I am writing to file a safety complaint about the 2022 Honda Odyssey Elite concerning critical infotainment and electrical system failures that present significant safety risks. These failures include power cycling, freezing, and complete system shutdowns, which impair essential vehicle functions like navigation, climate control, and communication. The random nature of the failures makes it difficult for technicians to replicate the problem, but it occurs intermittently while driving. Normally, the infotainment system just fails, requiring the car to be parked and power cycled, including opening and closing a door. On one occasion, the vehicle catastrophically failed during operation and would not restart. The car had to be towed to the dealer, but when it arrived, it was able to start without any jump-start. The dealer stated they could not replicate the issue so there was nothing that would be done beyond replacing the battery.

Immediately after picking up my vehicle following the replacement of the front bumper, I noticed the keyless entry system started to malfunction. When I touched the driver’s door handle, it didn’t respond as it should. Instead, I had to use the rear left passenger door handle to unlock the driver’s door. Additionally, the vehicle used to emit a warning buzz if any doors were not properly closed. However, after the repair, this warning sound no longer functions. When the doors are properly closed, the vehicle typically beeps twice in quick succession, but these beeps are sometimes too faint to hear due to background noise. Three days ago, I returned home after dark and unknowingly left my vehicle unlocked in the driveway because I didn’t hear the usual warning sound. That night, a burglar entered the vehicle, ransacked it in search of cash or valuables, and stole my $100 jumpstarter/tire inflator. Alarmingly, my garage door opener was on the sun visor, which could have led to a much worse situation. This malfunction has caused serious concerns, as the lack of clear audible warnings creates opportunities for oversights and security risks. Besides, I talked to the dealership more than three different occasions but I got no help. On one occassion, service technician said to leave my vehicle longer than a day but I was in no situation to accept that offer.

While placing an item in the rear of my Honda Odyssey mini-van the hatch began to close on me. The safety sensor did not activate and the hatch was closing with great pressure. I was able to slide out before being pinned or severely injured. After investigating why it happened, I discovered and was able to replicate the behavior. The key fob was in my right front pocket at the time I was almost pinned. My house key pressed and held the rear hatch button on the key fob causing it to close. Because the button was pinned down by my other key, the safety pressure sensor failed to activate. I was able to replicate and film this behavior. I was also able to replicate the behavior using my parent's neighbor's Honda Passport. 1. This occurred after turning off the vehicle, and on the first time closing the rear hatch. I have video of being able to replicate the issue available.

The rearview mirror became unglued to the windshield causing it to bobble around. It is unsafe to have a rearview mirror that doesn't work and the electronics inside it are unable to work correctly if not mounted properly. The dealership reported that it was a defect. It also is not something they could glue back into place and that the entire windshield needs to be replaced and a new mirror put on and recalibrated due to the electronics involved. This is on a 3 year old car that has 43k miles on it. Flow Honda of Charlottesville provided a video detailing their analysis by the technician. After driving vehicle to run 3 stop and go inside errands I drove home . Estimate of time for errands etc. was about 30 minutes. I pulled into my home's driveway and applied brake pedal to bring car to a complete stop so that I could tilt-in side view mirrors before pulling into my carport. As I did this I noticed that a white smoke had begun to enter the car through the AC diffusers. Smoke was also seen exiting from front right side of engine hood and through the exterior fresh air channel (the wiper blade area). The smoke had the odor associated with a fire and not the odor of electrical component malfunction. I turned engine off and exited quickly along with getting my middle row occupant, my 60 lb canine companion, out of the vehicle and into my house. I was not sure what was happening to the vehicle. So I went back out and by this time I could see a lot of white smoke coming from engine compartment. My next door neighbor's father called 911. Before the fire department arrived the vehicle was engulfed in flames. This all occurred within a 10 minute time frame and the heat of the fire damage 2 of my nearby parked vehicles. If I had driven into the carport as usually do, my house would have suffered fire damage. This Honda Odessey Elite was a 2022 model vehicle that was leased March 18, 2021 had 3296 miles on odometer. This is a fire safety issue. Had it happened while I went inside the post office for 5 minutes and my canine companion remained inside vehicle, I may not have been able to get her out in time to save her life.

2PE25018 · Inadvertent Deployment Of Side Air Bags
Opened Oct 28, 2025 · Closed Jun 25, 2026
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Air Bags; Air Bags:sensor:side Impact; Air Bags:side/window
On October 28, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened PE25018 to investigate complaints of inadvertent deployment of the side curtain and/or side thorax air bags. These complaints concern model year (MY) 2018-2022 Honda Odyssey vehicles manufactured by American Honda Motor Co. (Honda). Honda issued recall 26V227 on April 9, 2026, to address concerns of inadvertent side air bag deployment. In the recall filing, the company stated that “[a]s of April 2, 2026, Honda has had 130 warranty claims, 25 reports of an injury, and no reports of death related to this issue from January 24, 2017 – April 2, 2026.” Honda states that the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) contains incorrect deployment parameters for the side thorax and side curtain air bags, which may cause inadvertent deployment when the vehicle encounters strong road impacts, such as driving over potholes, speed bumps, or road debris. Honda stated that the SRS control logic for the second and third rows of seating contained an insufficient deployment threshold margin, allowing signal inputs to be misinterpreted as side impacts and causing inadvertent deployment of the side thorax and side curtain air bags. Recall 26V227 states that dealers will reprogram or replace the SRS ECU with improved air bag deployment parameters. Consumers received notice of this recall in late May 2026. In view of the recall being conducted by Honda, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation (PE). The Agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

On June 3, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE22005 after the agency received VOQs and several field reports concerning the Auto Idle Stop (AIS) feature on 2016-2019MY Honda Pilot vehicles. The complaints allege that the engine fails to restart on its own from a complete stop at a traffic light or road intersection with the AIS function engaged. The subject vehicles are equipped with a 3.5L engine with a 9-speed automatic transmission. On January 6, 2023, Honda released service bulletins 23-008 and 23-009. These service bulletins address the failure to restart issue in the 2016-2019MY Honda Pilot vehicles, as well as the 2015-2020 Acura TLX, 2016-2020 Acura MDX, 2019-2022 Honda Passport, and 2020-2023 Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The repair outlined in the service bulletins is a two-stage countermeasure to remedy the issue. The first stage is a Programmed Fuel Injection (“PGM-FI”) software update. The second stage is only deployed if the software update fails to remedy the issue. The second stage, depending on the model and model year, consists of replacement of the starter assembly, starter relays, and a valve adjustment. Additionally, Honda extended the warranty coverage to 10 years with unlimited mileage for vehicles requiring the second stage component replacement. ODI continues to receive complaints of the AIS failure to restart, with many complainants alleging the campaign countermeasures had been completed.NHTSA has reviewed Honda's Information Request Letter responses involving warranty claims, lawsuits, and consumer complaints in addition to ODI's own data. This Engineering Analysis is being opened to further consider the potential safety defect, including gathering additional data regarding Honda’s service campaign efficacy. ODI is additionally expanding the scope to encompass all vehicles addressed in Honda’s service bulletins 23-008 and 23-009 as well as newer model year vehicles, which are substantially similar to the vehicles covered by the service campaign.
