WHILE IN DRIVE, VEHICLE DOES NOT WANT TO SHIFT INTO HIGHER GEAR AND TOOK EXCESSIVELY LONG TO GAIN SPEED. WHEN THIS VEHICLE DID EVENTUALLY SHIFT GEARS, IT SHIFTED EXTREMELY HARD AS IF SOMETHING WAS DAMAGED . AFTER DIAGNOSED BY MECHANIC, I WAS TOLD THAT THE RADIATOR HAD LEAKED WATER AND ANTIFREEZE INTO THE TRANSMISSION AND BOTH RADIATOR AND TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I JUST PURCHASED THIS TRUCK TWO MONTHS PRIOR. ACCORDING TO THE MECHANIC, THIS IS A PROBLEM NISSAN HAS HAD AND KNOWN ABOUT FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND HAS NOT FIXED OR MADE KNOWN. I AM TOLD THIS WILL BE AN EXPENSIVE FIX, ONE THAT I CAN NOT AFFORD ANYTIME SOON. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD BECAUSE THIS VEHICLE COULD NOT SPEED UP AND I ALMOST GOT REAR ENDED SEVERAL TIMES. PLEASE INITIATE A FORMAL INVESTIGATION OF THIS VEHICLE AND THE ABOVE MENTIONED PROBLEM. THIS IS CLEARLY A MANUFACTURER DEFECT AND SHOULD BE CORRECTED BY NISSAN. *TR

MY VEHICLE SHUDDERED AND FELT TO SLIP OUT OF GEAR WHILE DRIVING! BECAUSE OF THIS KNOWN ISSUE OF LEAKING COOLANT CAUSES TRANSMISSION FAILURE. I BOUGHT THIS FRONTIER WITH VERY LOW MILES AND WAS NEVER TOLD OF THIS POTENTIAL ISSUE FROM THE DEALERSHIP. IT SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL AS IT PREVENTS THE VEHICLE FROM ACCELERATING AND IF YOU ARE DRIVING CAN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I AM NOW READING THAT NISSAN OWNERS HAVE NO IDEA THIS IS HAPPENING UNTIL TOO LATE. ONCE THE COOLANT IS MIXED WITH THE TRANSMISSION FLUID THIS LETHAL COMBINATION KILLS THE VALVES, SEALS AND TORQUE CONVERTER -- RENDERING YOUR ENTIRE TRANSMISSION USELESS. I READ THAT THIS ISSUE IS CURRENTLY CONTAINED TO THE 2005?2010 MODEL YEARS. I HAVE A 2006 WITH 64K MILES! IT IS ONLY TIME UNTIL THIS ISSUE CAUSES MULTIPLE ACCIDENTS SINCE THIS ISSUE HAPPENS WHILE CARS ARE DRIVING. PLEASE PUSH NISSAN FOR A RECALL. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR A KNOWN ENGINEERING / MANUFACTURING DEFECT. *TR

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

NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2006 ARMADA, TITAN, INFINITI QX56 AND MODEL YEAR 2005-2006 FRONTIER, PATHFINDER AND XTERRA VEHICLES. THE INTELLIGENT POWER DISTRIBUTION MODULE (IPDM) ASSEMBLY CONTAINS AN ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) RELAY THAT HAS A DIODE FOR ELECTRICAL CURRENT NOISE REDUCTION. THE ECM RELAY MAY ALLOW SILICON VAPOR TO FORM AND, OVER TIME, THE SILICON EVAPORATES FROM THE DIODE MOLDING WHICH CAUSES SILICON OXIDE TO DEVELOP ON THE ECM RELAY CONTACT DUE TO ARCING.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE ENGINE STALLING INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ECM RELAY INSIDE THE IPDM ASSEMBLY. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 6, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006 AND MODEL YEAR 2008 FRONTIER, XTERRA AND PATHFINDER VEHICLES. THE MOLDED FUEL TANK SHELLS CAN DEFORM, CAUSING THE FUEL SENDER FLOAT ARM TO CONTACT AN EMBOSSMENT MOLDED INTO THE TANK SHELL CAUSING THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FUEL GAUGE TO SHOW THAT THE VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY ONE QUARTER TANK WHEN THE FUEL TANK IS EMPTY.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO RUN OUT OF GAS AND STALL IN TRAFFIC, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT INSIDE THE FUEL TANK WITH A NEW ONE THAT HAS A MODIFIED FLOAT ARM. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE MARCH 22, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Engine And Engine Cooling; Fuel System, Gasoline

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received a Petition dated February 5, 2026, requesting an investigation into model year (MY) 2006 Nissan Frontier vehicles. The Petitioner alleges that the vehicle poses an imminent fire hazard due to “[a] powerful and persistent odor of raw gasoline” that he says “emanates from the vehicle” and “indicat[es] a breach in fuel system integrity.” He further alleges that the vehicles can experience sudden engine stalling “during startup and operation,” which he believes could cause collisions or loss of vehicle control. The Petitioner further alleges these symptoms are identical to conditions addressed in previous NHTSA recalls (10V-517, 07V-435, and 10V-075) and that the issues persist in the 2006 MY Nissan fleet despite these past actions. ODI is opening this Defect Petition to evaluate the Petitioner’s allegations and determine whether to grant or deny the Petition.  The Petition can be viewed at NHTSA.gov under NHTSA Number 11718552.
