MY AIRBAG LIGHT IS FLASHING ON MY DASHBOARD. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF DRIVING MY VEHICLE WITH THIS WARNING.
MY 09 NISSAN FRONTIER SE (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) GRINDED A BIT WHEN CHANGING GEARS. I NOTICED IT WAS BETWEEN 3RD AND 4TH GEARS. SOMETIMES IT WAS LOUDER AND LONGER THAN OTHER TIMES. MY 09 NISSAN FRONTIER SE (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) GRINDED A BIT WHEN CHANGING GEARS. I NOTICED IT WAS BETWEEN 3RD AND 4TH GEARS. SOMETIMES IT WAS LOUDER AND LONGER THAN OTHER TIMES. SOMETIMES IT DIDN'T HAPPEN AT ALL. I NOTICED IT HAPPENS WHEN I ACCELERATED SLOWLY WITH THE GAS ONLY SLIGHTLY PRESSED. IT DIDN'T HAPPEN AT ALL WHEN ACCELERATING TO GET ON THE FREEWAY, FOR EXAMPLE.I HAD PURCHASED MY FRONTIER AS A USED TRUCK WITH ABOUT 113K MILES ON IT FROM THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP IN EVERETT, WA AND NOTHING WAS SAID OF ANY TRANSMISSION ISSUES (AS YOU'D EXPECT FROM A DEALER). ONLY ABOUT 3 WEEKS LATER AFTER PURCHASING IT THE TRANSMISSION STARTED DOING VERY STRANGE THINGS. WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE ROAD, MY TRUCK WAS SHIFTING LIKE NORMAL. HOWEVER, ALL OF A SUDDEN WHEN SHIFTING TO THE NEXT GEAR I HEARD AND FELT A LOUD THUMP FROM THE ENGINE, THEN THE TRUCK SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS IN A VERY HIGH GEAR AND THE ENGINE WOULD REV VERY LOUDLY WHILE I PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL, BUT MY TRUCK WASN'T ACCELERATING AT ALL. IT SEEMED LIKE THE CAR WAS IN NEUTRAL. I HAD TO PULL OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURN OFF MY TRUCK, THEN RESTART T TO DRIVE AGAIN. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM CONTINUED BUT THIS TIME IT WAS AFTER I HAD GOTTEN ON THE FREEWAY. IT WOULD HAPPEN AFTER ACCELERATING AND SHIFTING ALL THROUGH EACH GEAR (AROUND THE 4TH/5TH GEAR RANGE). I HAD TO PULL OVER 2 MORE TIMES BEFORE FINALLY GETTING TO WORK.
FAULTY AIRBAG SENSOR. AIRBAG LIGHT CONTINUOUSLY BLINKS, DIAGNOSTIC TEST REVEALED CENTER CRASH ZONE SENSOR IS FAULTY. BEING TOLD THAT MY VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL FOR THE SAME PROBLEM, DESPITE BEING AN INCLUDED MODEL/YEAR AND BEING DRIVEN IN AN INCLUDED STATE.

MY WIFE AND I OWN NISSAN VEHICLES. 2 YEARS AGO WE HAD TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION ON HER 2005 PATHFINER. IN OCTOBER OF 2015 MY 2009 FRONTIER TRANSMISSION STARTED TO FAIL BECAUSE OF COOLANT MIXING WITH THE TRANSMISSION FLUID. I DID RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH NISSAN

TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REBUILT DUE TO MANUFACTURING DEFECT AFTER ONLY 64,000 MILES. RADIATOR FLUID HAS LEAKED INTO THE TRANSMISSION OIL WHICH IS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. QUOTED $4200 IN REPAIRS-THEY WILL NEED TO RE-MANUFACTURE THE TRANSMISSION AND REPLACE THE AT VALVE. I REACHED OUT TO NISSAN FOR ASSISTANCE IN THE MATTER SINCE I AM JUST OUTSIDE OF THE 5 YR 75,000 MILE EXTENDED WARRANTY (5 MONTHS OVER 5 YRS). THEY ADVISED THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THEY WILL HELP WITH. WHEN I ASKED IF THIS IS A NORMAL OCCURRENCE FOR NISSAN TRANSMISSIONS TO NEED TO BE REPAIRED AT 64K THE REGIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE MANAGER SIMPLY STATED HE IS NOT A MECHANIC. AT 40MPH, THE VEHICLE JUMPED OUT OF GEAR WHILE DRIVING. I HAD NO POWER AND NEEDED TO PULL OVER. THIS PUT MY PROPERTY AND WELL BEING IN SEVERE DANGER. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO GET OVER WITHOUT INCIDENT, BUT THIS MAY NOT BE THE CASE FOR SOMEONE ELSE. THIS IS CLEARLY A MANUFACTURING FLAW AND NEEDS TO BE HANDLED RESPONSIBLY BY NISSAN. EXTEND MY WARRANTY AND FIX THE TRANSMISSION FREE OF CHARGE. *TR

On February 29, 2012 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) received a letter petitioning the agency to conduct a defect investigation into MY 2005-2010 Nissan Pathfinder, Frontier, and Xterra vehicles [the subject vehicles] for automatic transmission failures related to failed transmission coolers.NHTSA conducted a comprehensive review of data related to this subject. Our report, documenting this review, is available in the document file for this defect petition. It will also be published in the Federal Register. Of the 2,505 referenced complaints, 638 relate to a potential hazard (unable to maintain speed, no motive power, engine stall) and 1,867 concern customer satisfaction issues including, but not limited to, repair cost, vehicle shudder and shake, and engine overheating.Taking into account the allocation of agency resources and priorities and the likelihood that additional investigation would result in a finding that an unreasonable risk to highway safety exists, we conclude that further investigation is not warranted and deny the petition.ODI Complaint ID numbers are referenced on the next page.
