MY BRAKES FAILED THE FIRST TIME ON 1/29/14 ON MY WAY TO WORK. LUCKILY, I WASN'T GOING TOO FAST, WHICH ALLOWED ME TO SAFELY PULL OVER ONTO ONE OF THE SIDE STREETS. MY CAR DISPLAYED THE ERROR MESSAGE: "CHECK VSC SYSTEM." I CALLED AAA, AND ONE OF THEIR TOW TRUCK DRIVERS SUGGESTED THAT RATHER THAN TAKING MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, I USE A DIFFERENT PLACE (WHICH HE CLAIMED WAS AAA APPROVED; IT WASN'T). NEARLY $500 LATER ($472.94 TO BE EXACT), MY CAR SEEMED FINE FOR ABOUT A MONTH. THEN ON 2/26/14, THIS TIME WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, MY BRAKES FAILED AGAIN. I GOT THE SAME MESSAGE AS BEFORE: "CHECK VSC SYSTEM." THIS TIME, I ASKED TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. SUPPOSEDLY, NOBODY AT THE DEALERSHIP WAS AWARE OF A RECALL FOR THIS SYSTEMATIC PROBLEM. HOWEVER, I HAVE SINCE FOUND OUT THAT 59 OTHER COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED FOR THIS VERY ISSUE. THAT'S ONLY THROUGH JANUARY; I CAN IMAGINE HOW MANY OTHER TIMES THIS HAPPENED THAT WERE NOT REPORTED. I ATE THE COST (THIS TIME UPWARDS OF $3,800) TO HAVE THE ENTIRE VEHICLE SUSPENSION CONTROL (VSC) UNIT COMPLETELY REPLACED. THIS MORNING, 4/21/14, I TURNED ON MY CAR & WAS GREETED WITH THAT OLD FAMILIAR MESSAGE: "CHECK VSC SYSTEM." I'M AFRAID TO TRY DRIVING MY CAR TO WORK IN THIS CONDITION, AND MEANWHILE I'VE SUNK OVER $4,000 INTO "REPAIRS" THAT DO NOT SEEM TO LAST. I ALWAYS THOUGHT TOYOTAS WERE SUCH GOOD, RELIABLE CARS. HOWEVER, I'M NOT SURE IF I WOULD BUY ANOTHER ONE AT THIS RATE. MY CAR HAS LESS THAN 100K MILES AND I'M EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS HEADACHE. DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO DIE BEFORE TOYOTA ACTUALLY STEPS UP & ISSUES A RECALL?? *TR

I HAD SEVERAL INCIDENTS FOR MY CAMRY HYBRID IN THE PAST YEARS WHICH ARE RELATED TO SAFETY 1) ON 11/28/10, WHILE DRIVING IN RAINY SITUATION ON LOCAL STREET AT LOW SPEED, THE DRIVER SIDE WIPER STOPPED WORKING CAUSING BAD VISIBILITY. I PULL OVER TO STREET SIDE AND RAIN STOPPED AFTER A WHILE. I DROVE THE CAR TO A NEARBY TOYOTA DEALER. DIAGNOSIS IS "WIPER ARM SLIPPED SPLINES" 2) ON 4/16/10, WHILE DRIVING ON STREET AT LOW SPEED (30 MPH) HEAVY SMOKE CAME OUT OF DRIVER SIDE WINDOW SWITCH. AFTER I PULLED OVER AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE, THE SMOKE STOPPED. CAR WAS TOWED TO A NEARBY TOYOTA DEALER AND DIAGNOSTIC WAS SWITCH LOCKED ON "ON" POSITION. I BELIEVE THIS IS ONE OF THE TOYOTA "RECALL" CASE. 3) ABOUT 11/2013, WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAY THE TIRE AIR PRESSURE LIGHT WENT ON. I DROVE BACK TO TOYOTA DEALER AND WAS TOLD IT WAS BECAUSE OF COLD WEATHER. NO FIX WAS PERFORMED. HOWEVER,THE LIGHT WENT ON / OFF SINCE THEN AND AFTER A MONTH STAYED ON ALL THE TIME. BROUGHT THE CAR TO DEALER AGAIN AND THEY FOUND A FAULTY SENSOR FOR TIRE AIR PRESSURE. LUCKILY ALL INCIDENTS DID NOT INVOLVE CRASH / INJURY. HOWEVER, I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED / CONCERNED ON MY CAR'S SAFETY / RELIABILITY. IF YOU NEED FURTHER INFORMATION, I CAN BE REACHED AT [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

THE BRAKE ACTUATOR ON THESE CAMRY AND CAMRY HYBRID MODELS IS A COMPLAINT OF THOUSANDS OF THESE MODELS OF TOYOTAS. WHEN TAKEN TO A DEALER, THEY WANT APPROXIMATELY $4000 TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM ($2800 FOR THE PART AND $1200 FOR LABOR) AND AT 3 SEPARATE DEALERSHIPS THE UNDERTONE COMMENT FROM THE SERVICE WRITER IS THAT TOYOTA SHOULD RECALL THESE CARS AND REPLACE THIS PART BUT UNTIL SOMEONE IS KILLED IN THE CAR FROM THE BRAKES FAILING, NOTHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN; IT IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN. WHY ISN'T TOYOTA DEMANDED TO MAKE A RECALL ON A PART THAT IS DEFECTIVE IN THOUSANDS OF THE CAMRY AND HYBRID CAMRY MODELS? THERE ARE MASSIVE COMPLAINTS RECORDED VIA COMPUTER AND MAYBE PEOPLE DON'T KNOW WHO TO APPROPRIATELY ADDRESS THIS ISSUE TO. HOPEFULLY NHTSA.GOV WILL TAKE AN HUMAN INTEREST WITH REGARDS TO VEHICLE SAFETY AND DEMAND THAT TOYOTA RECALL THESE CARS AND REPLACE THIS PART AT THEIR COST. WITH SO MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS BRAKE ACTUATOR PROBLEM, THERE HAS TO BE A SERIES OF DEFECTIVE PARTS THAT WERE INSTALLED IN THESE CAMRY AND CAMRY HYBRID MODELS. WHEN QUESTIONED ABOUT A DEFECTIVE PART, TOYOTA JUST SHRUGS THEIR SHOULDERS. IT IS FRUSTRATING AND IT IS NOW INVOLVING MY FAMILY AND ESPECIALLY MY CHILDREN AT RISK OF DEATH DEFYING TRAVEL. I REALLY APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE OR HELP NHTSA CAN PROVIDE TO MAKE TOYOTA ADMIT GUILT OF A DEFECTIVE BRAKE ACTUATOR. I WILL GUESS THAT IT REALLY WILL TAKE A SERIES OF DEATHS OR MUTILATING ACCIDENTS TO GET TOYOTA OFF THE BENCH. I AM TRULY CONCERNED AND NOT MANY PEOPLE CAN AFFORD A $4,000 REPAIR. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND CONSIDERATION. *TR

MY CAR WAS PARKED OUTDOORS IN THE RAIN. THE INSIDE OF THE CAR WINDOWS WERE DRIPPING WITH MOISTURE. WHEN I DECIDED TO GO TO FOR A DRIVE, I REACHED BEHIND MY SEAT TO THE REAR FLOOR FOR MY PAPER TOWEL ROLL AND CLOTH TOWELS TO WIPE OFF THE WINDOWS AND THEY WERE SOAKED WITH WATER. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER SHIP TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE FOUR SUNROOF DRAINS HAD NO HOSE CLAMPS ON THEM THE RIGHT REAR HOSE HAD COME LOOSE CAUSING A FLOOD IN MY REAR SEAT AREA. I HAD TO HAVE ALL CARPETS REPLACED AND HOSE CLAMPS ADDED TO PREVENT ANY FURTHER DAMAGE. IT COST $2467.57 TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE BECAUSE TOYOTA DID NOT REQUIRE HOSE CLAMPS ON THE 4 DRAIN HOSES FROM THE SUNROOF. I ASKED TOYOTA IF THEY WERE GOING TO NOTIFY OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS OF THE POTENTIAL PROBLEM AND THEY INDICATED AN ANSWER OF, NO! I THINK THEY SHOULD BE FORCED TO LET OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS OF THE POTENTIAL PROBLEM. I HAVE ALL OF THE COMMUNICATIONS WITH TOYOTA IF YOU WANT COPIES. THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS INSURANCE RATES ARE SO HIGH. MY INSURANCE PAID FOR ALL EXCEPT $60.52 OF THE TOTAL COST OF REPAIRS. I HAVE AAA INSURANCE. PLEASE RESPOND!!! *TR

I TOOK THE CAR TO SANTA MONICA TOYOTA, WHERE I HAD ORIGINALLY PURCHASED IT, AND WAS TOLD THAT THE BRAKE ACTUATOR SYSTEM WAS LEAKING AND THE REPAIR COST WAS $3800, NO ONE THERE INFORMED ME THAT THIS PARTICULAR PART WAS BEING INVESTIGATED FOR POSSIBLE DEFECTS. AFTER THE CAR WAS LOOKED AT SANTA MONICA TOYOTA, THE BRAKES STARTED CLUCKING AND GRABBING. AFTER MUCH HEATED DISCUSSION, CORPORATE TOYOTA AGREED TO PAY $1000 TOWARD THE REPAIR WHICH WAS DONE AT MARINA DEL REY TOYOTA. I BELIEVE THAT THE SYSTEM IS DEFECTIVE. NO SYSTEM SHOULD FAIL IN SO MANY CARS OF THE SAME MODEL AND YEAR. TOYOTA SHOULD RECALL THE SYSTEM AND COMPENSATE MYSELF AND OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS. *TR

12V491000 · Visibility:power Window Devices And Controls

Oct 10, 2012

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 Camry, Camry Hybrid, RAV4, Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Tundra, Sequoia, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Yaris, Scion xB, Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe vehicles. The power window master switch assemblies in some of these vehicles were built using a less precise process for lubricating the internal components of the switch assemblies. Irregularities in this lubrication process may cause the power window master switch assemblies to malfunction and overheat.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the switch overheats, it may melt, possibly resulting in a fire.

Remedy: Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will inspect the switch and apply a special grease that inhibits heat build up or replace any switch damaged by the defect, free of charge. Toyota owners that experience a problem with a switch should not attempt to make repairs, but should contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331. General Motors will contact the Pontiac Vibe owners affected by this recall and GM dealers will inspect and repair switches as necessary. Those owners may contact Pontiac Customer Care at 1-800-762-2737.

09V388000 · Vehicle Speed Control:accelerator Pedal

Oct 5, 2009

TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAN GET STUCK IN THE WIDE OPEN POSITION DUE TO ITS BEING TRAPPED BY AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A STUCK OPEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN VERY HIGH VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

Remedy: TOYOTA FILED AN AMENDED DEFECT REPORT ON NOVEMBER 25, 2009, STATING THAT DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND, ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, ALTER THE SHAPE OF THE FLOOR SURFACE UNDER THE PEDAL. THESE CHANGES ADDRESS THE RISK OF PEDAL ENTRAPMENT DUE TO INTERFERENCE WITH THE FLOOR MAT. REDESIGNED ACCELERATOR PEDALS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE BEGINNING IN APRIL 2010 AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY MODIFIED PEDAL WITH THE NEW PEDAL IF DESIRED. ALSO, DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY GENUINE TOYOTA OR LEXUS ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MATS WITH REDESIGNED ALL-WEATHER MATS, OR REPURCHASE THE PREVIOUS MATS FROM OWNERS WHO DO NOT WANT THE NEW ONES. ADDITIONALLY, SOFTWARE MODIFICATIONS WILL BE INSTALLED ON CAMRY, AVALON AND LEXUS ES 350, IS 350 AND IS 250 MODELS THAT WILL ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE OVERRIDES THE ACCELERATOR IN THE EVENT BOTH BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS ARE APPLIED. TOYOTA WILL BEGIN MAILING LETTERS TO OWNERS ON DECEMBER 31, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331, LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.

On June 25, 2014, Toyota initiated a Warranty Enhancement Program (ZE1) to extend warranty coverage for the brake actuator assembly and skid control ECU/brake pedal stroke sensor in certain MY 2007 to 2011 Toyota Camry hybrid vehicles. Toyota's program covers repairs related to two conditions:internal malfunctions of the Brake Actuator assembly; and overly sensitive monitoring logic for the Brake Pedal Stroke Sensor.Primary coverage provides warranty enhancement until November 30, 2015, with no mileage limitation. After the primary coverage period ends, secondary coverage is provided for 10 years or 150,000 miles from the date of first use, whichever occurs first. In addition, on July 10, 2014, Toyota initiated Limited Service Campaign E0U to replace the Brake Reservoir Tank in MY 2007 through 2011 Toyota Camry hybrid vehicles. The LSC will be available until June 30, 2017, and will only be available at an authorized Toyota dealer.ODI's analysis of failure data determined that the majority of records were related to the Brake Actuator condition, which appeared to be the causal component in 734 complaints/field reports and 864 warranty claims. The Brake Pedal Stroke Sensor (80 reports/189 claims) and Brake Reservoir Tank (91 reports/44 claims) conditions were identified in far fewer records.Analysis of the failure data indicate that each condition provides warning prior to any reduction in power assisted braking, with less than 10 percent of all reports and claims involving diagnostic codes or complaint narratives indicating increased braking effort or reduced brake effectiveness. In addition, most of the incidents in which reduced braking assist appears to have occurred involved operation in a reduced assist mode and not a sudden, complete loss of power assisted braking.ODI assessed reduced assist mode in a subjective driving evaluation which indicated that the brake system provided normal and harddeceleration capability with reasonable increases in pedal effort.Less than one percent of reports and claims analyzed by ODI included evidence indicating a complete loss of power assisted braking occurred and this mode requires operation for a significant period of time with multiple audible and visual warnings.Repair expense was cited in many of the complaints reviewed by ODI, especially those related to the Brake Actuator, which had repair costs exceeding $3,000 according to some complaints.High repair cost appears to have been a factor in the only crash identified by ODI for the fault conditions identified by Toyota, which involved a Brake Actuator failure that was diagnosed but the owner declined repair approximately eight months prior to the reported crash incident. This preliminary evaluation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding that a safety-related defect does not exist. For additional information regarding this investigation, including analysis of the Brake Actuator, Brake Pedal Stroke Sensor, and Brake Reservoir Tank fault conditions and failure experience, see Attachment A to this closing resume.
