I WAS DRIVING MY 2017 NISSAN ROGUE ON A ROUTINE TRIP FROM MY HOME TO MY OFFICE. I WAS TURNING THROUGH A RESIDENTIAL INTERSECTION WHEN MY CAR SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING MID-ACCELERATION. I WOULD ESTIMATE I WAS GOING NO MORE THAN 5-7MPH AS I ACCELERATED FROM THE STOP SIGN INTO 25 MPH. BECAUSE I WAS GOING UP A SLIGHT INCLINE, I WAS ABLE TO PUT IT INTO NEUTRAL AND COAST BACKWARDS OUT OF THE INTERSECTION. I CONTACTED AAA AND WAITED FOR THEM TO RUN THEIR BATTERY TESTS. AFTER RULING OUT BATTERY ISSUES, I HAD IT TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO ENCOURAGED ME TO TAKE IT TO NISSAN DUE TO A COMPUTER MALFUNCTION. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THAT WHAT HAPPENED SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN. NISSAN PUT IT THROUGH THEIR OWN TESTS TO DETERMINE WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED WITH THE COMPUTER. THEY LATER FOUND THAT A WIRE HAD BEEN RUBBING AGAINST A BOLT. THE WIRE WAS THE WIRE THAT CONNECTS THE COMPUTER TO THE ENGINE. AS EXPLAINED TO ME: THE WIRES OF THE CAR ARE ALL BUNDLED TOGETHER AND INSIDE OF A "PROTECTIVE" TUBE. THE TUBE WAS RUBBING AGAINST THE BOLT, THEN OPENED UP, EXPOSING THE WIRES. THE WIRE THAT HAPPENED TO BE THE ONE THAT CONTINUED TO BE IN CONTACT WITH THE BOLT WAS THE WIRE THAT THEN SHORTED THE COMPUTER AND TURNED THE ENGINE OFF. THEY ENSURED ME THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT I DID THAT CAUSED THIS BUT THEY WERE UNSURE WHY THE WIRES/TUBE WAS IN THE LOCATION THAT IT WAS. IT WAS A LITTLE OVER 1,000 MILES OUTSIDE OF THE WARRANTY (MY CAR HAD 37,300 MILES ON IT) AND REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I ATTEMPTED CONTACT WITH NISSAN NORTH AMERICA MULTIPLE TIMES, THE FIRST WOMAN EVENTUALLY TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AS IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. WHEN I ASKED TO SPEAK TO HER SUPERVISOR, SHE NEVER RETURNED MY CALLS.

I WENT FROM 65 MILES PER HOUR TO 35 MILES PER HOUR IN A MATTER OF SECONDS. THANKFULLY I WAS NOT HIT BY ANOTHER CAR. THE SECOND ISSUE IS THAT THE ENGINE FEELS LIKE IT MIGHT STALL UPON START AFTER SITTING ALL DAY. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE THIRD ISSUE IS THAT THE BLUETOOTH RADIO SYSTEM HAS A WHISTLING SOUND WHEN TRYING TO USE THIS AND BE SAFE WHILE DRIVING. THE FOURTH ISSUE IS THAT THE INTERIOR BACK DOOR PULLS TO CLOSE THE DOOR BOTH POP OUT AND CANNOT BE PUSHED BACK INTO PLACE. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN AWAY FROM ME FOR A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF TIME SO NISSAN CAN TRY AND MAKE REPAIRS. CONSUMER AFFAIRS TOLD US THAT SIMPLY THERE WAS NO FIX FOR THE BLUETOOTH ISSUE AND THAT THE BACK DOOR PULLS WAS A DESIGN FLAW FROM THE MANUFACTURER.

A RED KEY APPEARED IN THE DASHBOARD FLASHING. IT TOOK SEVERAL MINUTES BEFORE THE KEY EVENTUALLY TURNED. THIS ONLY LASTED A DAY. FAST FORWARD TO NOW MY CAR KEEPS STALLING. I TOOK IT BY AN AUTO ZONE, I WAS TOLD IT WAS MY ALTERNATOR. WELL I JUST PURCHASED THIS CAR NEW LAST YEAR. IT'S ONLY A YEAR OLD. THIS MORNING, IT GAVE ME THE SAME ISSUE. I GO TO TURN THE CAR ON DRIVE OUT THE LOT AND IT KEEPS STALLING. NO INDICATORS IN THE DASHBOARD ARE INDICATING ANYTHING IS WRONG. I'M AFRAID SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY WRONG AND DO NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE DRIVING IT. I JUST DROPPED IT OFF AT THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED IT. PER THE STAFF, EVERYTHING IS NORMAL. I'M NOW AWAITING A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK.

WHILE ON CITY STREETS, TRYING TO COME TO A STOP I APPLIED THE BREAKS AND NOTHING HAPPENED, I THEN HAD TO LET OFF THE PEDAL AND REAPPLY PRESSURE TO BRING THE CAR TO A STOP. I TOOK THE CAR INTO A NISSAN DEALERSHIP AND THEY REFUSED TO LOOK AT THE CAR BECAUSE I HAVE HAD IT IN TO HAVE THE BREAKS, ENGINE HESITATION, EXTENDED ENGINE CRANK, AND AN A/C PROBLEM FIXED 6 TIMES IN 5 MONTHS. NISSAN HAS A TSB OUT FOR AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM THAT HAS THEM RESET THE COMPUTER BUT IT DOES NOT FIX ANY ISSUES. NISSAN TOLD ME TO GET THE PROBLEMS TO STOP I NEED TO CYCLE THE KEY. WHEN I ASKED WHAT THAT MEANT THEY SAID TO STOP THE CAR, PUT IT IN PARK, TURN THE CAR OFF, AND TURN IT BACK ON. I SAID EVEN IF IT HAPPENS WHEN I AM DRIVING AT 70 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY? THEY SAID YES.

2017-NISSAN ROGUE SPORT; DRIVING ON HWY 41, THE ROGUE LOSES POWER/POWER FAILURE AND ALMOST COMES TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE ROGUE THEN COMES BACK UP AND CONTINUES UP HWY 41. THE REAR STOP LIGHTS DID NOT COME ON WHEN THE POWER WENT DOWN. I WAS ON A 5 LANE HWY AND COULD HAVE BEEN HIT FROM BEHIND. ALSO, WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE CAR SINCE I WAS IN THE MIDDLE LANE. IN SPEAKING WITH THE DEALERSHIPS, THIS APPEARS TO BE A KNOWN ISSUE. I TOOK IT TO AUTONATION NISSAN THEY KEPT IT FOR TWO DAYS. WHEN I PICKED THE ROGUE UP FROM THEIR CALL, IT DID NOT AND HAS NOT DRIVEN THE SAME; I EXPLAINED THIS TO THE TECH. WHEN HE TEST DROVE IT WITH US, HE GUNNED IT GOING UP A HILL, THE ENGINE JUST RACED, THE CAR DID NOTHING. HE IMMEDIATELY TURNED TO A DOWNHILL RD AND TOOK THE CAR BACK TOT THE DEALERSHIP. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE WHICH I'VE BEEN THROUGH THIS BEFORE WITH NISSAN. EVERYONE AT THE DEALERSHIPS WANTS TO SAY AND TALK ABOUT ELECTRICAL ISSUES, FIRST THING THE CHECK. I SPOKE WITH A PERSON AT THE DEALERSHIP THAT ADVISED THEY DO WHAT NISSAN TELLS THEM TO DO. SO IT APPEARS THE SAFETY ISSUE CONTINUES, NISSAN HAS THE RESET THE COMPUTER TO NEW SETTINGS AND THE PROBLEMS AND SAFETY ISSUE IN OUR OPINION IS NEVER ADDRESSED. I NOW HAVE A 2017 ROGUE SPORT WITH SAFETY ISSUES AND SOUNDS LIKE AN OLD CAR ON ITS LAST LEG AFTER THE DEALERSHIP IS DONE WITH IT. ITS TIME NISSAN STEPS UP TO THE PLATE AND FIXES THE PROBLEM.

WHEN YOU CROSS OVER RAILROAD TRACKS THAT HAVE OVERHEAD ELECTRICAL POWER; IE. COMMUTER RAIL TRACKS IN URBAN / SUBURBAN MARKETS; THE FRONT END COLLISION CAMERA THINKS YOU ARE ABOUT TO HAVE A "FRONT END" COLLISION, EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE NO OBJECTS IN FRONT OF YOU. THE SUV WILL STOP DEAD IN ITS TRACKS AND THE STALL OUT. WHEN FIRST REPORTED TO NISSAN IN EARLY DECEMBER , 2017 THEY STATED THAT I WAS ONLY THE 4TH CASE NATIONALLY TO REPORT THIS & THE FIRST THE DALLAS, TX GENERAL MARKET AREA. AFTER MUCH DISCUSSION, THEY PULLED MY VEHICLE IN MID-JANUARY AND PROVIDED A RENTAL CAR. THEY CLAIMED THERE WAS A SOFTWARE GLITCH THAT HAS ONLY BEEN REPORTED IN THE SAME MAKE, MODEL & YEAR AS MY SUV. THEY BELIEVE THE FRONT END CAMERA IS NOT PROPERLY INSULATED FROM THE OVER HEAD ELECTRICAL MAGNETIC FIELD GENERATED BY OVERHEAD POWER LINES ON THE RAIL TRACKS. MY SUV HAS STALLED OUT TWICE AT THE SAME RAIL CROSSING. LAST WEEK I WAS INFORMED THERE WERE OVER 40 CASES NATIONALLY REPORTED AND ABOUT 5 CASES IN THE DALLAS MARKET, INCLUDING FORT WORTH. THEY FURTHER STATED THAT SEVERAL VEHICLES ARE MORE "OCCURRENCES" THAN MINE. NEITHER THE DEALERSHIP OR NISSAN THEMSELVES WILL NOT COMMUNICATE ANY OPINIONS IN WRITING TO ME. THIS IS MY OPEN CASE #[XXX], [XXX] . YOU MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800 NISSAN-1, #7. MY NUMBER IS [XXX],OR [XXX] I HAVE NOT HAD THE USE OF MY VEHICLE FOR ALMOST 50 DAYS. IN MY OPINION NISSAN HAS BEEN BOTH VAGUE & EVASIVE WITH THEIR RESPONSE AND COURSE OF ACTION. IN ADDITION, THEY ARE NOT SURE IF THIS PROBLEM AT ALL. MY CONCERN IS; "IF NISSAN CAN NOT VALIDATE THE PROBLEM; HOW CAN THEY VALIDATE THE FIX AND WILL IT WORK"? INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

THE FACTORY SPARE TIRE WAS INSTALLED AS REULT OF A FLAT LF TIRE. UPON DRIVING TO THE CAR DEALERSHIP ON DRY HIGHWAY, TO REPAIR FLAT, THE CARS AWD LOCK INITIATED BY ITSELF AT 50 MPH CAUSING THE DRIVE SYSTEM TO OVERHEAT WITHIN A COUPLE MINUTES. STEERING FELT LIKE ALL WHEEL DRIVE WAS ACTIVE ALONG WITH A LIGHT GROWLING NOISE. DASH ALARMS CAME ON INDICATING 'HIGH TEMPERATURE, STOP VEHICLE'. I STOPPED, AWD LOCK INDICATOR GOES OFF ALONG WITH HIGH TEMPERATURE ALARM. RESUMED DRIVING TO DEALERSHIP AND 1MINUTE LATER THE PROBLEM REPATED EXACTLY THE SAME AGAIN. RESUMED DRIVING AGAIN, PROBLEM REPEATS TWO MORE TIMES RESULTING IN 4 TOTAL STOPS ON THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY BEFORE AN EXIT. NISSAN DEALER ANALYSIS STATES THAT WHEN REACHING 50 MPH WITH SPARE TIRE IN USE WILL HAPPEN AND IS NOT DEFINED AS A VALID DEFECT OR PROBLEM. I BELIEVE THIS CREATES SAFETY HAZARDS FROM STOPPING, CHANGE IN STEERING HANDLING AND POTENTIAL OF MAJOR COMPONENTS FAILURE POSSIBLY FIRE OF OVERHEATING. *DSY

PE19010 · False Automatic Emergency Braking

Opened Sep 9, 2019 · No close date supplied

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Forward Collision Avoidance: Automatic Emergency Braking

NHTSA received a defect petition (DP19-001) from the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) on March 21, 2019 alleging that the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system on Model Year (MY) 2017-2018 Nissan Rogue and Rogue Sport vehicles was engaging in cases where there was no obstruction in the path of the vehicle. The CAS petition additionally alleges that, based on Nissan's actions, the manufacturer is aware of the issue due to issuing a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) launching two "Quality Actions," and initiating a "Customer Service Initiative" in relation to it. CAS contends that Nissan's actions do not represent an adequate long-term solution to the problem, as the action is only available during the basic coverage period of the warranty. CAS also argues that the alleged failures are an unreasonable risk to safety and views Nissan's communications as not acknowledging the potential safety issue involved, instead treating the alleged problem as a performance update. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) analyzed Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) complaints received from consumers and identified a total of 129 unique subject vehicle reports (for all submission dates) alleging a false positive triggering of AEB. Of these complaints, three were identified that contained allegations of a collision resulting from the activation of the system, and all three indicating related injuries. In response to ODI's April 15, 2019 Information Request letter, Nissan provided data indicating that it has received 750 unique subject vehicle complaints relating to false positive activation of the AEB system. Of these complaints, 12 were identified that contained allegations of a collision resulting from the activation of the system. Four complaints contained allegations of injuries, three of which were the result of a collision. These complaints included duplicates of complaints that ODI received. The injury allegations were limited to soft tissue type injuries such as whiplash and bruising.Based on its review of the information identified to date, ODI has granted the petition and is opening this preliminary evaluation in order to evaluate the cause, scope and frequency of AEB false positive activations, as well as to evaluate the suitability of the manufacturer's campaign to address the concern or improve performance of the AEB system. DP19001 · False Automatic Emergency Braking

Opened Apr 8, 2019 · Closed Sep 16, 2019

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Forward Collision Avoidance: Automatic Emergency Braking

NHTSA received a letter from the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) on March 21, 2019 alleging that the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system on Model Year (MY) 2017-2018 Nissan Rogue and Rogue Sport vehicles was engaging in cases where there was no obstruction in the path of the vehicle. The CAS petition additionally alleged that, based on Nissan's actions, the manufacturer was aware of the issue due to issuing a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) launching two Quality Actions, and initiation of a Customer Service Initiative in relation to it. CAS contended that Nissan's actions do not represent an adequate long-term solution to the problem, as the action is only available during the basic coverage period of the warranty. CAS also argued that the alleged failures are an unreasonable risk to safety and views Nissan's communications as not acknowledging the potential safety issue involved, instead treating the alleged problem as a performance update. The injury allegations were limited to soft tissue type injuries such as whiplash and bruising.Based on its review of the information identified to date, ODI grants this petition and has opened preliminary evaluation PE19-010 in order to evaluate the cause, scope and frequency of AEB false positive activations, as well as to evaluate the suitability of the manufacturer's campaign to address the concern or improve performance of the AEB system. The complaints cited can be viewed at NHTSA.gov under the following ODI identification numbers: 11230875, 11230481, 11230361, 11229400, 11229302, 11229294, 11228994, 11223074, 11222925, 11222644, 11220499, 11218713, 11218608, 11217157, 11210334, 11210256, 11210148, 11209127, 11209032, 11207333, 11205931, 11205717, 11205661, 11205172, 11205124, 11205027, 11204803, 11204349, 11204324, 11196805, 11196561, 11196466, 11196091, 11195938, 11195574, 11194380, 11193989, 11192761, 11192283, 11192063, 11190855, 11190840, 11189976, 11187374, 11186903, 11185890, 11185883, 11185132, 11183406, 11180813, 11174713, 11173666, 11173302, 11172299, 11171331, 11170989, 11165434, 11164646, 11162898, 11162502, 11162396, 11161413, 11161230, 11155985, 11155209, 11155181, 11154181, 11153607, 11153334, 11151373, 11151028, 11142595, 11142557, 11142386, 11141775, 11141433, 11141387, 11141347, 11140604, 11139711, 11139226, 11133402, 11132376, 11130998, 11130662, 11129949, 11128704, 11124099, 11123564, 11123353, 11123321, 11122783, 11119475, 11119300, 11118604, 11115088, 11113479, 11113371, 11112371, 11111659, 11111057, 11110919, 11110689, 11104075, 11103844, 11103437, 11102715, 11102333, 11100117, 11099313, 11091006, 11089960, 11089798, 11089533, 11088815, 11088718, 11081072, 11079453, 11073644, 11072718, 11065505, 11061598, 11057739, 11056061, 11055766, 1104
