The auto stop start function is malfunctioning. When I start to go after being stopped at a red light, the engine often does not restart back up. The car shuts down and I need to put it in park and restart the car. This just started happening about a month ago and it is happening more frequently now.

The problem, I believe, it with the auto start/stop feature of the car. At least 10 times (starting in mid 2021), while stopped at a traffic stop, the auto stop feature enables causing the engine to stop when the brake pedal is pressed down. Upon taking my foot off the brake pedal, the car stalls and does not start up right away. This always seems to happen at a busy intersection, and I have to put on my hazards until I can get the car to start up again which takes up to 2 minutes. This happens in both hot and cold weather. The danger here is that I can be hit by another car expecting me to move and also causes me to block traffic in dangerously busy areas. The problem cannot be reproduced at the dealership as per the dealership. There are never any symptoms prior to the car auto start/stop feature failing. This is a safety issue that can literally cause serious injury
With the auto engine idle stop enabled, stopped at a traffic light and engine shutoff. When releasing the brake engine did not start and dashboard display said to put car in park and press start button. Followed directions and car did not restart until completing the park/start button sequence three times.
Fuel-saving stop-start system fails to restart. Car goes into neutral and has to be turned off and back on to restart. This happens when stopped at a traffic light. Low battery light ignites, seems engine doesn’t have enough power to restart when gas is pressed.

The auto start-stop system is not working properly. We have had several incidences when the idle-stop feature is on and we stop in traffic or at a stop sign or light and the engine will not start back up automatically. I have to go back through the whole process of restarting my car and there are times when it wouldn't start back up on the first try. This has almost caused a couple of accidents with the cars behind us almost hitting us as we are not able to move initially causing more traffic and opportunities for accidents. I took it to a Honda dealership and there only suggestion was to get a new battery. They said that my battery when tested was borderline, but there battery testing machine did not say that it needed replaced. It said to charge and retest. I pressed them for the details and said it was at 12.5 volts and 400 on cold crank. So it wasn't exactly were you want it, but didn't show replace either on their testing machine. Also we had the Pilot in on 6/22/22 for a standard oil change and it was marked that the batter performance was good. The first week of July is when I was driving it and had the complete engine stop where I had to restart the car in a traffic jam on a bridge. It took multiple times to restart and almost caused an accident. My wife let me know at that point that she had been having this problem all the way back into May but didn't say anything to me as she just started turning the feature off when in the Pilot cause she didn't like the feature. So this was happening even when Honda was saying we had a good battery. They also said that they are aware of the issue and thought it wasn't safe, but the only solution was for me to get a brand new battery and then be subject to this same issue sometime down the road again. There have been multiple times when this has happened dating back to May 2022. I will list the first time below, but it happened to me again yesterday (8/24/2022).
On my drive home this afternoon the auto idle stop feature on my 2019 Pilot touring began to hesitate to restart after releasing my foot from the brake. On my drive home this afternoon the auto idle stop feature on my 2019 Pilot touring began to hesitate to restart after releasing my foot from the brake. The result was an orange warning light telling me that there is a problem with the collision mitigation system and a shudder before the engine would resume running. I had to turn off the auto-start feature to avoid stalling in rush hour traffic.
I was stopped at a stop light in traffic. The light turned green and I tried to hit the gas to go, but my vehicle turned off. I was stopped at a stop light in traffic. The light turned green and I tried to hit the gas to go, but my vehicle turned off. I tried to depress the brake and push the start button, lights flashed on my dash but did not start my car. I tried again and nothing happened. Then, all lights on dash turned off when I tried again to start the engine. I waited a few more seconds and tried to start the car and the dash lights came on but still my car would not start. I continued to wait a few seconds and tried to start my car and it finally turned on after 15-20 attempts. I called the dealer and they said it's probably the battery. The car just had a new battery put in so it's not the battery. The car just passed inspection at the dealer's last week. We have received no warning messages in the vehicle about this. However, the same thing happened to me a year ago where the vehicle did not start after being stopped at a light, but it only took 3-4 times to get it started again. Today, I was at a busy intersection when this happened with rush hour traffic with my children in the car. The speed limit was 45 mph on the road. Cars had to slam on breaks to avoid hitting us. Not a safe situation.

When coming to a stop, vehicle shuts off with brakes. Once brake is released the automatic restart will not engage. You are stuck in traffic and unable to start the car for at least a minute. Honda replaced the starter and the battery. With the extended warranty, the starter was covered after deductable but the batt cost almost 300.00. I have since been using the battery they said was no good to power my camper with no problem.

Car fails to start after a short drive and parked and always requires a jump start. Car also fails to restart after a stop/start at a complete stop! Has happened multiple times in busy intersections where you’re a sitting target for moving traffic. Always requires a jump start. Have checked battery many times and the battery checks out fine. Maybe electrical or charging system issue. Dealer can’t reproduce the problem as it happens sporadically. Can’t figure out problem and a hazard to drive with kids in car.
Auto engine shut off will turn off engine at stoplight but fail to restart engine when brake is released. Extremely unsafe. It has happened multiple times and each time we are afraid there will be an accident because we are sitting ducks and not accelerating when traffic expects us to.

Nov 28, 2018
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2019 Honda Ridgeline and Pilot vehicles. The mounting holes for the clip that secures the right center pillar trim panel may be larger than intended. In the event of a crash necessitating right side curtain air bag deployment, the clip may not hold the center pillar trim panel in position and it may potentially interfere with the curtain air bag deployment. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 214, "Side Impact Protection," and 226, "Ejection Mitigation."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: In the event of a crash, if the curtain air bag does not deploy as intended, it can increase the risk of injury.
Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will install a bracket on the right center pillar that will securely hold the center pillar trim clip, free of charge. The recall began January 22, 2019. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is D3D.

Opened Aug 20, 2025 · No close date supplied
Status: open (inferred from source dates) · Engine
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 414 reports of connecting rod bearing failures in the 3.5L V6 engine used in the following vehicles: Model Years (MY) 2018-2020 Acura TLX, MY2016-2020 Acura MDX, MY2016-2020 Honda Pilot, MY2018-2020 Honda Odyssey, and MY2017-2019 Honda Ridgeline. The subject engine failures were analyzed as part of a Recall Query (RQ24013). It was determined that these engine failures are outside the scope of Honda Recall 23V-751. Further, evidence gathered in conjunction with RQ24013 does not suggest this failure is caused by the same crankshaft manufacturing defect that is addressed by Honda in Recall 23V-751. Based on analysis of data from RQ24013, NHTSA has closed that investigation. The significant number of reports of engine failure in vehicles outside the scope of RQ24013 presents a potential safety risk that warrants further investigation. ODI is opening this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to further evaluate the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

RQ24013 · Engine Failure
Opened Nov 8, 2024 · Closed Aug 20, 2025
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Engine
On November 8, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query RQ24013 to assess the scope of Honda recall 23V-751 after receiving complaints that alleged connecting rod bearing failures in vehicles that were not within the scope of recall 23V-751. In November 2023, Honda recalled 248,999 various Model Year (MY)2016–2020 Honda and Acura vehicles equipped with the 3.5L V6 engine. Honda recalled these vehicles due to a crankshaft manufacturing defect that caused premature connecting rod bearing wear and engine seizure. While the out-of-scope failures involved in these complaints appear to have a very similar failure mechanism as the recalled engines, a thorough analysis of all available data from Honda has not indicated that the same manufacturing defect exists in the out-of-scope engines as the engines recalled by 23V-751. Based on this analysis ODI has determined that Honda has properly defined the scope of recall 23V-751. Consequently, ODI will close this RQ investigation. NHTSA will continue to investigate these complaints of engine failure as part of a new Preliminary Evaluation Investigation (PE25008). The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by new circumstances.
