I HAVE A 1990 TOYOTA CAMRY WITH A MOTORIZED SHOULDER BELT. IN JUNE OF 1998 WITH 87,000 MILES THE SHOULDER BELT QUIT WORKING AND WAS STUCK IN THE OPEN POSITION. THIS LEAVES ONLY THE LAP BELT FOR PROTECTION. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO A DEALER AND HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA BY BOTH E-MAIL AND TELEPHONE. ACCORDING TO THE DEALER, IT APPEARED TO BE EITHER PARTS THAT WERE BROKEN IN THE DOOR, OR THE MORE PROBABLE ANSWER OF THE WIRING IN THE DOOR JAM BEING DEFECTIVE. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE CAR IS BEYOND THE WARRANTY PERIOD, HOWEVER, IT SEEMS THAT SUCH AN IMPORTANT AND BASIC SAFETY SYSTEM SHOULD NOT FAIL. *AK

THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU) FOR THE POWER DOOR LOCK SYSTEM CAN FAIL, CAUSING THE CONTACTS TO "WELD", AND RESULTING IN DOOR LOCK SOLENOID DAMAGE, WITH FAILURE OF THE DOOR TO LOCK OR UNLOCK, EVEN UNDER MANUAL OPERATION.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: IF THE DOOR FAILS TO OPEN AFTER ECU FAILURE, VEHICLEOCCUPANTS WOULD HAVE INCREASED DIFFICULTY EXITING THE VEHICLE IN AN EMERGENCY.

Remedy: INSTALL AN ADDITIONAL SUBCIRCUIT RELAY CONTROL TO PREVENT MALFUNCTION OF ORIGINAL RELAYS IN THE ECU.
