THE TRANSMISSION HAD A CATASTROPHIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE AFTER 25 MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP AND 82,000 MILES. CAR IS UNDRIVEABLE. MY TOW TRUCK DRIVER SAID HE SEES THIS ALL THE TIME WITH NISSAN'S CVT TRANSMISSION FAILURES. NISSAN DECLINED TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE WITH THE COST OF REPAIRS BECAUSE MY CAR WAS 22,000 MILES PAST THE LIMITED POWERTRAIN WARRANTY, AND BECAUSE THIS YEAR SENTRA IS NOT PART OF ANY CURRENT TRANSMISSION RECALL. IT IS MY HOPE TO CALL ATTENTION TO A PRODUCT THAT MIGHT NEED TO BE RECALLED, AS IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLES. CONSUMERS WHO BUY NISSAN SENTRAS ARE OFTEN BUDGET-MINDED, AND A REPAIR THAT EXCEEDS $4,000 IS NOT EXPECTED AT 2 YEARS OF OWNERSHIP, NOR SHOULD IT BE.

THESE ISSUES SHOULD NOT BE THIS PREVALENT IN SUCH NEW CARS.

MY TRANSMISSION HAS GONE OUT TWICE SINCE I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN JUNE 2015. IN OCTOBER 2015, MY CAR WOULDN'T ACCELERATE. I TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP IN WHICH THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS ELECTRICAL WIRING FROM MY TAIL LIGHTS TO MY BRAKE. 3 MONTHS LATER, MY CAR HAS THE SAME SYMPTOMS. I TAKE IT TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AGAIN AND THEY TELL ME THAT IT'S THE TRANSMISSION AND EVENTUALLY, AFTER SEVERAL WEEKS OF CONVERSING BACK AND FORTH, THEY FINALLY AGREE TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION AFTER MY CAR WON'T SHIFT OUT OF FIRST GEAR ON MY WAY HOME FROM SCHOOL, AROUND 10 PM, ON THE BYPASS GOING ABOUT 35MPH ALL BY MYSELF. IT TOOK APPROXIMATELY A MONTH FOR THE CAR TO START BEING SYMPTOMATIC, YET AGAIN. I TAKE IT BACK AND DROP IT OFF FOR ABOUT 3 DAYS. THEY CAN'T FIND THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM WITHOUT A SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT ON SO THEY TELL ME THERE'S NOTHING TO DO AND THEY SEND IT BACK TO ME. THIS HAPPENS A FEW TIMES WITHIN A COUPLE OF MONTHS. SEVERAL WEEKS GO BY WITH THE CAR STILL BEING SYMPTOMATIC AND NOT SHIFTING GEARS CORRECTLY. THE CAR KEEPS JUMPING AND WON'T DRIVE CORRECTLY SO I FINALLY TAKE IT BACK TO NISSAN, AFTER CALLING ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND THEM TELLING ME THAT NOTHING CAN BE DONE UNTIL THEY SEE A SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT ON THE CAR FOR IT TO THROW A CODE. TODAY, OCTOBER 3, 2016, I TAKE IT BACK TO COLUMBUS NISSAN AND ABOUT HALFWAY THERE, IT WON'T SHIFT. IT THEN WONT ACCELERATE ONCE I OFF OF THE BYPASS SO I HAD TO LITERALLY ROLL INTO THE PARKING LOT OF THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP. THEY THEN TELL ME THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING REALLY BECAUSE THE SERVICE LIGHT ISN'T ON AND THE SERVICE MEN ARE AT LUNCH. TIFFANY, AN EMPLOYEE OF COLUMBUS NISSAN, OFFERS ME A RIDE BACK TO MY APARTMENT AND TO LEAVE ME CAR THERE FOR THEM TO LOOK AT IT AFTER LUNCH. THEY LATER CALL ME AND TELL ME IT'S MY TRANSMISSION OUT YET AGAIN. THEY'RE WAITING TO HEAR BACK FROM THE NISSAN USA BUSINESS.

MY 2014 NISSAN SENTRA HAS ISSUES WITH ACCELERATION. AT VARIOUS TIMES EVEN WITH THE ACCELERATOR FULL PUSHED DOWN, THE CAR WILL NOT ACCELERATE AND WILL EVENTUALLY SLOW TO UNDER 20 MPH EVEN ON A FLAT SURFACE. NISSAN HAS REPAIRED THE ISSUE ONCE, BUT NOW WILL NOT RESPOND TO MY CORRESPONDENCE IN REGARDS TO THE ISSUE, NOW THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND IS HAVING THE SAME ISSUE, I HAVE LESS THAN 45K ON THE CAR. IN ADDITION, THE TAILS LIGHTS ARE RETAINING MOISTURE, I HAVE READ THAT THIS MAY BE CAUSING A SHORT IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND MAY BE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR AND IT IS NOW PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES AND THE PROBLEM STILL REMAINS UNRESOLVED. MILEAGE AT THE FIRST INCIDENT IS APPROXIMATE, BUT IT DID HAPPEN LESS THAN A YEAR AFTER PURCHASING THE CAR NEW.

NEXT DAY WAS FOGGY SO NOT USING CRUISE CONTROL. VEHICLE SLOWED DOWN AGAIN FROM 60 MPH DOWN TO ABOUT 45 MPH. ALSO GOT NO RESPONSE WHEN DEPRESSING GAS PEDAL. THIS TIME THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD CAME ON. DROVE HOME AFTER WORK WITHOUT INCIDENT. I HAD GOTTEN THE OIL CHANGED THE DAY BEFORE THE FIRST INCIDENT HAPPENED. I HAD NO PREVIOUS PROBLEMS PRIOR TO THAT. THE ISSUE SEEMS TO HAVE RESOLVED ITSELF AS THE CAR IS RUNNING FINE NOW. IF IT OCCURS AGAIN, I'LL HAVE IT CHECKED OUT.

SHE JUMPED BACK IN THE SEAT AND ATTEMPTED TO STOP THE CAR BUT STATES " THE BRAKES WOULDN'T WORK". THE CAR WAS OFF AND THE KEYS WERE IN HER HAND. THE CAR ROLLED ALMOST 100 FEET BEFORE HER STILL-OPEN DRIVER'S DOOR HIT A PARKED SUV WHICH STOPPED THE CAR BEFORE IT ROLLED OUT INTO THE STREET. THE DOOR WAS BENT COMPLETELY BACKWARDS AND HAS TO BE REPLACED. THE CAR IS UNDRIVEABLE UNTIL I CAN GET IT REPAIRED. I WILL ADD THAT I BOUGHT THE CAR 1 MONTH AGO WITH 6651 MILES ON IT. CARFAX REPORTED A MINOR REAR END ACCIDENT THAT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE WARY OF! *TR

17V253000 · Air Bags

Apr 13, 2017

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2015-2017 LEAF and 2014, 2016 and 2017 Sentra vehicles. Due to a manufacturing error within the air bag inflators, the passenger frontal air bag may not properly deploy in the event of a crash.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: In the event of a crash, if the front passenger air bag doesn't deploy properly, it can increase the risk of injury to passengers.

Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began June 7, 2017. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

16V242000 · Air Bags:sensor:occupant Classification

Apr 26, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2016 Sentra vehicles manufactured June 4, 2012, to April 9, 2016. The front passenger seat belt bracket may become deformed if it is used to secure a Child Restraint System (CRS). The deformed seat bracket may cause the Occupant Classification System (OCS) to incorrectly classify the installed CRS, resulting in the front passenger air bag to not be turned off as designed when a CRS is in the seat.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the frontal passenger air bag deploys in the event of a crash when a child seat is installed in the front passenger seat, there will be an increased risk of injury to the child in the CRS.

Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will reinforce the seat belt bracket as well as reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU), free of charge. The recall began on June 13, 2016. Owners are warned not to install a CRS in the front seat. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669.

16V244000 · Air Bags:sensor:occupant Classification

Apr 26, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, and Pathfinder, 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, and Q50 Hybrid, 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue and Infiniti Q50, 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Murano Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the passenger frontal air bag does not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, the passenger is at an increased risk of injury.

Remedy: Nissan will notify their owners. Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in LEAF, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pathfinder, Infiniti Q50, JX35, and QX60 and Chevrolet City Express vehicles, free of charge. Interim notices were sent to owners on May 31, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669, Infiniti customer service at 1-888-833-3216 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

Oct 20, 2015

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Altima and Pathfinder vehicles, 2013-2014 Nissan Sentra vehicles, 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles, 2014-2015 Infiniti QX60 vehicles and 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid vehicles. The affected vehicles received an incorrect occupant classification system (OCS) control unit during a repair. These OCS control units may incorrectly classify the front passenger seat as empty, when it is occupied by an adult.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the OCS does not detect an adult occupant in the passenger seat, the passenger air bag would be deactivated. Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the passenger.

Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will update the OCS software, free of charge. The recall began on November 30, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

In April 2014, Nissan North America launched Safety Recall 14V-138 to address problems with the Occupant Classification System (OCS) algorithm in the following vehicles: model year (MY) 2013-2014 Nissan Altima, Pathfinder, Sentra and LEAF; MY 2013 Infiniti JX35; MY 2014 Infiniti QX60 and Q50; and MY 2013 Nissan NV 200/Taxi vehicles.According to Nissan, the OCS may misclassify adult front passenger occupants and turn off the passenger's frontal air bag for an adult occupant of sufficient weight.In March 2015, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Recall Query after the agency received approximately 124 complaints alleging problems with the OCS after the recall repairs and/or other OCS related repairs were made by Nissan/Infiniti dealers.The majority of the complaints alleged the passenger air bag status light stays on (i.e., indicating passenger air bag is turned off) for adult front passengers of sufficient weight.Many of the complaints stated the dealers have made multiple repairs but the problem still persists.In its June 2015 response to ODI's information request under the Recall Query, Nissan provided approximately 1,121 complaints and field reports on the recalled vehicles.These reports alleged OCS issues similar to the NHTSA reports described above.At this time, NHTSA has received a total of approximately 208 complaints (note: total of 1,271 reports shown in the table above eliminates 58 duplicative reports received by ODI and manufacturer).This Recall Query has been upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA15-004) to conduct a comparative assessment and further evaluate the effectiveness of the recall remedy which will include a thorough review of the countermeasures taken by Nissan and its suppliers.The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed online at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following identification numbers:10583283 10585264 10585349 10585379 10592434 10593399 10593501 10594329 10594614 10594755 10595161 10595645 10595946 10596128 10596459 10596952 10597037 10597452 10597518 10597719 10598537 10598869 10604755 10604834 10605188 10605251 10606565 10606828 10607038 10609649 10610519 10610991 10614467 10614609 10614745 10616905 10617008 10617507 10617903 10618099 10618202 10619059 10619563 10620719 10621840 10622214 10625808 10625981 10625998 10626006 10626023 10626335 10626458 10626732 10628355 10629382 10629460 10629606 10630441 10630502 10630990 10632251 10632588 10632934 10632997 10633714 10633810 10637994 10638591 10639040 10639147 10639324 10639473 10643046 10643843 10644203 10644333 10644341 10644690 10644891 10644985 10648834 10648997 10649414 10649772 10649874 10651360 10651564 10651924 10651982 10652024 10658665 10658844 10659484 10660294 10661195 10661358 10661541 10661795 10661855 10662901 10663033 10663338 10663860 10663978 10668054 10668768 10670538 10672807 10673088 10676471 10678478 10678997 10679512 10680748 10680769 10680975 10681656 10682235 10682902 10682993 10683391 10683689 10689672 10689809 10689981 10691626 10692137 10692558 10692625 10693168 10695312 10700614 10700960 10701008 10701011 10701014 10701018 10701023 10701027 10701031 10701032 10701035 10701045 10701055 10701064 10701074 10701146 10701196 10701228 10701237 10701254 10701301 10701306 10701326 10701367 10701370 10701384 10701415 10701453 10701526 10701558 10701656 10701670 10701946 10702003 10702667 10702798 10703032 10703657 10703766 10703813 10704196 10704988 10705530 10705919 10706621 10712543 10712568 10712575 10713335 10714316 10714330 10714536 10714980 10715132 10715945 10717336 10720918 10720971 10721331 10721746 10723424 10724568 10731167 10731868 10732012 10732065

On May 20, 2014, ODI opened PE14-014 based on eight complaints alleging incidents of excessive brake pedal travel in model year (MY) 2013 through 2014 Nissan Sentra, Versa Sedan and Versa Note passenger cars (Figure 1) and information in Early Warning Reporting field reports indicating issues with master cylinder internal seals. In response to an information request letter sent by ODI, Nissan identified a condition with the master cylinder in early production subject vehicles that could result in a slow internal leak past one of the recuperating seals to the brake reservoir when the brake pedal is depressed very slowly or lightly (Figure 2).The subject vehicles are equipped with fixed seal master cylinders supplied by TRW.To address concerns with water hammer noise with the standard seal design, the master cylinders in the early production subject vehicles used AWH (anti-water hammer) seals. The AWH seals are sensitive to contamination from assembly plant cleanliness issues, which can produce the internal leak condition during slow or light brake applies but perform as designed with normal or emergency brake applications.TRW indicated that the risk of contamination interacting with the subject seals is greatest after the evacuation and pressure fill process used to fill the brake system during the manufacturing process (early life issue).TRW developed a new master cylinder seal design (EVO seal) that addresses the noise concern and eliminates the internal leak concern associated with contamination by providing a secondary seal (Figure 3).Nissan implemented the new master cylinder design in vehicle production on September 23, 2013.ODI's analysis shows that the master cylinder warranty claim rate is much higher in vehicles produced before the change (Figure 4).Statistical analysis showed that the condition is an early-life problem with relatively low failure rates projected through 100,000 miles and approximately 58 percent of the failures projected to occur by that mileage have already occurred (Table 1).Warranty claims are highest (78% of claims) in vehicles with less than 10,000 miles (Figure 5) and 50 percent of claims involved vehicles with less than 90 days in service (Figure 6).ODI evaluated 22 crash claims that included allegations of master cylinder failure, sinking brake pedal or pedal to the floor (Table 2).The analysis identified only three crashes in which a brake performance issue related to the master cylinder was duplicated by post-incident inspection, including one with a different problem than the seal leak issue (a broken plunger). The two crash complaints related to a possible master cylinder concern involved 1 vehicle with the AWH seal and 1 with the EVO seal. Both were minor crashes. The remaining crashes do not appear to be related to any issues with the master cylinder or other brake system fault. In the 4 crashes with Event Data Recorderinformation available, the data indicated that the brakes were applied too late to avoid the collisions. These include 2 crashes with less than a half second of braking before impact and 2 in which brake applications lasting 1.0 to 2.5 seconds resulted in high decelerations consistent with fully functioning brake systems, but too late to avoid the collision.Overall, the rates of crashes adjusted for vehicle exposure (total vehicle years in service) do not show any correlation to the high warranty rates associated with the AWH seal leak concern (Table 3 & Figure 7).Given these circumstances, further use of the agency resources in this matter does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, this investigation is closed.
