I WAS DRIVING ON ROUTE 50 GOING 65MPH. THIS VEHICLE IS A QUAD 4X4 AUTOMATIC / STICK SHIFT MANUAL, WHICH WAS IN MY FAVOR. WHEN I REALIZED THE VEHICLE WAS SHUTTING DOWN I HAD TO THINK QUICKLY WHAT MY NEXT STEPS WOULD BE. I STARTED TO GET OVER TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD AND BRAKE, BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS SHUTTING DOWN THE POWER BRAKES WHERE GOING OUT AND I COULD NOT BRAKE COMPLETELY. THE VEHICLE WAS STILL MOVING AND I WAS ABOUT 200 YARDS AWAY FROM MY EXIT AND THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WAS WINDING AROUND TOWARD THE OFF RAMP AND GETTING SMALLER FOR ME TO DRIVE ON. I REALIZED THAT I WAS NOT ABLE STOP THE VEHICLE BY USING THE FLOOR BRAKE THEN THE FEAR FACTOR SET IN. IN MY MIND THE ONLY THING I CAN DO IS PULL THE STICK SHIFT HANDBRAKE AND QUICKLY PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK THEN I WAS ABLE TO GET CONTROL AND SAFELY STOP THE VEHICLE. THIS ORDEAL HAPPENED AT 4:20PM YESTERDAY AND BY THE TIME WE TOWED THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND TRIED TO EXPLAIN TO THE GENERAL SALES MANAGER, SI FAIGE, ON SITE AT DARCARS IN NEW CARROLLTON, MD WHAT ALL TRANSPIRED ON THE ROAD IN THE UNSAFE VEHICLE THAT THEY SOLD US, HE DIDN'T WANT TO HEAR ANY OF IT. *TR

I PURCHASED MY JEEP A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AGO USED. I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS SINCE I HAVE PURCHASED IT. FIRST IT WAS THOUGHT TO BE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM SINCE THE CAR WOULD RANDOMLY SHUTTER, WOULD NOT WANT TO START OR JUST TURNED OFF. BATTERY WAS REPLACED MULTIPLE TIMES, SINCE IT WOULD LEAVE STRANDED AT ANY GIVEN TIME. THE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON, BUT THERE HAS NOT BEEN A SOLUTION TO WHAT IT CAN BE. I FEEL VERY UNSAFE IN MY CAR, AND I AM NOT SURE WHAT TO DO AT THIS POINT. WHEN I TURN THE CAR ON, THERE IS A LOUD HUM OR PROPELLING SOUND COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE. WHEN I COME TO A STOP YOU CAN FEEL THE CAR SHAKE WHEN THE NOISE HAPPENS. *TR

IT NOW HAPPEN IN 4 TIMES SINCE 24 MARCH 2014. TWICE IT HAPPENED IN NORTHERN NJ AS I TRIED TO ENTER THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY, ONCE IN A SHIOPPING MALL AND TWO WEEKS AGO AS I WAS TURN OFF THE MAIN ROAD INTO MY STREET. RECENTLY I HAVE WRITTEN THE DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE EXPLAINING THE PROBLEM BUT I HAVE NEVER RECEIVED EVEN AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT. I WAS TOLD BY CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT I WOULD HAVE TO HAVE AN EXPENSIVE ANALYSIS DONE. WHEN THIS WAS DONE IN 2010 THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING. I WAS TOLD THEY HAD TO SEE IT HAPPEN. I HAD IT HAPPEN 1000 FT FROM THEIR FACILITY, BUT THEY REFUSED SEE THE VEHICLE UNLESS IT WAS TOWED. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION ESPECIALLY WHEN IT OCCURS TURNING ON TO A HIGH SPEED HIGHWAY. *TR

I TOOK OWNERSHIP OF THE VEHICLE IN DECEMBER 2013. WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE ENGINE HAS SUDDENLY SHUT DOWN ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE FIRST TIME WAS IN JANUARY 2014 IN HEAVY HIGHWAY TRAFFIC NEAR COLORADO SPRINGS AT ABOUT 50MPH. I WAS ABLE TO MOVE TO THE SHOULDER AND TURNED THE KEY OFF THEN RESTARTED THE ENGINE. THERE SEEMED TO BE NO ADVERSE EFFECTS THEREAFTER SO I THOUGHT IT WAS A RANDOM EVENT. THEN ONE WEEK LATER DRIVING ON A LIGHTLY TRAFFICKED HIGHWAY IN WY AT ABOUT 60MPH, WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED, THE ENGINE AGAIN SUDDENLY SHUT DOWN AND AGAIN I WAS ABLE TO STEER TO THE SHOULDER AND SWITCHED THE IGNITION OFF AND THEN RESTART IT. WHEN I RETURNED HOME I HAD MY LOCAL MECHANIC CHECK THE VEHICLE OVER AND HAD HIM CHECK THE COMPUTER FOR FAULTS. AFTER THE CHECKUP I THOUGHT THE ISSUE WAS SETTLED. THEN IN MARCH DRIVING DOWN A WINDING MOUNTAIN ROAD NEAR BOISE ID THE ENGINE AGAIN SUDDENLY SHUT DOWN AND I STEERED TO THE ROAD SIDE WHERE I SWITCHED THE IGNITION OFF AND THEN RESTARTED IT. THERE AFTER I READ ABOUT THIS ISSUE CONCERNING SOME JEEP MODELS. I PUT MY VIN NUMBER IN THE JEEP WEBSITE AND IT SAID THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR IT. I WILL TAKE IT TO THE DEALER IN HOPES THERE IS A RESOLUTION FOR THIS SEEMINGLY CHRONIC SERIOUS PROBLEM. *JS

SINCE THEN, IT HAS STALLED SEVERAL TIMES AND I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER AND SINCE THERE IS NO ENGINE CHECK LIGHT, DEALER SAYS THEY CANNOT FIND THE PROBLEM. IT WOULD STALL AT ANY SPEED, TEMPERATURE OR ANY CONDITION. I AM AFRAID THAT IT MAY STALL AT THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME. ALTHOUGH IT WOULD START RIGHT AWAY BUT SOMETIMES IT TAKE 3-4 TIMES TO TURN OVER. I HOPE CHRYSLER WOULD FIND A FIX FOR THIS. *TR

Jul 21, 2014

This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.

May 7, 2013

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, through March 9, 2010; and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, through March 10, 2010. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.

Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.

AQ10001 · Fleet Vehicle Recall Completion Audit

Opened Nov 18, 2010 · Closed Dec 28, 2015

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Unknown Or Other

On November 18, 2010, NHTSA's Recall Management Division (RMD) opened an audit query (AQ10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns. It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.RMD queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent. The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls. The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated Documents link above. In December 2015, Congress enacted the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.One section of the Act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls. With the passage of the FAST Act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.
