Ignition switch recall which was issued on my jeep commander was addressed and ultimately an appointment was made upon availability. However, since the recall, the jeep will not function normally upon initial start up attempt progressively into more attempts thereafter. Connection between key switch and cylinder not responding to connection, lack thereof. This occurred at first seldom to more and more random periodic "no signal, no start". Recalls are supposed to fix the initial severe problem, correct? Not result into another problem that wasn't present before, right? Found my time fruitless in getting clarity of this issue resolved from dealer. What can I do? What should be done? As the consumer we will feel the job done wasn't done correctly. Fact is there were not any start up issues prior to the recall addressed and ignition switch replaced/fixed?

2006 Jeep Commander Limited 5.7L V8 Message as appears on dash - TRANSMISSION OVER TEMP While driving a short distance the message TRANSMISSION OVER TEMP appears, the fan kicks on HIGH & is very loud, and it feels like the transmission disengages like being thrown into neutral, but is still drivable. About 2 weeks prior, I noticed smoke coming out from under hood & the engine coolant tank was almost empty. There were no visible leaks on carport. I refilled the tank & immediately called Kilby Automotive repair shop, then took it in. They said that the radiator cap needed to be replaced. The also said the valve cover gasket was leaking. They replaced the radiator cap & made an appointment for June 3rd to replace the valve cover gasket. Before that appointment the vehicle started displaying the TRANSMISSION OVER TEMP message. I took it into Kilby Automotive on May 27, 2021. They said it was a faulty transmission temperature sensor, but they could not repair. They have done a lot of repairs on the vehicle for several years. I called Ultimate Luxury Auto Service explaining the issue. The man said that he could put a new sensor in & there is a broken transmission mount. He replaced the sensor. Fix mount later. When I was driving home, the same message appeared & the fan kicked on as before. I messaged the shop & took the vehicle back in. They put a 2nd sensor in, drove it & received the same TRANSMISSION OVER TEMP message. They returned the 2 new sensors & put my original sensor back in. They said they were sorry they could not fix it & dropped the price of repairs. I entered the make, model, & message online & found out a lot of people have the same problem. Some people have said they replaced numerous parts & it did not fix it, and others say they replaced the PCM. I am disabled and do not want to be stranded or have a vehicle fire. I am afraid that it would pose a risk to me & others, as transmission oil can ignite on hot surfaces and cause a fire in the engine.

The fuel tank skid plate is rotting away, this could cause the tank tank to fall out of the vehicle, this looks like a very common problem with a number of jeeps and dodge products.

14V438000 · Electrical System:ignition:switch

Jul 21, 2014

This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.

A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.

Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.

On November 18, 2010, NHTSA's Recall Management Division (RMD) opened an audit query (AQ10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns. It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.RMD queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent. The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls. The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated Documents link above. In December 2015, Congress enacted the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.One section of the Act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls. With the passage of the FAST Act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.

ON MAY 5, 2008, CHRYSLER LLC (CHRYSLER) SUBMITTED A DEFECT INFORMATION REPORT TO NHTSA CONCERNING AN ENGINE CALIBRATION ISSUE THAT COULD RESULT IN ENGINE STALL IN APPROXIMATELY 24,461 MODEL YEAR (MY) 2006 JEEP COMMANDER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE 4.7L V-8 ENGINE AND BUILT FROM FEBRUARY 25, 2005 THROUGH JANUARY 11, 2006.ACCORDING TO CHRYSLER, THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) WAS PROGRAMMED WITH SOFTWARE THAT MAY ALLOW THE ENGINE TO STALL DURING CERTAIN OPERATING CONDITIONS.CHRYSLER DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE PCM SOFTWARE IN THE RECALLED VEHICLES. INFORMATION PROVIDED BY CHRYSLER DURING PE07-009 AND EA07-007 INDICATED THAT A REVISED ENGINE CALIBRATION WAS IMPLEMENTED IN PRODUCTION EFFECTIVE JANUARY 12, 2006 FOR THE MY 2006 JEEP COMMANDER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 4.7L V-8 ENGINES.ODI'S ANALYSIS OFCONSUMER COMPLAINTS, FIELD REPORTS AND OTHER DATA RELATED TO FIELD EXPERIENCE WITH ENGINE STALLING IN MY 2006 THROUGH 2007 JEEP COMMANDER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3.7L, 4.7L AND 5.7L ENGINES IDENTIFIED AN ELEVATED RATE OF STALLING INCIDENTS IN THE MY 2006 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 4.7L ENGINES THAT WERE MANUFACTURED BEFORE THE CALIBRATION CHANGE.ODI INTERVIEWED OVER 70 CONSUMERS WHO REPORTED STALLING INCIDENTS IN EARLY PRODUCTION MY 2006 4.7L VEHICLES.INFORMATION GATHERED FROM THOSE INTERVIEWS INDICATED THAT THE STALLING INCIDENTS WERE OCCURRING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, OFTEN OCCURRED DURING TURNS AND TYPICALLY OCCURRED MORE THAN ONCE.THE INTERVIEWS DID NOT IDENTIFY ANY CONCERNS WITH RESTARTABILITY. ALTHOUGH THE EARLY MY 2006 PRODUCTION VEHICLES WITH 4.7L ENGINES MAKE UP ONLY ABOUT 15 PERCENT OF ALL MY 2006 THROUGH 2007 JEEP COMMANDERS BUILT BY CHRYSLER, THEY WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR 465 OF THE 854 REPORTED STALLING INCIDENTS (54%), 6 OF THE 12 CRASH INCIDENTS (50%) AND THE ONLY INJURY CLAIM.THE STALLING RATE FOR THE RECALLED VEHICLES IS 1.90 PERCENT, ALMOST 7 TIMES GREATER THAN THE RATE IN THE REMAINING POPULATION (0.28 PERCENT).CHRYSLER'S RECALL COVERS THE VEHICLES WITH THE ELEVATED STALLING RATE.THE REMAINING VEHICLES HAVE RELATIVELY LOW RATES OF STALLING AND DO NOT EXHIBIT ANY SIGNS OF AGGRAVATING FACTORS SUCH AS PROBLEMS WITH RESTART. ODI ALSO ANALYZED COMPLAINTS ALLEGING CONCERNS WITH LOSS OF LIGHTING COINCIDENT TO STALLING INCIDENTS.THIS ANALYSIS IDENTIFIED SEVEN STALLING INCIDENTS WHERE LOSS OF EXTERIOR LIGHTING WAS ALLEGED.NO SPECIFIC CAUSE WAS IDENTIFIED IN THESE INCIDENTS AND THERE WAS NO DISCERNIBLE PATTERN REGARDING ENGINE, VEHICLE PRODUCTION OPTIONS, BUILD RANGE OR FAILURE TREND. THIS INVESTIGATION IS CLOSED WITH CHRYSLER'S RECALL.
