THE FRONT ELECTRICAL PORT WAS BEING USED BY AN MP3 PLAYER FM TRANSMITTER WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS OFF. THE FM TRANSMITTER TURNED OFF, AND AFTER THE CAR WAS LEFT ALONE FOR A FEW MINUTES, SMOKE WAS COMING OUT FROM THE VEHICLE AND IT SMELLED OF BURNT PLASTIC. FM TRANSMITTER WAS REMOVED AND THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE WAS DISCONNECTED. THE SOURCE OF SMOKE WAS THE REAR TRUNK FUSE BLOCK WHICH HAD MELTED AROUND THE SITE OF THE FRONT ELECTRIC PORT FUSE. ONCE SMOKE CLEARED, NEGATIVE CABLE WAS REATTACHED. AFTER A COUPLE MINUTES OF CHECKING CAR ELECTRICAL FROM DRIVERS SEAT, THE FUSE BLOCK WAS CHECKED AND A SMALL FIRE HAD STARTED. THIS WAS QUICKLY PUT OUT AND NEGATIVE CABLE TO BATTERY DISCONNECTED AGAIN. ANY REMAINING METAL BITS FROM ELECTRIC PORT FUSE WERE REMOVED AND ONCE THE NEGATIVE CABLE WAS AGAIN REATTACHED, NO MORE SMOKE APPEARED. HOWEVER, PARK LAMPS WOULD NOT TURN OFF, CAR DID NOT KNOW TRUNK WAS CLOSED, THE LEFT REAR TURN SIGNAL DID NOT WORK (EVEN THOUGH IT LIT UP WHEN PARK LAMPS WERE LEFT ON). OTHER RANDOM BUTTONS ON DRIVER CONTROL PANEL DID NOT WORK (REAR DEFROST, BUT FUSE WAS FINE). *TR

WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD I CAME TO A STOP WHEN TRAFFIC AHEAD OF ME BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN. I WAS AT A DEAD STOP WHEN A CAR CAME SLIDING PAST ME IN THE GRAVEL TO THE RIGHT OF ME. WHEN WE GOT TO THE STOP SIGN THE DRIVER OF THAT VEHICLE INFORMED ME THAT MY BRAKE LIGHTS WERE INOPERATIVE. I FOUND THIS HARD TO BELIEVE CONSIDERING I HAD JUST PURCHASED THE VEHICLE A MONTH PRIOR. ABOUT A WEEK LATER I HAD A CAR HONK AT ME AND YELL OVER TO ME THAT I HAD NO BRAKE LIGHTS WHEN COMING TO A STOP. WHEN YOU START THE CAR, YOU CAN WALK AROUND THE BACK OF THE CAR AND SEE THAT THE BRAKE LIGHTS ARE ON, WITH NOBODY EVEN IN THE CAR. I HAVE FOLLOWED MY GIRLFRIEND WHILE SHE WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND THEY FUNCTION THE EXACT OPPOSITE WAY THAT THEY SHOULD, THE BRAKE LIGHTS ARE ON THE WHOLE TIME YOU ARE DRIVING AND WHEN COMING TO A STOP THE LIGHTS GO OUT COMPLETELY AND DO NOT RETURN ON UNTIL YOU BEGIN ACCELERATING AGAIN. I HAVE HAD THE BRAKE PEDAL POSITION SENSOR REPLACED, CALIBRATED AND IT DID CURE THE PROBLEM FOR A MONTH OR SO, THEN THE PROBLEM RETURNED. NEXT I HAD THE "FIX" FOR THE BCM CONNECTOR PERFORMED, THE DIELECTRIC GREASE DID NOTHING. SO NOW THE PROBLEM REMAINS, EVERYDAY PEOPLE RIDE RIGHT ON MY BUMPER AND I FEAR THAT AN ACCIDENT CAN COME OF THIS, AND GM NEEDS TO FIND A FIX FOR THIS AND RECALL THESE VEHICLES ASAP. *TR

THE MAN INFORMED ME THAT MY BRAKE LIGHTS WERE ON WHILE I WAS DRIVING BUT TURNED OFF WHEN I WENT TO BRAKE FOR THE RED LIGHT. I TOOK MY CAR TO BE FIXED AT A SHOP NEAR MY HOME, HE REPLACED THE SENSOR IN THE BRAKE PEDAL. WHEN I LEFT HIS SHOP IT WORKED PERFECTLY FINE. WORKING FINE ONLY LAST ABOUT 8 MONTHS WHEN I NOTICED THE REFLECTION OF MY BRAKE LIGHTS IN TRAFFIC SIGNS WHEN I WASN'T PUSHING ON THE BRAKE I REALIZED I ONCE AGAIN WAS HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. SINCE I HAVE LEFT THAT FIRST SHOP IN 2010, I HAVE TAKEN MY G6 TO 2 DIFFERENT SHOPS WITHIN THE LAST 3 YEARS PAYING UPWARDS OF $500.00 TO GET THE SAME ISSUE RESOLVED EACH TIME. THE LAST TIME I TOOK MY CAR TO THE GMC DEALERSHIP (2 WEEKS AGO); THEY INFORMED ME THAT I HAVE BEEN THERE IN JUNE OF 2011, SEPTEMBER OF 2012 AND NOW JUNE OF 2013. THE HEAD TECHNICIAN TOLD ME HE "HAS NO IDEA WHAT THE ISSUE IS". HE UNPLUGGED EVERYTHING AND PLUGGED IT ALL BACK IN AND THEY WORKED FINE BUT THE ISSUE IS OBVIOUSLY NOT RESOLVED. *TR

WHILE DRIVING MY 2007 PONTIAC G6 GT SEDAN I HAD SOMEONE FLAG MY ATTENTION. HE SAID THAT MY BRAKE LIGHTS WERE ON WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND SHUT OFF WHEN I WAS ACTUALLY BRAKING AT A STOP LIGHT. ALSO, THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NO LONGER IN OPERATION DURING THIS PERIOD OF TIME. I HAD THE BRAKE SWITCH REPLACED ON MY CAR. THE PROBLEM STILL OCCURRED AT RANDOM. I HAVE ALSO BEEN STUCK IN A FEW PARKING LOTS NOT BEING ABLE TO SHIFT MY CAR OUT OF PARK. I HAD TO RE START MY CAR SEVERAL TIMES AND WAIT FOR A PROLONGED PERIOD BEFORE THE CAR WAS ABLE TO SHIFT TO REVERSE SO I COULD LEAVE. I WAS ALONE IN THE DARK ON A SNOWY NIGHT FOR 30 MINUTES IN A DESERTED PARKING LOT THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED. THE BRAKE LIGHT MALFUNCTION COMES AND GOES THROUGHOUT THE YEARS SUBSIDING FOR A SHORT PERIODS OF TIME BUT THEN RETURNS AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT. THIS SPRING, THE PROBLEM HAS RETURNED NON-STOP AND I HAVE AGAIN, BEEN FLAGGED DOWN BY 3 OTHER DRIVERS TO INFORM ME OF MY BRAKE LIGHTS BEING ON WHILE DRIVING AND GOING OFF WHEN ACTUALLY BRAKING. I HAVE ALSO BEEN FOLLOWED TOO CLOSE BY MANY DRIVERS AND CUT OFF IN TRAFFIC SEVERAL TIMES. THE PROBLEM WITH THE REAR BRAKE LIGHTS GOING ON AND OFF AT THE WRONG TIMES HAS BEEN CAUSING THIS TYPE OF ROAD RAGE TO BE AIMED AT ME AND I FEEL IT IS PUTTING ME AND MY PASSENGERS IN DANGER. IN ADDITION, I AM UNABLE TO USE MY CRUISE CONTROL ON THE CAR DUE TO THE REAR BRAKE LIGHTS MALFUNCTION. I FEEL THIS PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE LIGHTS IS SERIOUSLY DANGEROUS AND COULD EASILY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT BY SENDING THE WRONG SIGNALS TO DRIVERS WHO ARE DRIVING BEHIND THIS VEHICLE. *TR

MY 2007 PONTIAC G6 HAS REPEATING BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATING ISSUES. FOR ALMOST TWO YEARS THE VEHICLES BRAKE LIGHTS ILLUMINATE WHILE BRAKE IS NOT APPLIED. THE BRAKE LIGHTS ARE ON DRIVING AT ALL SPEEDS AND ACTUALLY STOP ILLUMINATING WHEN BRAKE IS APPLIED. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING CONSISTENTLY IN WARM AND COLD WEATHER, RAINY AND DRY WEATHER. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL GM DEALERSHIP HERE IN CINCINNATI, OH AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULD NOT GET THE PROBLEM TO REPEAT ITSELF AND THEREFORE COULD NOT DIAGNOSE THE VEHICLES ISSUE. I AM EXTREMELY CONCERNED FOR MY FAMILY'S SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHER DRIVERS ON THE ROAD. NOT ONLY HAVE I EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM BUT A HANDFUL OF TIMES I HAVE ALSO SEEN OTHER 2007 G6 ON LOCAL ROADWAYS WITH ILLUMINATING BRAKE LIGHTS DURING ACCELERATION. AGAIN I AM EXTREMELY CONCERNED AND HOPE THAT WITH YOUR HELP GM WILL RECOGNIZE THIS ISSUE AND ATTEMPT TO PROVIDE ME AS A OWNER THE STEPS TO ENSURE SAFETY. THANK YOU *TR

I HAVE READ MANY OTHER POSTS AND BLOGS ABOUT SAID PROBLEM AND I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT GM AND THE NHTSA HAVE NOT DONE SOMETHING FOR MODELS NEWER THAN THE 2005 G6. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET KILLED BECAUSE OF THIS FAULTY SYSTEM. I WANT THESE PROBLEMS FIXED BEFORE SOMEONE GETS SERIOUSLY HURT BECAUSE OF THE COMPANY'S NEGLIGENCE. *TR

THEY APPEAR TO BE WORKING OPPOSITE THAN INTENDED. ALSO, CRUISE CONTROL DISENGAGES INTERMITTENTLY AND CANNOT BE RESET UNTIL AFTER THE CAR IS TURNED OFF AND STARTED AGAIN. I HAVE REPLACED THE WIRING HARNESS FOR BOTH HEADLAMPS BECAUSE THE CONNECTORS OVERHEATED AND CAUSED HEADLAMPS TO FAIL. THE BRAKE LIGHT MAY CAUSE ME TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT AND WILL MOST CERTAINLY CAUSE ME TO FAIL THE STATE INSPECTION. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY A FURTHER RECALL HAS NOT BEEN ISSUED OTHER THAN THE 2005 MODELS. OBVIOUSLY THE PROBLEM IS ACROSS THE ENTIRE PRODUCT LINE OF G6'S. *TR

15V064000 · Steering:electric Power Assist System

Feb 4, 2015

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured April 1, 2006, to June 30, 2006, and 2006-2007 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured April 18, 2006, to June 30, 2006. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly, free of charge. The recall began February 24, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14772. Note: This is an expansion of recall 14V-153 to cover additional vehicles built between April 1, 2006 and June 30, 2006.

May 14, 2014

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and the BAS and harness connector, and will relearn the brake pedal home position, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed an Interim letter to customers on July 14, 2014. The recall began on August 18, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). GM's number for this recall is 13036.

Apr 30, 2014

General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on April 29, 2014, that they are recalling 56,214 model year 2007 and 2008 Saturn Aura vehicles. On May 22, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 1,074,899 model year 2004-2008 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured from May 16, 2003, through October 5, 2007, model year 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured from June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, and model year 2005-2008 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured from May 26, 2004, through September 28, 2007, and equipped with 4-speed transmissions. The total number vehicles being recalled is now 1,131,113.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the transmission shift cable fractures while the vehicle is being driven, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, despite selecting the ‘PARK’ position, the transmission may not be in ‘PARK.’ If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.

Remedy: GM will notify owners, and GM dealers will replace the shift cable assembly and mounting bracket, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 14152.

Mar 30, 2007

CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 208, 'OCCUPANT CRASH PROTECTION.' THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER SEATS IN THESE VEHICLES ARE BUILT WITH A PASSENGER AIR BAG SENSING SYSTEM. WHEN TESTED WITH A REPRESENTATIVE, UNRESTRAINED SIX YEAR OLD CHILD, THE SYSTEM IS REQUIRED TO TURN OFF THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER'S AIRBAG. INTERFERENCE DURING SYSTEM CALIBRATION CAUSED THE SEATS TO BE OUT OF SPECIFICATION.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: THIS CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO A CHILD SEAT OCCUPANT DURING CERTAIN CRASH CONDITIONS.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL WILL BEGIN ON APRIL 17, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668.

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Exterior Lighting; Exterior Lighting:brake Lights; Exterior Lighting:tail Lights

On May 14, 2014 General Motors (GM) announced a recall action (14V-252) involving model year (MY) 2004-12 Chevrolet Malibu, MY 2004-07 Malibu Maxx, MY 2005-10 Pontiac G6 and MY 2007-10 Saturn Aura vehicles. An increased resistance can develop in the Body Control Module connection systems and result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS, or brake light switch) circuit that can cause the brake lamps to malfunction. As a result, and according to GM, the brake lamps may illuminate when pedal application is not being applied or may not illuminate when pedal force is applied.Additionally, the cruise control may not engage or if it is engaged it may require increased pedal travel to disengage.Pedal application may not be required to move the shift lever out of PARK or additional travel may be required to move the shift lever out of PARK. Traction control, electronic stability control (ESC) and panic brake assist features may also become disabled. These failure conditions may increase the risk of a crash. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Engineering Analysis EA13-005 on June 6, 2013 to further investigate complaints alleging that the brake lights did not operate properly on MY 2005-08 Pontiac G6 vehicles. The BAS in these vehicles produces a single analog voltage output proportional to the brake pedal's position. The BAS signal is used by various systems to determine both pedal position and rate of displacement, so a failure or inaccuracy of the signal may affect multiple systems.ODI also received similar complaints on MY 2009 Pontiac G6, MY 2004-11 Chevrolet Malibu and MY 2007-09 Saturn Aura vehicles that use the same BAS.All of these above models were included in the subject vehicle population of ODI's Information Request (IR) letter to GM.Prior to the recall announcement date, ODI received 855 reports of brake light malfunction resulting in one or several of the failure conditions.Eight (8) of the reports alleged crashes, with 1 resulting in an injury. Of these crash allegations, 2 were roll-away incidents, in which the shift interlock was moved out of PARK without pedal application and the vehicle rolled into another object.Three (3) crashes involved rear-end hits, which were believed to be due to brake light reversal.ESC/Traction Control failures were the alleged cause of 2 incidents, which resulted in unresponsive brake application and in 1 case caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. One (1) crash allegation was not counted as the circumstances of the crash were not related to any of the failure modes.ODI notes that it is difficult to determine the actual cause of incidents where brake light reversal or ESC/Traction Control failures were the alleged cause. In response to ODI's IR, GM submitted 2,268 unique reports that related to brake lamp malfunction. Combined with the data submitted during Recall Query 13-001, a total of 4,664 unique complaints were submitted.Twelve (12) of the GM reports alleged a crash, with 2 reporting minor injuries and 4 alleging property damage.Of the 12 reports, 3 involved brake light reversal allegations, 4 involved roll-away incidents and 2 involved ESC/Traction Control malfunctions. ODI did not include three (3) reports that involved allegations inconsistent with the alleged defect. This investigation is closed on the basis of GM's announcement of safety recall 14V-252.The ODI complaints cited above can be reviewed at: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID, see the attached list for ODI numbers.
