THIS HAS HAPPENED INTERMITTENTLY SINCE, AND FROM RESEARCH DONE ONLINE, THIS APPEARS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE ABS BRAKE MODULE, YET HYUNDAI DEALERS THAT I HAVE APPROACHED ABOUT THE PROBLEM ARE UNAWARE THAT THIS IS FAIRLY COMMON, AND ARE RELUCTANT TO REPLACE THIS RATHER EXPENSIVE COMPONENT WITHOUT TOYING AROUND WITH OTHER PERCEIVED "FIXES", SUCH AS REPLACING THE BRAKE FLUID AND/OR THE MASTER CYLINDER. *TR

WELL I HAD ANOTHER INCIDENT WITH MY 2009 HYUNDAI GENESIS? BRAKING SYSTEM, AGAIN.I HAD TO PICK UP ONE OF OUR DAUGHTERS FROM WORK SATURDAY NIGHT. AS I WAS DRIVING, I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO SLOW DOWN TO ENTER THE PARKING LOT, AND THE BRAKE PEDAL HIT THE FLOOR AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP. SINCE IT WAS MIDNIGHT, THERE WAS NOT A LOT OF TRAFFIC, WHICH ALLOWED ME THE TIME TO STEP ON THE BRAKE PEDAL REPEATEDLY UNTIL THE BRAKE PEDAL ENGAGED. I CALLED MY DEALERSHIP SUNDAY MORNING AND THEY HAD IT TOWED IN, AGAIN. NOW I HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE WHAT THEY FIND. LAST TIME THEY COULDN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO US THE SAME WAY IT WENT IN. IN ADDITION, THEY SAID HYUNDAI USA'S POLICY IS TO NOT REPLACE ANYTHING UNLESS THEY CAN DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. WE ALSO HAVE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND THAT WAS OF NO USE. HYUNDAI USA CONTACTED ME BECAUSE OF A COMMENT I LEFT ON THEIR FACEBOOK ACCOUNT. HYUNDAI USA SAID THEY DID AN INQUIRY WITH MY DEALERSHIP AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT AND INSURED ME THE CAR WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. HYUNDAI USA SAID THEY WOULD BE PUTTING IN FOR THEIR OWN ?INVESTIGATION? AND THAT IT WOULD TAKE 6-8 WEEKS. IN THE MEANTIME, I HAVE TO DRIVE A VEHICLE WHICH IS CLEARLY NOT SAFE. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY IT IS HYUNDAI USA HAS TO DO THEIR OWN INVESTIGATION. IS THE DEALERSHIP NOT COMPETENT? DO THEY KNOW SOMETHING THE DEALERSHIP DOES NOT? HOW CAN IT POSSIBLY TAKE 6-8 TO WEEKS? ARE THERE THAT MANY MECHANICAL ISSUES AND COMPLAINTS BEING INVESTIGATED ALL AT ONCE? SHOULDN'T A BRAKING, OR STOPPING, ISSUE BE ADDRESSED AT THE TOP OF THE COMPLAINT LIST? I DON'T FEEL LIKE SOMEONE NEEDS TO BE INJURED OR KILLED IN ORDER TO GET SOMEONE TO REPAIR THE CAR. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. AFTER READING MULTIPLE COMMENTS ON-LINE ABOUT THE 2009 GENESIS? BRAKING PROBLEMS, I WOULD HAVE PURCHASED ANOTHER MODEL OR YEAR. VERY DISSATISFIED WITH HYUNDAI, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

LAST WEEK I WAS DRIVING MY CAR THANK GOD JUST AROUND TOWN AND NOT ON THE HIGHWAY LIKE I AM USUALLY OR WITH MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR, ON A VERY SUNNY DAY WITH NO WET ROADS IN SOUTH FLORIDA AS I APPROACHED A RED LIGHT WITH CARS STOPPED AT THE LIGHT IN BOTH LANES, I PRESSED DOWN ON THE BRAKES AND TO MY SURPRISE THE BRAKE PEDAL HIT THE FLOOR. I WAS GOING ABOUT 30 MPH I WAS IN PANIC MODE AS I STARTED PUMPING THE BRAKES AND NOTHING. I STARTED SLOWING DOWN ONLY BECAUSE I WAS SO FAR BEHIND THE OTHER CARS WHEN I HAD TAKEN MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL. WELL I STOPPED UNFORTUNATELY ONLY BECAUSE THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME STOPPED ME. THERE WAS NOT MUCH DAMAGE TO MY CAR AND THE CAR WAS DRIVABLE. I HAD IT TOWED BECAUSE I WAS AFRAID TO DRIVE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHERE THEY COULD CHECK IT OUT AND FIX THE PROBLEM. THAT WAS 4:30 PM ON FRIDAY THE SERVICE AGENT SAID THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO CHECK IT TILL THE AM. ON SATURDAY AT 8:55 AM THE DEALERSHIPS GOT BACK TO ME AND GUESS WHAT THEY COULDN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, SO THE SERVICE AGENT TOLD ME HE HAD DRAINED THE BRAKES AND BLED THE LINES AND CHANGED THE BRAKE FLUID TO DOT 4 AND THE CAR WAS READY TO PICK UP. I TOLD HIM HE WAS GOING TO HAVE TO SPEAK TO MY HUSBAND BECAUSE I FELT HE WAS BEING VERY CONDESCENDING AND SHORT WITH ME. MY HUSBAND SPOKE WITH HIM AND HE AGREED HE WOULDN'T WANT HIS WIFE DRIVING THE CAR EITHER, SO HIS RECOMMENDATION WAS TO LEAVE THE CAR AND HAVE THE MANAGER DRIVE THE CAR FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE WEEKEND TO SEE IF HE COULD DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. WELL ON MONDAY AFTERNOON WE GOT A CALL AND WERE TOLD TO COME PICK THE CAR UP AS THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND COULDN'T REPLACE ANY PART WITHOUT DUPLICATING THE MALFUNCTION. WE NOW HAVE THE CAR BACK IN OUR POSSESSION. WE TRULY ARE DISSATISFIED WITH HOW COCONUT CREEK HYUNDAI HAS HANDLED OUR SITUATION AND WORSE YET HAVE A CAR WE FEEL IS UNSAFE TO BE DRIVING. *TR

ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS SINCE 2/16/13 I HAVE BEEN HAVING INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS OF BRAKE PEDAL GRADUALLY GOING DOWN TO THE FLOOR AT A STOP LIGHT OR WHILE WAITING AT A STOP LIGHT THE BRAKES WOULD GRADUALLY LOSE PRESSURE AND THE CAR WOULD START CREEPING FORWARD. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING WHETHER I AM DRIVING 30 MPH ON RESIDENTIAL STREETS OR 70 MPH ON HIGHWAY (WHICH I STOPPED DOING!). MY HUSBAND ALSO DRIVES THE CAR AND EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUES. AFTER PUMPING THE BRAKES, I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO STOP. DRIVING IN INCLEMENT WEATHER HAS BEEN ALMOST HAZARDOUS. CAR TAKEN BACK TO DEALER (MARCH 7, 2013), HAD PART REPLACED, PICKED UP CAR ON MARCH 8, 2013 AND HAD TO TAKE THE CAR BACK THE VERY NEXT MORNING, MARCH 9, 2013, AND THE PROBLEM WAS WORSE THAN WHEN IT WAS TAKEN IN THE FIRST TIME. WHEN THIS STARTED HAPPENING, I WAS VERY AFRAID OF HAVING AN ACCIDENT, ESPECIALLY WHEN I NEVER COULD TELL IF MY BRAKES WOULD HOLD WITH JUST A SIMPLE STOP LIGHT. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH OTHER GENESIS 2009 OWNERS AND FOUND OUT THAT THIS PROBLEMS AS BEEN OCCURRING SINCE JULY 2012 AND HYUNDAI HAS BEEN MADE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND CERTAIN DEALERS ARE NOT HANDLING THE REPAIRS IN A CUSTOMER FRIENDLY WAY, ESPECIALLY SINCE IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

ON A TOTAL OF FOUR OCCASIONS NOW I HAVE HAD TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE--BRAKE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR WHEN MOVING. THE VEHICLE WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT. MULTIPLE PARTS WERE REPLACED. THE PROBLEM OCCURRED A SECOND TIME THEREAFTER. I CAPTURED IT ON VIDEO, AS THE PROBLEM WAS NOT DUPLICATING AT THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER WAS FAULTY AND REPLACED IT. ALMOST EIGHT MONTHS TO THE DAY LATER (TODAY), THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED. IT IS INTERMITTENT AND RANDOM. THE BRAKE PEDAL LITERALLY PUSHES TO THE FLOOR, ALMOST AS IF NO FLUID IS IN THE LINES. THERE ARE NO RECALLS, TSBS, ETC. I HAVE POSTED THIS IN ONLINE FORUMS AND SOUGHT ANSWERS. SO FAR NO LUCK. IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE A CRASH AND POSSIBLY INJURY OCCUR. I AM VERY CLOSE TO PARTING WAYS WITH THE CAR. BRAKES ARE LIKE JET ENGINES; THEY REALLY NEED TO WORK ALL THE TIME. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. *TR

ON DECEMBER 28TH I WAS DRIVING IN MY '09 V6 GENESIS ON THE INTERSTATE FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES AND I TOOK A DOWNHILL EXIT WITH A STOP SIGN AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL. THANK THE UNIVERSE THAT THE ROAD WAS EMPTY BECAUSE AS I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN THEY WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE CAR BARELY SLOWED DOWN AT ALL. AS I GOT CLOSER AND CLOSER TO THE STOP SIGN I HAD TO PUMP THE BRAKES ABOUT 4 MORE TIMES WITH THEM GOING ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR EACH TIME. THE CAR FINALLY SLOWED DOWN TO ABOUT 10 MILES AN HOUR. AS NOBODY WAS AT THE SIGN AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL I WAS ABLE TO COAST SLOWLY THROUGH THE STOP SIGN AND TURN LEFT TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. I THEN TURNED THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON TO TRY THE BRAKES AGAIN. THEY WENT TO THE FLOOR ABOUT 4 MORE TIMES AND THEN THE PRESSURE FINALLY RETURNED. THIS IS SOME SCARY STUFF SINCE I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES AND I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT I WOULD HAVE CRASHED INTO SOMEONE HAD I BEEN DRIVING DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC AND THERE BEEN A LINE TO GET OFF THE INTERSTATE. I GOT THE CAR HOME SAFELY THAT AFTERNOON AND PARKED IT TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY FOR VACATION. I RETURNED ON THE NIGHT OF NEW YEARS DAY AND DROPPED THE CAR OFF ON THE MORNING ON JANUARY 2ND. THE DEALER SAID THEY WOULD LOOK INTO THE PROBLEM. I GOT A CALL FROM THEM YESTERDAY SAYING THEY CANNOT REPEAT THE PROBLEM (OF COURSE) BUT ALSO MENTIONED THAT THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER ON A GENESIS JUST LAST WEEK FOR THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. IRONICALLY ENOUGH I WAS SPEAKING WITH MY COWORKER ABOUT THIS (HE HAS A GENESIS) AND HE SAID HIS DAD HAS A GENESIS AND JUST HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM 2 WEEKS AGO, TO WHICH THE DEALER REPLACED SOME ABS PARTS ON HIS CAR. PLEASE LOOK AT THIS FORUM TO SEE OTHERS WHO ARE EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH THEIR BRAKES (HTTP://WWW.GENESISOWNERS.COM/HYUNDAI-GENESIS-FORUM/SHOWTHREAD.PHP?T=9926). *TR

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

On October 28, 2013, Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) to NHTSA describing a safety defect in the braking system of approximately 43,500 model year (MY) 2009 through 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedans (NHTSA Recall No. 13V-489).The Hyundai report indicates that the recalled vehicles may contain brake fluid that does not sufficiently inhibit corrosion on the zinc plating of control valve armatures in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) module. The DIR indicated that, over time, the build-up of corrosion products may affect operation of HECU control valves, resulting in a low/soft brake pedal with reduced brake effectiveness, which may increase the risk of a crash. In October 2011, the HECU supplier notified Hyundai that the brake fluid used in production plants was causing corrosion of valve armatures in the control module. The supplier changed the coating of the valve armatures in late March 2012 to correct the problem in production vehicles.Hyundai's recall includes Genesis vehicles produced prior to the implementation of the HECU change. In March 2013, Hyundai initiated a Service Campaign (TL6) to replace brake fluid in the subject vehicles with brake fluid with better corrosion resistance properties.According to Hyundai's DIR letter, after PE13-033 was opened, the company noted that some of the vehicles serviced in the TL6 campaign subsequently required HECU replacement. This was an indication that internal corrosion had progressed enough to affect valve operation and brake performance, prompting Hyundai to conduct a safety recall.Hyundai's repair procedures for 13V-489 require brake system flushing and replacement in all recalled vehicles with a new fluid containing the necessary corrosion inhibitor. In addition, for vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010, dealers will perform an inspection procedure to verify that the HECU is functioning properly and replace units that do not meet the test requirements.Hyundai indicated that, based on analysis of claim data, only vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010 have been in service long enough to require the additional inspection/replacement of the HECU. Analysis of failure data reported to NHTSA and provided by Hyundai in response to ODI's information request letter for PE13-033 identified 756 complaints and 1,683 warranty claims for 30,114 subject vehicles produced prior to June 1, 2010, resulting in a complaint rate of 25.1 incidents per thousand vehicles (IPTV) and a claim rate of 5.6 percent. The MY 2009 vehicles, with the longest exposure times, experienced the highest complaint (33.5 IPTV) and warranty (7.0 percent) rates. For the 45,639 subject vehicles produced after June 1, 2010, ODI identified 13 complaints and 34 warranty claims, resulting in a complaint rate of 0.3 IPTV and a warranty claim rate of 0.1 percent, indicating that the brake fluid corrosion concern had not progressed far enough to result in significant rates of brake system performance symptoms in those vehicles. This investigation is closed.ODI will continue to monitor complaints to evaluate the effectiveness of Hyundai's recall. The VOQs noted in the Failure Report are: 10569231, 10560898, 10560495, 10559360, 10558279, 10558264, 10556964, 10556631, 10556577, 10556322, 10554988, 10554802, 10554122, 10552958, 10551817, 10551157, 10551110, 10551092, 10550791, 10550773, 10550431, 10549750, 10549634, 10549629, 10549567, 10549402, 10549376, 10549270, 10549228, 10549186, 10549021, 10548903, 10548823, 10548791, 10548737, 10548722, 10548716, 10548705, 10546565, 10544803, 10543663, 10542962, 10541959, 10541741, 10538208, 10537934, 10536652, 105354
