VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN A DOWNTOWN PARKING GARAGE WHILE MY WIFE WAS AT WORK. SHE CAME OUT OF WORK AFTER DARK, WITH NO ACCESS BACK INTO A BANKING BUILDING, AND THE CAR WOULD NOT START. AFTER CALLING ME AND TRYING A COUPLE THINGS, WE CALLED OUR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND I GOT IN MY CAR TO DRIVE 45 MINUTES THERE. MY WIFE HAD TO WAIT IN THE LOCKED CAR, ALONE, UNTIL MYSELF AND THE TOW TRUCK ARRIVED. THIS WAS AN UNSAFE SITUATION. WE HAD IT TOWED TO A DEALER AND FOUND OUT THE NEXT DAY THAT THE ESCL (ELECTRONIC STEERING CONTROL LOCK) HAD FAILED, WHICH PREVENTS THE CAR FROM STARTING. AFTER SPENDING $650 TO HAVE IT REPAIRED, I DID SOME INVESTIGATION AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM NOT JUST ON THE NISSAN CUBE, BUT WITH ALTIMAS, MAXIMAS, 370Z AND INFINITI VEHICLES. AFTER OUR REPAIR, NISSAN HAD EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE PART, BUT WE WERE PAST THE MILEAGE AND THEY WOULD NOT REIMBURSE US. THEY STILL HAVE AN OPEN SERVICE CAMPAIGN FOR THE ALTIMAS AND MAXIMAS, BUT NOT THE CUBE OR OTHER AFFECTED VEHICLES. THIS IS A SEVER SAFETY CONCERN. MY WIFE WAS ALONE IN A DARK PARKING RAMP FOR ALMOST AN HOUR IN THE INNER CITY. IMAGINE IF THIS HAPPENED TO OTHERS AFTER NISSAN HAS ACKNOWLEDGED IT AS A PROBLEM, AND SOMEONE GETS MUGGED OR KILLED WHILE IN AN UNSAFE AREA AND CANT GET THEIR CAR STARTED. NISSAN SHOULD ISSUE A 100% RECALL ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES AND PROVIDE REIMBURSEMENT FOR OWNERS WHO HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR THE REPAIR.

HAVE REALLY BAD WHIPLASH AND CONTINUE TO SEE A CHIROPRACTOR EVERY 2 WEEKS. I HAVE TAKEN MY NISSAN CUBE 2009 111,000 MILES TO 3 MECHANICS. (NISSAN, MEINEKE AND PISMO AUTOMOTIVE) HAVE DOCUMENTATION AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. INCLUDING NISSAN WHEN THEY SAID THAT IT WOULD BE $260 TO DIAGNOSE I WENT TO 2 OTHER MECHANICS SHORTLY AFTER) OF WHICH, I COULDN'T GET A CLEAR ANSWER AS TO WHICH WAS GOING ON WITH MY ENGINE. THE TRANSMISSION CVT WHICH I NOW KNOW IT IS, BECAUSE OF YOUR WEBSITE, IT WAS MAKING ALL KINDS OF WEIRD NOISES (ENGINE REVVING). JERKING TRANSMISSION, SHIFTING (SLAMMING AND HARSH WHILE BRAKING) HAVE TRANSMISSION LEAKS REPORTED AND REPORTED THAT CVT WAS NOT ONLY LEAKING, BUT BLACKENED IN COLOR. (SAW IT YESTERDAY WHILE MECHANIC SHOWED ME INSIDE OF ENGINE AND CVT. WHEN I PRESS ON GAS PEDAL IT WOULD DROP OUT OF POWER AND HESITATES ON ACCELERATION. TAKING THE LEMON TO NISSAN AGAIN. IT'S CURRENTLY AT PISMO AUTOMOTIVE, AS SOON AS MECHANIC PUTS THE ENGINE BACK TOGETHER I WILL BE TOWING MY CAR (NISSAN SAID I HAD TO TOW IT TO THEM) BUT EVEN THEN, GETTING THE RUN AROUND FROM NISSAN SAYING I HAVE TO PAY BUT IT WILL BE COVERED. *DT CONSUMER STATED BRAKES DID NOT FULLY STOP. PE25005 · Driver Airbag Inflator Rupture

Opened Jun 13, 2025 · Closed Sep 3, 2026

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Air Bags:frontal:driver Side:inflator Module

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25005 on June 13, 2025, to assess the scope, root cause, and potential defect in 2009 Model Year (MY) Nissan Cube vehicles equipped with Takata PSDI-X air bag inflators. At the time the investigation was opened, analysis by Nissan and Takata (now New Leaf LLC) indicated that a rupture occurred at a weld point between the inflator cap and housing in a 2009 MY Nissan Cube.Nissan ruled out the propellant degradation root cause characteristic of the larger, well known, Takata recall, and instead identified a welding root cause. On April 9, 2026, Nissan North America, Inc. submitted a Part 573 Safety Recall Report to address the weld defect.Recall 26V230 includes the 28,388 2009 MY vehicles identified in the opening resume for this investigation and expands the population to include 2010 MY Nissan Cube vehicles for a total population of 47,928 vehicles produced between October 10, 2008, and September 25, 2010.Nissan identified the driver’s front air bag inflator (Takata PSDI-X, Part Number 98560-7991C) produced by TK Services Inc. within a specific lot may contain an improper body weld seal to the inflator base. This improper weld can cause the air bag module to detach from the steering wheel during deployment, increasing the risk of injury to the occupant in the event of a crash. Dealers will inspect the serial number on the driver’s air bag inflator in recalled vehicles to identify the air bag inflator lot. If the inflator is part of the affected lot, the dealer will remove and replace it with a new inflator manufactured by a different supplier. This repair will be performed free of charge. See NHTSA Recall No. 26V230 for further details. Based on Nissan's recall action, this Preliminary Evaluation is closed.

EA21002 · Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture

Opened Sep 17, 2021 · No close date supplied

Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Air Bags:frontal:driver Side:inflator Module; Air Bags:frontal:passenger Side:inflator Module

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede EA15-001, which remains open.
