEL. WHAT I DON'T LIKE A IS A CAR WITH UNDER PERFORMING, UNSAFE, FAULTY ENGINEERED OR SUBSTANDARD PARTS, WHICH MAY LEAD TO ACCIDENTS, LOSS OF LIFE AND CUSTOMER FRUSTRATION. *TR

I GLANCED AT THE SPEEDOMETER AND SAW IT, IN ABOUT ONE SECOND, GO FROM 85 MPH TO 87 MPH AND I IMMEDIATELY BRAKED, THEREBY STOPPING THE CRUISE CONTROL (?) FROM CONTINUING TO ACCELERATE THE CAR. WHEN THIS HAPPENED, I DID NOT HAVE MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL OR MY HAND NEAR THE CRUISE CONTROL MECHANISM. THE CAR JUST SIMPLY ACCELERATED QUICKLY ON IT'S OWN. I TRIED TO CONTINUE TO USE CRUISE CONTROL TO DRIVE BACK TO MICHIGAN, HOWEVER SHORTLY THEREAFTER, IT BEGAN TO RAIN/SNOW SO I DIDN'T USE THE CRUISE CONTROL AFTER THAT. I HAD MY REAR BRAKES INSTALLED AT HOLLYWOOD TOYOTA IN OCTOBER OF 2013. AS I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP ONCE THE JOB WAS COMPLETE, MY ABS LIGHT, THE BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON, MY SPEED ODOMETER STOPPED WORKING ALONG WITH MY AC WHICH STARTED BLOWING HOT AIR. I TOOK THE CAR BACK THE FOLLOWING DAY AND GOT THE RUNAROUND. THE TOYOTA MECHANIC SAID IT WAS THE ALTERNATOR SINCE IT WAS NEW, AND IT WAS GIVING TO MUCH AMPS. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE PLACE THE ALTERNATOR WAS PUT IN. THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTED AFTER GOING BACK AND FORTH WITH THE PROBLEM. MY SERVICE TECH [XXX] SAID I WOULD HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC TEST DONE ON THE CAR. OF COURSE I GOT MAD! WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR IN I HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE. THE SUNDAY BEFORE MY LAST VISIT TO HOLLYWOOD TOYOTA, IT STARTED RAINING, WHICH CAUSED MY WINDOWS TO FOG UP INSIDE AND ME DRIVING IN A DITCH BECAUSE OF POOR VISIBILITY. NOT FROM THE OUTSIDE, BUT FROM THE INSIDE EVERYTHING BECAME FOGGING IN THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR, WHERE I EITHER HAD TO MAKE CONTACT WITH A CAR IN FRONT OF ME OR GO OFF INTO THE DITCH TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT FROM WHIPPING THE WINDOW TRYING TO SEE IN FRONT OF ME. WHEN, I SAW HOLLYWOOD TOYOTA NOT WANTING TO EXCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ACTIONS IT HAS CAUSED! I CONTACTED TOYOTA CORPORATE AND THEY IN TURN ALLOWED ME TO TAKE THE CAR IN FOR ANOTHER DIAGNOSTIC WITHOUT COST. AFTER LEAVING THE DEALERSHIP, THE PROBLEM WAS NO BETTER THEN I TOOK IT IN. BUT IN ADDITION TO ME TAKING IT IN. I WENT ONLINE AND SAW I WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO HAD PROBLEM WITH THE ABS, BRAKE LIGHT STYLE COMING ON ALONG WITH THE SPEEDOMETER NOT WORKING. AFTER DANG NEAR PULLING WHAT HAIR I HAVE LEFT OUT, I AM REACHING OUT TO YOU TO HELP ELIMINATE THIS PROBLEM BEFORE A MAJOR ACCIDENT OCCUR AND LIVES ARE LOST, BECAUSE SOMEONE ELSE WHO'S AC MAY NOT BE WORKING ON THE ACCOUNT OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FAILING WOULD BE A TRAGEDY. 13V442000 · Air Bags; Electrical System; Equipment:appliance:air Conditioner

Oct 17, 2013

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Avalon, Avalon HV, Venza, Camry, and Camry HV vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the drain hose for the air conditioning condenser may become clogged causing water to accumulate at the bottom of the air conditioning condenser unit housing. The accumulated water may then leak through a seam in the housing onto the air bag control module potentially resulting in a short circuit of the module.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A short circuit may cause the air bags to become disabled or inadvertently deploy. An inadvertent airbag deployment can increase the risk of injury or the possibility of a crash. An inoperative airbag can increase the risk of injury in a severe crash. The power steering assist could also become inoperable resulting in increased steering effort and can increase the risk of a crash at low speeds.

Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will seal the air conditioning condenser unit housing and install a protective cover on the airbag control module, free of charge. The recall began on February 5, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
