I am filing this complaint regarding Nissan's handling of an open safety recall involving my vehicle and the subsequent engine failure. Nissan issued Recall 26V080 concerning an engine-related defect that can cause engine oil breakdown, bearing damage/seizure, engine damage, and loss of motive power. My vehicle developed the red oil warning light, check-engine light, and reduced engine power before the engine failed. The vehicle also had dark oil and sludge in the engine. The dealership is now attributing the engine failure to alleged lack of maintenance and has denied the engine warranty claim. This is disputed. The vehicle received oil changes at an independent repair facility, and I provided Nissan with receipts documenting the maintenance. The dealership originally relied on the absence of Carfax entries to claim that the oil changes had not occurred. The dealership inspected the vehicle and submitted photographs and a physical sludge sample to Nissan's warranty department. I was told that Nissan's warranty department responded approximately three days later. No Nissan warranty technician or field representative physically inspected my vehicle before the determination was made. Nissan Consumer Affairs told me that the dealership's warranty department made the determination and that they would not disclose what information was submitted or what the sludge sample established. I dispute the conclusion that maintenance caused the engine failure. The presence of sludge does not, by itself, establish what caused the sludge. Nissan's own recall documentation identifies oil breakdown as part of the defect's failure mechanism. I have not been provided with evidence explaining how Nissan distinguished maintenance-related oil degradation from the recalled defect or how it ruled out the recalled defect as a cause or contributing factor. The vehicle experienced a catastrophic engine/motor failure. The engine became extremely loud/rattled and subsequently locked up, causing the vehicle to lose the ability to operate. The vehicle is currently being held for diagnosis/repair and should be available for inspection upon request. The vehicle experienced the failure while I was driving and left me stranded on a mountain. The vehicle lost its ability to operate, creating a significant safety risk because I was left stopped and without reliable transportation. A sudden engine failure while driving could also create a traffic hazard for the occupants and other motorists. Yes. The vehicle has been taken to a Nissan dealership for diagnosis following the failure. The vehicle experienced a catastrophic engine failure/lock-up. I am requesting the dealership’s written diagnostic report and confirmation of the exact failed component. The vehicle has been presented to Nissan for inspection and diagnosis. Nissan is currently involved in determining the cause of the engine failure. There has not been a police inspection that I am aware of. I am requesting that Nissan preserve and provide all diagnostic findings, photographs, technician notes, and repair records. Prior to the failure, the vehicle began exhibiting abnormal engine symptoms, including a loud/rattling engine noise and difficulty operating normally. The symptoms occurred shortly before the catastrophic failure on August 14, 2026. The vehicle subsequently became inoperable when the engine locked up. I am requesting the dealer’s diagnostic scan to determine whether any warning codes or messages were stored before or during the failure.

The contact owns a 2023 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving out of town, the vehicle suddenly went into LIMP Mode. The accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to exceed 70 MPH and decelerated unintendedly. The vehicle was driven approximately 30 MPH to the residence. The message “Engine Malfunction” was displayed, and the temperature gauge rose to HOT. The 4WD message was displayed. The vehicle was pulled over and inspected, and the contact became aware that one of the coolant reservoirs was empty, and coolant was added to the coolant reservoir. The odometer and infotainment screen also repeatedly turned on and off. The vehicle was towed to a local Nissan dealer, where it was diagnosed with a coolant leak in the engine, which caused the engine failure and turbocharger failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V080000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The manufacturer opened a case regarding the failure but offered to cover only 30 percent of the cost of the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 95,600.

On June 3, 2026, I brought my vehicle to O'Brien Nissan of Bloomington because I was experiencing significant problems with the continuously variable transmission (CVT). Specifically, the SERVICE NOW light came on, the vehicle would not shift into park, and I was concerned about a CVT malfunction. I explained these concerns to the service advisor Jason who is the current service manager and expected that the vehicle would be thoroughly inspected and any necessary repairs would be completed. The purpose of my visit was specifically to have the transmission issue addressed and repaired before it developed into a more serious safety concern. The dealership's response was as follows: • Complaint: The CVT malfunction SERVICE NOW light came on, and the car would not shift into park • Cause: TECH FOUND MULTIPLE STORED CODES. NO CURRENT CODES. TECH TESTED TRANSMISSION OPERATION AND FOUND NO ISSUE AT THIS TIME. • Correction: NO REPAIRS SUGGESTED FOR THIS VISIT According to the service manager Jason, the CVT was not serviced because it was approximately 3:30 p.m. when the customer returned the service request form through email and it was close to the end of the workday. When I got to the dealership to pick up and pay the total should have been $336.00 but it was $109.00 that’s when I requested to speak to the manager on duty. I expressed my concern about the CVT and the actions of the vehicle and how it would just take off when trying to park.  I was assured that my vehicle was safe to drive, and that sometimes lights just appear because the cars are digital  per Shawn the manager on duty and I relied on that representation when leaving the dealership.  The Multi-Point Inspection Report from June 3, 2026, also noted the following: Component Status Transmission Fluid Level/Condition Cautioned Fuel Injection System Cautioned Brake Fluid Condition Cautioned Cabin/HEPA Filter Cautioned Engine Air Filter Failed Rear Brake Linings (LR/RR) Cautioned Front Collision Avoidance Light

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2023-2025 Rogue vehicles equipped with 3-cylinder 1.5L variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines. Increased temperatures can break down the engine oil, which may cause the engine bearings to seize and become damaged, leading to engine failure.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Engine failure can cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. A bearing failure may cause a breach in the engine block, allowing hot oil to be discharged, increasing the risk of an engine fire.

Remedy: Dealers will reprogram the engine control module (ECM) software, inspect for diagnostic trouble codes, and test drive the vehicle, free of charge. The dealer may also inspect the oil pan for metal debris, and replace the engine if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 8, 2026. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 800-647-7261. Nissan's numbers for this recall are R25E2 and R25E3. This recall expands previous NHTSA recall number 25V437. The engine bearings may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine failure.

Consequence & remedy

The driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners may have been incorrectly manufactured, which can cause the seat belts to not properly restrain occupants. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection," 209, "Seat Belt Assemblies," and 210 "Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages."

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Improperly restrained occupants have an increased risk of injury during a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the front seat belt assemblies, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 26, 2024. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PD105.

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2024 Titan, Frontier, Infiniti QX60, Pathfinder, 2023-2024 Sentra, Versa, Kicks, Infiniti QX50, and 2023 Rogue vehicles. Due to a manufacturing issue, the driver's air bag inflator may absorb moisture, and cause the air bag to deploy improperly.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: An air bag that deploys improperly may not protect the driver as intended during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the front driver's air bag assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 10, 2024. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's numbers for this recall are PD103, PD104, and PMA34.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A loose rear seat belt anchor fastener may not properly restrain an occupant in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect and tighten the rear seat belt anchor bolts. Additionally, dealers will apply warning labels to the seat belt attachment points to indicate the bolt size and torque value required for any future seat belt repair. Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2023 Rogue, Pathfinder, and Infiniti QX60 vehicles. The driver's powered seat may not be fully secured to the seat frame, causing the seat frame welds to detach from the rear inboard seat bracket.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: An unsecured seat with broken welds may not properly restrain an occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect the driver's seat rail clearance, and if necessary, replace the driver's seat cushion frame, free of charge. PE24020 · 2021 Nissan Rogue Inner Tie Rod Failures

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation to assess allegations of tie rod bending, deformation, or related steering linkage damage in certain 2021 Nissan Rogue vehicles. A bent tie rod can affect wheel alignment and steering geometry, and in some circumstances may result in steering pull, abnormal tire wear, reduced steering precision, difficulty maintaining directional control, or loss of vehicle steering control, increasing the risk of a crash. ODI reviewed Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs), Early Warning Reporting data, manufacturer field reports, warranty claims, consumer complaints submitted to the manufacturer, and other information provided by Nissan in response to ODI’s information request. ODI also evaluated the reported failure circumstances, vehicle age and mileage, incident severity, and whether the available evidence indicated a defect trend occurring in the absence of external impact or other non-defect causes. Based on the information reviewed, ODI identified a low number of tie rod bending or deformation allegations relative to the subject vehicle population and exposure. The available reports did not indicate a consistent failure pattern, common production period, common mileage, or repeatable failure mode suggestive of a safety-related defect. Many of the reviewed incidents involved circumstances consistent with external loading or impact-related damage, including pothole strikes, curb contact, road debris impacts, prior collision damage, or other abnormal steering/suspension loads. ODI’s analysis did not identify a trend of tie rod bending occurring during normal vehicle operation without evidence of external influence. The complaint and warranty rates were low, and ODI did not identify a pattern of crashes, injuries, or loss-of-control events attributable to a tie rod defect in the subject vehicles. Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. PE23023 · Complete Loss Of Motive Power Due To Engine Failure

On December 13, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE23-023 to investigate allegations of engine failures leading to loss of motive power in model year (MY) 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue; MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; and MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50 vehicles. At that time, ODI had received 6 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQ) and multiple early warning reports, with consumers reporting engine knocking noises accompanied by a loss of engine power while driving. The investigation identified bearing failures in certain vehicles equipped with the subject 3-cylinder 1.5L or 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines. ODI also identified early warning reports describing thermal incidents that occurred immediately after the vehicle suffered a catastrophic engine failure.  The failures were the result of a manufacturing defect in specific engine bearings (main, A-, C-, and L-link) or other engine components that may cause engine damage and potentially lead to engine failure. Engine failure can result in a loss of motive power event that can increase the risk of a crash.  Engine failure might also result in a fire if internal components detach and impact the engine block creating a hole that allows engine oil to reach hot surfaces. In its April 2024, May 2024, and June 2025 responses to ODI’s information requests, Nissan provided 998 customer reports (including complaints, field reports, and legal claims) and 1,107 warranty claims related to the alleged defect.  When combining ODI and manufacturer report data, there are 1,878 unique VINs that have experienced failures across all subject vehicles.  In one of the early warning reports, ODI identified an incident involving a 2022 Infiniti QX55 that resulted in an engine fire following an alleged engine failure. The 2022 Infiniti QX55 was not included in the scope of this investigation but the vehicle model shares the same 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo engine.  Based on the information included with the early warning report, the fire can be directly related to the alleged defect.   A further review of ODI and manufacturer data, identified 12 allegations of engine compartment fires in subject vehicles; three were confirmed as directly related to the engine failure, and nine reports described an under-hood fire that occurred following a loss of power event. Additionally, ODI identified multiple reports describing an engine block crack or hole surrounded by oil residue following an engine failure. On June 27, 2025, Nissan submitted recall 25V-437 involving 443,899 MY 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue, MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50; and 2022 Infiniti QX55 vehicles. The recall remedy provides the dealer instructions to inspect the engine oil pan for the presence of specific metal debris. For customers with the 3-cylinder 1.5L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected during the inspection, dealers will replace the oil pan gasket, engine oil, and reprogram the vehicle’s Engine Control Module (ECM). For customers with the 4-cylinder 2.0L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected, dealers will replace the engine oil. In the case where specific debris is detected and confirmed by Nissan Powertrain Call Center, dealers will be instructed to replace the engine. In addition, Nissan will extend the vehicle warranty to 10 years and 120,000 miles for the recall subject vehicle population after the dealer performs the inspection. Nissan has implemented multiple corrective actions to address the identified manufacturing defects of certain engine block internal components.  In view of the recall action (25V437) taken by Nissan, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The investigation identified bearing failures in certain vehicles equipped with the subject 3-cylinder 1.5L or 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines. ODI also identified early warning reports describing thermal incidents that occurred immediately after the vehicle suffered a catastrophic engine failure.  The failures were the result of a manufacturing defect in specific engine bearings (main, A-, C-, and L-link) or other engine components that may cause engine damage and potentially lead to engine failure. Engine failure can result in a loss of motive power event that can increase the risk of a crash.  Engine failure might also result in a fire if internal components detach and impact the engine block creating a hole that allows engine oil to reach hot surfaces. In its April 2024, May 2024, and June 2025 responses to ODI’s information requests, Nissan provided 998 customer reports (including complaints, field reports, and legal claims) and 1,107 warranty claims related to the alleged defect.  When combining ODI and manufacturer report data, there are 1,878 unique VINs that have experienced failures across all subject vehicles.  In one of the early warning reports, ODI identified an incident involving a 2022 Infiniti QX55 that resulted in an engine fire following an alleged engine failure. The 2022 Infiniti QX55 was not included in the scope of this investigation but the vehicle model shares the same 4-cylinder 2.0L variable compression turbo engine.  Based on the information included with the early warning report, the fire can be directly related to the alleged defect.   A further review of ODI and manufacturer data, identified 12 allegations of engine compartment fires in subject vehicles; three were confirmed as directly related to the engine failure, and nine reports described an under-hood fire that occurred following a loss of power event. Additionally, ODI identified multiple reports describing an engine block crack or hole surrounded by oil residue following an engine failure. On June 27, 2025, Nissan submitted recall 25V-437 involving 443,899 MY 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue, MY 2019-2021 Nissan Altima; MY 2019-2021 Infiniti QX50; and 2022 Infiniti QX55 vehicles. The recall remedy provides the dealer instructions to inspect the engine oil pan for the presence of specific metal debris. For customers with the 3-cylinder 1.5L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected during the inspection, dealers will replace the oil pan gasket, engine oil, and reprogram the vehicle’s Engine Control Module (ECM). For customers with the 4-cylinder 2.0L VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is detected, dealers will replace the engine oil. In the case where specific debris is detected and confirmed by Nissan Powertrain Call Center, dealers will be instructed to replace the engine. In addition, Nissan will extend the vehicle warranty to 10 years and 120,000 miles for the recall subject vehicle population after the dealer performs the inspection. Nissan has implemented multiple corrective actions to address the identified manufacturing defects of certain engine block internal components.  In view of the recall action (25V437) taken by Nissan, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation.
