I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM A TRIP AND WAS TWO HOURS FROM HOME. I STOPPED AT A FRUIT STAND AND WHEN I GOT BACK IN THE VEHICLE IT WOULD NOT START DESPITE IT CLEARLY NOT BEING A BATTERY PROBLEM. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THIS OCCURRED ON A SATURDAY. ON MONDAY WHEN THEY INSPECTED THE VEHICLE IT STARTED WITH NO PROBLEM. THEY RAN A COMPUTER DIAGNOSTIC CHECK AND FOUND NO FAULTS. I WAS TOLD TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE UNTIL IT "ACTED UP AGAIN". TWELVE DAYS LATER IT WOULD NOT START AGAIN. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO DETERMINED THAT THE STARTER MOTOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I FIND IT AMAZING THAT I NEEDED TO WAIT UNTIL THE CAR BROKE DOWN AGAIN IN ORDER TO DETERMINE WHAT WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. CLEARLY THERE WERE ISSUES AND SIMPLY RUNNING A COMPUTER TEST WAS NOT SUFFICIENT. *TR

I REPEAT AND WAIT 5 TIMES OVER ABOUT 5 MINUTES, IT FAILED TO START EACH TIME. FINALLY AFTER I HAVE WAITED ABOUT 2 MORE MINUTES, I TRIED AGAIN AND IT FIRED RIGHT UP LIKE IT IS SUPPOSED TO. IN MAY 2007 WE STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE A/C AND BLOWER MOTOR ON OUR VEHICLE. I CONDUCTED RESEARCH AND FOUND THROUGH TECH ADVISORY THE BLOWER CONTROL MODULE WERE THE PROBLEM AND WERE BEING REPLACED. I DISCONNECTED THE BLOWER CONTROL MODULE AND COULD SEE THE UNIT HAD MELTED AROUND THE WIRE HARNESS PLUG. I DID EXACTLY AS THE TECH ADVISORY RECOMMENDED AND REPLACED THE BLOWER CONTROL MODULE AND WIRE HARNESS PLUG. LESS THAN 70 DAYS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED AGAIN. I PULLED THE BLOWER CONTROL MODULE OUT AND COULD SEE THE NEW MODULE HAD ONCE AGAIN MELTED AROUND THE REPLACED PLUG. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THEY WOULD WARRANTY THE PART AND I JUST NEEDED TO BRING THE ORIGINAL INVOICE AND BAD MELTED BLOWER CONTROL MODULE IN AND THEY WOULD GIVE ME A NEW ONE. I DID THAT LAST NIGHT AND WHEN I WAS AT THE DEALERSHIP THEY LOOKED AT THE MELTED BLOWER CONTROL MODULE AND TOLD ME BECAUSE I DID NOT REPLACE THE ENTIRE WIRE HARNESS THEY WOULD NOT REPLACE THE MELTED MODULE. I INQUIRED AS TO THE COST TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE WIRE HARNESS AS IT REQUIRED PULLING OUT THE ENTIRE DASH TO SIMPLY UNPLUG THE OLD HARNESS AND PLUG THE NEW ONE IN. I WAS TOLD 8 HOURS OF LABOR AND COST OF PARTS FOR THE NEW HARNESS AND BLOWER CONTROL MODULE WHICH WAS ESTIMATED AT $700.00. THE PARTS THEMSELVES ARE LESS THAN $200.00. WHEN I REPLACED THE ORIGINAL PART I DID IT EXACTLY AS THE TECH ADVISORY TOLD ME SO WHICH WAS DATED SOMETIME IN MAY 2007. IN ADDITION TO THE PART MELTING IT HAS SANK THE TOP EDGE OF THE CARPET IN THE PASSENGER SIDE FLOOR BOARD. I VIEW THIS AS AN EXTREME SAFETY HAZARD AND COULD ACTUALLY CASE A FIRE IN THE VEHICLE. THE DEALERSHIP ADVISED NO WARRANTY RECALLS HAVE BEEN ISSUED FOR THIS ISSUE EITHER. I THINK CHRYSLER SHOULD RE-EXAMINE HOW MANY OF THESE BLOWER CONTROL MODULES THEY HAVE REPLACED AND THE RISK THEY ARE PUTTING THE PUBLIC AT BY NOT RECALLING THEM. ANY ASSISTANCE IN THIS MATTER WOULD BE APPRECIATED. *TR

POSITION OF IGNITION IS DANGEROUS: I HAVE TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF WHEN DRIVING BY BUMPING IT WITH MY KNEE. THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES IN THE FIRST 400 MILES OF OWNING THIS VEHICLE. NM
This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.
Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, through March 9, 2010; and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, through March 10, 2010. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.

ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE SOFTWARE PROGRAMMED INTO THE ABS ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE MAY ALLOW A MOMENTARY DELAY IN BRAKING WHEN COASTING UP A HILL DURING CERTAIN CONDITIONS.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE ABS ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE WITH NEW SOFTWARE THAT PREVENTS THIS CONDITION FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 22, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.
ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS IN A CERTAIN LOT MAY HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED FROM GRAY IRON INSTEAD OF DUCTILE IRON AS DESIGNED AND COULD FRACTURE WITHOUT WARNING.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: THIS WOULD INCREASE THE VEHICLE'S STOPPING DISTANCE AND COULD CAUSE A CRASH.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS TO SEE IF THEY FALL INTO THIS LOT AND, IF SO, WILL REPLACE THEM FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 22, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.
ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE MAY CAUSE THE REAR BRAKES TO LOCK UP DURING CERTAIN BRAKING CONDITIONS.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL AND CAUSE A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE ABS ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 19, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

AQ10001 · Fleet Vehicle Recall Completion Audit
Opened Nov 18, 2010 · Closed Dec 28, 2015
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Unknown Or Other
On November 18, 2010, NHTSA's Recall Management Division (RMD) opened an audit query (AQ10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns. It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.RMD queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent. The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls. The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated Documents link above. In December 2015, Congress enacted the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.One section of the Act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls. With the passage of the FAST Act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.
