I WENT TO AUTO ZONE AND PURCHASED POWER STEERING FLUID AND I WAS ABLE TO ADD SOME TO THE SYSTEM. THREE DAYS LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENED, LUCKILY I WAS DRIVING ON A STREET WHERE I COULD PULL OVER. I CAME HOME AND CALLED PONTIAC IN SAN DIEGO, CA. AND WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALER TO COMPLAIN TO THE PONTIAC HEADQUARTERS. I CONTACTED THE HEADQUARTERS AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. IN LAST 5 WEEKS THE POWER STEERING HAS GONE OUT A TOTAL OF FIVE TIMES AND I ALMOST WRECKED TWICE. I LIVE PART TIME IN THE USA AND PART TIME IN MEXICO. THE LAST TIME I CONTACTED PONTIAC THEY SAID WHEN I RETURNED THE USA TO CONTACT THEM. ALL I AM GETTING IS A RUN AROUND WITH NO ANSWERS. I TOLD THEM THE CAR WAS DANGEROUS..THEIR EMAILS TO ME ARE VERY NEGATIVE AND I AM TOTALLY UNHAPPY WITH THEIR RESPONSE. *TR

MY POWER STEERING KEEPS FAILING ON MY 2005 PONTIAC G6. I HAVE TWO SMALL CHILDREN AND IT IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM. I AM NOW AFRAID TO HAVE MY KIDS IN THE CAR. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED IT WAS IN MY PARKING LOT. THE SECOND TIME I WAS TURNING IN TRAFFIC. THANK GOD THERE WAS NOT A CAR COMING THE OTHER WAY. I HAD TO THROW MY WHOLE BODY AGAINST THE WHEEL TO GET IT TO TURN. AND YES MY CHILDREN WERE IN THE CAR AT THE TIME. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THIS HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED. BOTH TIMES THIS HAPPENED THE SERVICE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE SCREEN FLASHED POWER STEERING. MY STEERING IMMEDIATELY WENT OUT. I AM NOW GOING TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT AT A SHOP. *TR

THIS MORNING I WAS ON MY DRIVING TO WORK AND AS I WAS PULLING ON TO THE HIGHWAY, MY POWER STEERING LOCKED UP AND I COULD NOT TURN MY WHEEL VERY WELL! BECAUSE, I WAS ALREADY TURNING, I WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BEFORE ANY CARS WERE TO COME. AT THAT POINT, I WAS UNABLE TO TURN MY WHEEL NOR DID I FEEL COMFORTABLE GOING ANY FURTHER ON THE HIGHWAY. I THEN CALLED A PERSON AND GOT MY CAR TO MY LOCAL MECHANICAL SHOP WHERE IT CURRENTLY IS NOW. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE IN THIS CAR AND DON'T FEEL THAT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY IS PROPER. I THINK IT SHOULD BE A FULL ON RECALL FOR THE POWER STEERING. OBVIOUSLY, GM KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM WHICH IS THE REASON FOR THE EXTENDED WARRANTY BUT TO NOT HAVE IT AS A FULL WARRANTY IS LUDICROUS. THE FACT THAT PEOPLE'S LIVES ARE AT RISK AND THIS HAS HAPPENED TO MANY PEOPLE IS NONSENSE NOT TO HAVE A FULL RECALL. I HAVE DONE RESEARCH ON THIS ISSUE AND IT IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. I'M NOT SURE HOW MANY COMPLAINTS IS NEEDED BEFORE IT IS CORRECTED BUT I WOULD SURE HOPE IT WOULD NOT TAKE A HORRIFIC ACCIDENT FOR THIS TO OCCUR. I HAVE 111000 MILES ON MY CAR 11,000 OVER THE CRITERIA AND VERY UPSET IS NOT BEING TAKEN CARE OF BY GM. THIS IS VERY DISAPPOINTING AND NOT TO MENTION AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, DANGEROUS! THANK GOODNESS I'VE BEEN DRIVING FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND KNEW WHAT TO DO BUT THERE ARE TOO MANY YOUNG KIDS OUT THERE THAT DRIVE THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE THAT ARE NOT EXPERIENCED DRIVERS AND WILL GET HURT BECAUSE A MAJOR FUNCTION OF THE VEHICLE GOES OUT AND NO FAULT TO ANYONE EXCEPT THE AUTOMOTIVE COMPANY MAKING THE VEHICLES. I WOULD HAVE THE GM PEOPLE/ NHTSA PEOPLE WHO MAKE THE CALL TO RECALL TO THINK ABOUT THEIR OWN CHILDREN OR FAMILY AND HOW THEY WOULD FEEL IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO THEM BECAUSE THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT AT A CRUCIAL TIME AND HAD NO CONTROL OVER THE VEHICLE. AGAIN, VERY DISAPPOINTING NOT ONLY TO GM BUT TO THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY SAFETY FOR NOT DEEMING THIS AS A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND HAVING RECALL SENT OUT. *TR

I WAS ALREADY TURNED ENOUGH TO MAKE IT INTO THE GATE WITHOUT RAMMING INTO IT, AND MANAGED TO PARK. I CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD AND ALL SEEMED TO BE FINE. THERE ARE MANY OTHER G6 OWNERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND HAVE HAD SERIOUS CRASHES. THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED.

THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED THEN THE LIGHT ONLY CAME ON. SO I FINISHED MY SHIFT AT WORK AND THEN DROVE TO AUTO ZONE TO BUY FLUID. ON MY WAY THERE, THE WHEEL LOCKED UP AND I WAS DRIVING ON A BUSY HIGHWAY, UNABLE TO TURN OFF OF IT. FINALLY I PUT MY CAR IN NEUTRAL, TURNED IT OFF, THEN TURNED IT BACK ON. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT TO BUY FLUID BUT THE POWER STEER IS ELECTRIC IN G6'S. I WAS TOLD THAT MY ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND I'M NO LONGER UNDER THE WARRANTY BY MY DEALERSHIP. I'VE BEEN RESEARCHING DIFFERENT SITES ONLINE AND MANY, MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH THEIR G6'S. THIS IS A SERIOUS AND VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM CONSIDERING THE STEERING WHEEL OF THE CAR LOCKS COMPLETELY AND WILL NOT TURN WHILE DRIVING IT. I DON'T HAVE $700+ TO GET THIS ISSUE FIXED AND I REFUSE TO PAY FOR AN ISSUE ON MY CAR THAT IS CLEARLY THE MANUFACTURER'S MISHAP CONSIDERING MANY, MANY PEOPLE HAVE FAULTY POWER STEERING. THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED BEFORE PONTIAC IS THE NEW TOYOTA AND BEGIN CAUSING DEATHS BECAUSE OF IT'S FAULTY VEHICLES. *TR

615V064000 · Steering:electric Power Assist System
Feb 4, 2015
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured April 1, 2006, to June 30, 2006, and 2006-2007 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured April 18, 2006, to June 30, 2006. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly, free of charge. The recall began February 24, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14772. Note: This is an expansion of recall 14V-153 to cover additional vehicles built between April 1, 2006 and June 30, 2006.

May 14, 2014
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and the BAS and harness connector, and will relearn the brake pedal home position, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed an Interim letter to customers on July 14, 2014. The recall began on August 18, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). GM's number for this recall is 13036.

14V224000 · Power Train:automatic Transmission; Power Train:automatic Transmission:lever And Linkage:floor Shift
Apr 30, 2014
General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on April 29, 2014, that they are recalling 56,214 model year 2007 and 2008 Saturn Aura vehicles. On May 22, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 1,074,899 model year 2004-2008 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured from May 16, 2003, through October 5, 2007, model year 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured from June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, and model year 2005-2008 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured from May 26, 2004, through September 28, 2007, and equipped with 4-speed transmissions. The total number vehicles being recalled is now 1,131,113.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the transmission shift cable fractures while the vehicle is being driven, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear and the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash. Furthermore, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, despite selecting the PARK position, the transmission may not be in PARK. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and GM dealers will replace the shift cable assembly and mounting bracket, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 14152.

GM IS RECALLING 8,012 MY 2005-2006 PONTIAC G6 VEHICLES. THE BRAKE LAMPS MAY NOT OPERATE PROPERLY BECAUSE OF CORROSION IN A WIRING CONNECTOR. CORROSION IN THE CONNECTOR COULD CAUSE THE BRAKE LAMPS TO ILLUMINATE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL HAS NOT BEEN DEPRESSED, OR THE LAMPS MAY NOT ILLUMINATE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED. IN ADDITION, THE CRUISE CONTROL MAY NOT ENGAGE, AND GREATER BRAKE PEDAL FORCE MAY BE REQUIRED TO SHIFT THE VEHICLE OUT OF PARK.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: BRAKE LAMPS THAT ARE NOT OPERATING PROPERLY MAY NOT WARN A DRIVER IN A FOLLOWING VEHICLE OF THE BRAKING STATUS AND COULD LEAD TO A CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL APPLY A DIELECTRIC LUBRICANT TO THE CONNECTOR TO PREVENT CORROSION. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FOR YOU FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 17, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PONTIAC AT 1- 800-620-7668 OR OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

Oct 31, 2006
CERTAIN VEHICLES ORIGINALLY BUILT WITH CLOTH SEATS THAT WERE EQUIPPED WITH AN AUTOMATIC AIR BAG PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM AND LATER REUPHOLSTERED WITH AFTERMARKET LEATHER SEAT COVER KITS ARE INVOLVED. TESTING HAS INDICATED THAT THE AFTERMARKET LEATHER SEAT COVERS CAN CAUSE THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM TO MALFUNCTION.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: IF THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS, THE FRONT AIR BAG ON THE PASSENGER SIDE MAY BE DISABLED WHEN IT SHOULD BE ENABLED, OR ENABLED WHEN IT SHOULD BE DISABLED. IN EITHER CASE, IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH THAT REQUIRES AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, A FRONT PASSENGER'S LEVEL OF INJURY MAY BE INCREASED.
Remedy: BECAUSE A REPLACEMENT LEATHER SEAT COVER THAT IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM IS NOT AVAILABLE, GENERAL MOTORS (GM) WILL REPURCHASE THESE VEHICLES IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TERMS STATED IN GM'S LETTER TO OWNERS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 6, 2006. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT GM AT 1-877-477-1022 TO BEGIN THE PROCESS OF REPURCHASING THEIR VEHICLE.

On May 14, 2014 General Motors (GM) announced a recall action (14V-252) involving model year (MY) 2004-12 Chevrolet Malibu, MY 2004-07 Malibu Maxx, MY 2005-10 Pontiac G6 and MY 2007-10 Saturn Aura vehicles. An increased resistance can develop in the Body Control Module connection systems and result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS, or brake light switch) circuit that can cause the brake lamps to malfunction. As a result, and according to GM, the brake lamps may illuminate when pedal application is not being applied or may not illuminate when pedal force is applied.Additionally, the cruise control may not engage or if it is engaged it may require increased pedal travel to disengage.Pedal application may not be required to move the shift lever out of PARK or additional travel may be required to move the shift lever out of PARK. Traction control, electronic stability control (ESC) and panic brake assist features may also become disabled. These failure conditions may increase the risk of a crash. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Engineering Analysis EA13-005 on June 6, 2013 to further investigate complaints alleging that the brake lights did not operate properly on MY 2005-08 Pontiac G6 vehicles. The BAS in these vehicles produces a single analog voltage output proportional to the brake pedal's position. The BAS signal is used by various systems to determine both pedal position and rate of displacement, so a failure or inaccuracy of the signal may affect multiple systems.ODI also received similar complaints on MY 2009 Pontiac G6, MY 2004-11 Chevrolet Malibu and MY 2007-09 Saturn Aura vehicles that use the same BAS.All of these above models were included in the subject vehicle population of ODI's Information Request (IR) letter to GM.Prior to the recall announcement date, ODI received 855 reports of brake light malfunction resulting in one or several of the failure conditions.Eight (8) of the reports alleged crashes, with 1 resulting in an injury. Of these crash allegations, 2 were roll-away incidents, in which the shift interlock was moved out of PARK without pedal application and the vehicle rolled into another object.Three (3) crashes involved rear-end hits, which were believed to be due to brake light reversal.ESC/Traction Control failures were the alleged cause of 2 incidents, which resulted in unresponsive brake application and in 1 case caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. One (1) crash allegation was not counted as the circumstances of the crash were not related to any of the failure modes.ODI notes that it is difficult to determine the actual cause of incidents where brake light reversal or ESC/Traction Control failures were the alleged cause. In response to ODI's IR, GM submitted 2,268 unique reports that related to brake lamp malfunction. Combined with the data submitted during Recall Query 13-001, a total of 4,664 unique complaints were submitted.Twelve (12) of the GM reports alleged a crash, with 2 reporting minor injuries and 4 alleging property damage.Of the 12 reports, 3 involved brake light reversal allegations, 4 involved roll-away incidents and 2 involved ESC/Traction Control malfunctions. ODI did not include three (3) reports that involved allegations inconsistent with the alleged defect. This investigation is closed on the basis of GM's announcement of safety recall 14V-252.The ODI complaints cited above can be reviewed at: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID, see the attached list for ODI numbers.

PE07023 · Loss Of Power Steering Assist
Opened Apr 25, 2007 · Closed Sep 25, 2007
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Steering:electric Power Assist System
DURING THIS INVESTIGATION, GENERAL MOTORS (GM) INDICATED THAT APPROXIMATELY 15,600 MODEL YEAR (MY) 2005 PONTIAC G6 VEHICLES BUILT FROM NOVEMBER 3, 2004 THROUGH JANUARY 5, 2005 MAY EXPERIENCE A LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST DUE TO AN INSUFFICIENT CRIMP AT THE TORQUE AND POSITION SENSOR TRANSDUCER LOCATED IN THE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY. GM HAS INDICATED THAT IT PLANS TO SEND LETTERS TO THE OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES TO INFORM THEM THAT IT WILL EXTEND THE WARRANTY COVERAGE FOR THE EPS SYSTEM IN THEIR VEHICLES TO 7 YEARS OR 70,000 MILES.STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF THE FAILURES IN THE POPULATION AFFECTED BY THE WIRING CRIMP PROBLEM INDICATE THAT THE PROBLEM IS AN EARLY LIFE FAILURE THAT SHOULD OCCUR WITHIN THE TERMS OF THE EXTENDED COVERAGE.GM'S INVESTIGATION OF EPS FAILURES IN THE SUBJECT VEHICLES IDENTIFIED A PROBLEM WITH THE CONNECTOR CRIMPS DURING THE TWO MONTH PRODUCTION RANGE COVERED BY THE WARRANTY EXTENSION.DURING THIS PERIOD THE CRIMPS MAY BE ASYMMETRICAL, RESULTING ININADEQUATE PRESSURE ON THE WIRE THAT CAN LEAD TO ELECTRICAL NOISE IN THE SIGNAL FROM THE SENSOR TO THE CONTROLLER.THE CONTROLLER MAY INTERPRET THIS ELECTRICAL NOISE AS A MALFUNCTION OF THE SYSTEM AND DEFAULT TO MANUAL MODE (I.E., TURN OFF THE EPS SYSTEM).IF THE POWER STEERING ASSIST IS LOST, THE DRIVER INFORMATION CENTER (DIC) DISPLAYS A POWER STEERING WARNING MESSAGE, A CHIME IS SOUNDED, ANDTHE SERVICE VEHICLE SOON LIGHT WILL ILLUMINATE.IN MANUAL MODE THE STEERING REQUIRES INCREASED EFFORT, ESPECIALLY AT SPEEDS LESS THAN 20 MILES PER HOUR (MPH).ODI'S ANALYSIS OF THE FAILURE DATA SHOW THAT APPROXIMATELY 30 PERCENT OF THE COMPLAINTS AND FIELD REPORTS (569 OF 1913) INVOLVE VEHICLES BUILT IN THE RANGE COVERED BY GM'S EXTENDED POLICY, WHICH ACCOUNT FOR ONLY ABOUT 7 PERCENT OF THE SUBJECT VEHICLE POPULATION.THE COMPLAINT RATE FOR THE NON-PEAK MONTHS IS RELATIVELY HIGH, AT 673 PER 100,000 VEHICLES.THE RATE FOR THE PEAK MONTHS IS 5 TIMES HIGHER AT 3,645 PER 100,000 VEHICLES.SIMILAR DIFFERENCES ARE EVIDENT IN THE WARRANTY DATA, WITH APPROXIMATELY 27 PERCENT OF THE EPS WARRANTY CLAIMS (1120 OF 4145) INVOLVING VEHICLES BUILT IN THE PEAK MONTHS.THE WARRANTY RATE FOR THE NON-PEAK MONTHS IS 1.5% AND THE RATE FOR THE PEAK MONTHS IS 7.2%.ODI IDENTIFIED 9 CRASHES THAT ARE POTENTIALLY RELATED TO EPS SYSTEM FAILURE IN THE SUBJECT VEHICLES.THE CRASHES OCCURRED AT LOW SPEEDS, SUCH AS DRIVEWAY AND PARKING LOT TYPE MANEUVERS.THE CRASHES RESULTED IN ONE ALLEGED INJURY, BUT ODI WAS UNABLE TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ABOUT THE TYPE OR SEVERITY OF THE INJURY.NONE OF THE CRASHES INVOLVE VEHICLES BUILT IN THE TWO MONTH PERIOD COVERED BY GM'S EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERAGE.THE SUBJECT VEHICLES USE THE SAME EPS SYSTEM AS THE MY 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU VEHICLES INVESTIGATED BY ODI IN EA04-018.ALTHOUGH THE FAILURE RATES ARE HIGH IN THIS INVESTIGATION, PARTICULARLY FOR THE PEAK MONTHS, THEY ARE SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER THAN FOR THE MALIBU VEHICLES INVESTIGATED IN EA04-018.AS IN THOSE VEHICLES, THE EFFECTS ON STEERING EFFORT ARE SMALL AT SPEEDS GREATER THAN 15-20 MPH.ACCORDINGLY, THIS INVESTIGATION IS CLOSED. THE CLOSING OF THIS INVESTIGATION DOES NOT CONSTITUTE A FINDING BY NHTSA THAT A SAFETY-RELATED DEFECT DOES NOT EXIST. THE AGENCY WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR COMPLAINTS AND INFORMATION RELATING TO THE ALLEGED DEFECT IN THE SUBJECT VEHICLES AND TAKE FURTHER ACTION IN THE FUTURE IF WARRANTED.
