My car has almost 30k miles and about 8k miles ago the steering started 'sticking' on the highway. I drive 100 highway miles every day. A few months ago i noticed that if the steering wheel wasn't moved for a few seconds then the steering basically would stick and i would have to move the wheel to unstick it. It feels as if the wheels are in a rut and i am pulling it out. I have all of the lane departure turned off since i bought it and have tried turning it on, but nothing changes. Some days it drives normal but most days it has the sticking issue. Some days are worse than others and it is almost scary in that i need to overcorrect so much to unstick. The tires all have normal pressure. I have checked online and this seems to be a fairly common issue with these Civics.

When driving on the highway in a relatively straight line the steering becomes stuck. If a slight adjustment is needed using normal steering effort the steering wheel does not move and there is no play in the steering wheel. If you then push much harder, the wheel jerks or unsticks, and normal steering effort returns. When I increase the effort to unstick the steering wheel, there is a bit of a jerk in the steering wheel as though the electric steering motor is somehow stuck. I have only noticed this since I've driven more than 15,000 miles. Because I am part of a Facebook owners group of 11th Generation Civic Si drivers, this issue has been raised by quite a few other owners. A couple have posted Honda Service Bulletins on the problem because they are Honda Technicians.

I havent taken mine in yet because i need my vehicle for work. Not sure what i should do honestly. Low oil pressure light has randomly come on 4 times since ownin car also. Pull over let it sit and check oil, its fine and it doesnt come back on.

Above roughly 50mph, the steering wheel “sticks” to a centered/neutral position, and requires a light amount of force to initiate movement to the left or right. This results in degraded ability to maintain lane position, and the driver constantly fighting overcorrections. If the issue becomes worse over time, it could potentially lead to hazardous swerving or oscillation at highway speeds. The condition was first observed around 15,000 miles, and has persisted through 25,000 miles. On 14 Oct 2023, I took the vehicle into a Honda dealer for a diagnostic test drive. The dealer confirmed the resistance in steering, but stated this was due to normal operation of the Lane Keep Assist System, and turned it off. Having driven the vehicle for 18 months, I was already familiar with how LKAS felt, both on and off, and how to operate it. No attempt was made to inspect or troubleshoot the electrical/mechanical components of the steering system. The dealer did not seem familiar with any steering-related issues on this vehicle. On the drive home, with LKAS off and verified off, the problem persisted. There are no warning lamps, messages, or codes associated with this issue. I suspect the affected component is either the electric power steering system or a mechanical failure in the steering rack.

Hello, My concern lies with the Electronic Power Steering. My car physically is all over the play when it comes to making minor adjustments to the steering. The steering goes from being quite difficult to make minor adjustments to overreacting, causing me to ping pong side to side on the highway. This issue is magnified with the use of Lane Keep Assist, which cannot keep me centered on the road. This is a major issue. My lane keep assist and blind spot system keep failing and warning me to visit a dealer.

For about 4 months now my steering in my Honda has been not keeping my vehicle straight going down the road and pulls to the left alot. The dealer said it was nothing but I do remember many years ago I had problems with another vehicle and it turn out the Rack wasn't working propertly and the dealer seems to not know anything proper in steering of a vehicle. There have been many times it seems jerky and like the front end is lifted off the ground and not proforming like it should be. Also I having noticeable trouble keeping the car in the lane at speeds of 30-70 mph. A few time I almost hit another vehicle on my left side due to this problem.

I was commuting to work when my engine experienced catastrophic failure and was stuck on the interstate. Prior to this, the engine was making audible "ticking" sounds which are indicative of rod bearing failure. This happens from poorly lubricated parts and is a direct result of Honda of America requiring 0w-20 oil in its direct injected earth dreams motors. These earth dream engines have had a proven reputation for having oil dilution problems that cause catastrophic engine failure since 2016. Other subsidiaries of Honda around the world recommend 5w-30 oil, or thicker oil, in the same exact motors. It's because of this that Honda of America receives the most complaints for catastrophic engine failure for its 1.5L earth dreams motors. My warranty got denied because Honda determined that the cause of failure was due to a modified engine control unit. The problem is that Honda would not look into or rule out other causes of failure and instead put liability for repairs on me the consumer. They would not take apart the engine for examination and instead just performed a visual inspection and a scan of the engine's power control module. Furthmore, Honda of America would not disclose any technical information to me that proved any modifications made to the car caused the problem. In other words, they would not release information to me that they had on a vehicle I own. All that was discovered from their PCM scan was that it was modified. Since Honda of America and it's dealerships are the only authorities that govern their warranty claims, they will not let me dispute their decision. Because Honda of America refused to perform a proper root cause analysis with their warranty claims, it tampers with the integrity of the entire maintenance data documentation system. In other words, Honda technicians will never be able to recognize a common product issue if Honda of America continues to put liability and blame on the customer for any non disputable reason they claim.

EA23003 · Momentary Increased Steering Effort
Opened Nov 29, 2023 · Closed Jan 28, 2025
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Steering
On November 29, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Engineering Analysis (EA23003) to assess allegations of momentary increase in steering effort in model years (MY) 2022-2023 Honda Civic, 2023MY Honda CR-V, and 2023MY Acura Integra vehicles (subject vehicles). The complaints received by ODI alleged that the subject vehicles experienced a momentary increase in required steering effort (described as “sticky steering”) occurring mostly at highway speeds after driving for an extended amount of time; these complaints could not be duplicated during dealer service technicians’ quick test drives. The complaints had been received over the previous two years with most occurring with low vehicle mileage. The steering gear of these vehicles is aided by an electrical power assist unit. This power assist unit inputs force on the steering rack via a worm gear and worm wheel assembly. During PE23005, Honda stated this condition of momentary increase in steering effort occurs due to two factors within this power assist unit. First, during manufacturing, the steering worm wheel goes through annealing and component conditioning processes. These processes cause internal stress and strain within the steering worm wheel. This strain is slowly released over the first few months of the vehicle life. Over time, the released strain causes deformation of the teeth on the worm wheel, causing the worm gear to catch on the worm wheel. This catching results in the driver’s momentary increased steering effort. Second, the manufacturing process did not guarantee consistent grease application and, therefore, some subject vehicles received insufficient grease which contributed to the momentary increase in steering effort. During EA23003, ODI further analyzed the potential safety related consequences of the momentary increase in steering effort. NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Test Center (VRTC) duplicated the allegations of increased steering effort. In addition, VRTC discovered the steering worm wheel and worm gear tended to push grease out of the meshing area, resulting in large amounts of grease resting on top of the worm wheel. Information Request responses collected and reviewed by ODI showed Honda had also discovered this additional root cause during NHTSA’s EA. In addition, Honda discovered the preload of the worm wheel gear spring was set too high, increasing the gear slide load and resulting in higher friction and increased torque fluctuation when steering. The number of consumer complaints made to ODI continued to increase with the expansion of scope from the PE to the EA. Additionally, during EA23003, ODI received ten complaints alleging a crash, in addition to the 13 complaints ODI had received as of the time it opened EA23003. In total, 23 crashes have been reported to ODI due to this alleged defect. On October 3, 2024, Honda filed NHTSA Recall No. 24V-744 to address this defect. The recall will provide consumers with a new steering worm wheel gear spring with a decreased load. Additionally, dealerships will add additional grease and relocate any grease sitting on top of the worm wheel back into the meshing area. The scope of this recall includes all Honda vehicles that were manufactured with this specific improperly produced steering worm wheel and spring. In view of the recall action being taken by Honda, ODI is closing EA23003. NHTSA reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. PE23005 · Momentary Increased Steering Effort
Opened Mar 17, 2023 · Closed Nov 30, 2023
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Steering
On March 17, 2023, The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation (PE23-005) to access the alleged defect of momentary increase in steering effort in model years (MY) 2022 and 2023 Honda Civic vehicles. The complaints report that the momentary increase in steering effort (described as "sticky steering") occurs mostly at highway speeds after driving for a certain amount of time. The reports have been received over the past 2 years with most occurring with low vehicle mileage. The steering gear contains a unit that includes a worm gear and a worm wheel. Honda stated this condition of momentary increase in steering effort occurs due to two factors within this unit. During manufacturing, the worm wheel goes through annealing and component conditioning processes. These processes caused internal stress and strain within the worm wheel. This strain was slowly released over the first few months of the vehicle life. Over time, the released strain caused the deformation of the teeth on the worm wheel, causing the worm gear to catch on the worm wheel. This results in the consumer’s momentary increased in steering effort. Also, the manufacturing process did not guarantee consistent grease application and therefore, some vehicles within the scope received too little grease which contributes to the momentary increase in steering effort. Analysis of all relevant data indicates that the subject condition occurs early in the vehicle’s life primarily in winter months. Additionally, the subject vehicles need to be driven in a straight line for a period of time, possibly until the vehicle is warmed up, to recreate the condition. The condition does not illuminate a malfunction indicator light (MIL). Some complaints allege Honda dealerships are unable to recreate the condition or state this is a normal vehicle operation. However, Honda released Service Bulletin 23-037 in July of 2023 which accurately describes the condition. To address this issue, Honda directs dealerships to remove the electronic power steering (EPS) gearbox and replace with a new gearbox. Further, Honda stated that the worst case steering effort from all warranty returned parts tested was 2.4 pounds. ODI complaint traffic remains steady. ODI has received 13 crashes to date, 11 of which allege roadway departure due to not being able to overcome the momentary increased steering effort prior to their vehicle leaving the roadway. The remaining 2 incidents claim overcorrection of the steering wheel. PE23-005 has been upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA23-003) to further assess the scope, frequency and potential safety related consequences of the momentary increase of steering effort. Further the scope has been expanded to include assessment of the Acura Integra and Honda CR-V models. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
