PASSENGER REAR DOOR HANDLE BROKEN OFF DUE TO CHEAP, DEFECTIVE PLASTIC THE DOOR PANEL IS MADE OF. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, ALL 3 OF THE OTHER DOORS HAVE THE SAME CRACKS IN THE DOOR PANEL - IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THE PLASTIC ON THOSE CRACKS AND CHIPS OFF, AND THOSE DOOR HANDLES ALSO BREAK OFF. YOU CAN NOT OPEN THE DOOR FROM THE INSIDE ONCE THE HANDLES BREAK OFF - THIS IS A DEFECT IN THE DOORS. THIS IS NOT A RESULT OF WEAR AND TEAR ON A VEHICLE THAT HAD LESS THAN 50,000 MILES WHEN WE PURCHASED IT. I HAVE NEVER OWNED A VEHICLE WHERE BROKEN DOOR HANDLES ARE CONSIDERED NORMAL "WEAR AND TEAR". THE COST OF REPAIR IS $600-$700 PER DOOR PANEL - CHYRSLER NEEDS TO OWN THE FACT THAT THESE PARTS ARE DEFECTIVE AND COVER THE COST FOR THEIR OWNERS. THERE ARE MANY, MANY POSTS ON THE INTERNET REGARDING THIS ISSUE FROM HUNDREDS OF JEEP OWNERS - IT IS INEXCUSABLE. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

MY SON HAD HIS JEEP IN DRIVE, SITTING ON AN INCLINE WAITING TO EXIT A PARKING LOT. WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO MOVE FORWARD THE CAR HAD GONE INTO NEUTRAL ON ITS OWN AND HE ROLLED BACK INTO THE VEHICLE BEHIND HIM. HE HAD TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK, TURN IT OFF, START IT AGAIN, AND PUT IT IN DRIVE BEFORE IT WOULD GO FORWARD. THIS INCIDENT CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE FRONT BUMPER OF THE CAR BEHIND HIM. I TOOK THE JEEP TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD BY THEIR TECHNICIAN THAT THE N23 RECALL HAD NEVER BEEN PERFORMED ON THIS VEHICLE. IT HAD BEEN TAKEN TO ANOTHER DEALER TO PERFORM THE RECALL BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER BEFORE I PURCHASED IT AND THAT DEALER INCORRECTLY REPORTED THAT THEY PERFORMED THE RECALL AT THAT TIME. THIS RECALL WAS REQUIRED TO KEEP A CAR FROM SLIPPING INTO NEUTRAL WITHOUT INPUT FROM THE DRIVER. I JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR IN FEBRUARY AND CHECKED FOR ANY OPEN RECALLS BEFORE PURCHASING. JEEP WAS FRAUDULENT WHEN REPORTING THIS RECALL AS COMPLETED AND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DAMAGE INCURRED. JEEP DID HAVE MY VEHICLE INSPECTED, AND I AM STILL WAITING TO HEAR FROM THEM. I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT THEM NUMEROUS TIMES BUT STILL HAVE NOT BEEN CONTACTED BY THEM ABOUT THIS INSPECTION. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT HOW MANY OTHER GRAND CHEROKEES OWNERS ARE DRIVING THEIR VEHICLES THINKING THE RECALL HAD BEEN PERFORMED AND IN FACT IT HAS NOT. *TR

Official recalls
4Jul 21, 2014
This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.
May 7, 2013
Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, through March 9, 2010; and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, through March 10, 2010. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.

On November 18, 2010, NHTSA's Recall Management Division (RMD) opened an audit query (AQ10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns. It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.RMD queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent. The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls. The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated Documents link above. In December 2015, Congress enacted the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.One section of the Act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls. With the passage of the FAST Act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.
